Here thousands of her students have been awakened to the causes and meaning of education and have been guided on their various Miss Chesney, Mr, White, and Miss Graeser check prior to graduation. ways toward higher knowledge and careers. On this, our fortieth anniversary, we dedicate our yearbook to a person who began her high school education here as a student and came back after receiving her degree at Randolph- Macon to guide many lives toward suc- cerning practically any phase of our school as a source of information con- cerning ractically any phase of our education. We will remember her most in her capacity as a secretary, but we will always thank her for her personal interest in every member of the student body and the faculty. It is with humble thankfulness for your sincere devotion to Jefferson, her students and teachers, and what she stands for that we proudly dedicate the 1964 Acorn to you-Miss Edna Chesney Miss Edna Chesney tech me, the students uf Eeffersun Qiligh Schuul, helieiie in pucitg uf lining, nlxeclience tu authnritg, cnnrteuus manners, achievement thruugh effurt, lngaltg, service, and integritg nt character. me lielieiie in liixing up tn the liest that is fuithin us at all times, fuhether alnne nr fnith mang, and in keeping the faith fnith nurseltles, nur humes, nur schunl, citg, cnuntrg, and nur Gnd. 8 if ,1 W, 21-' N Es Q., bn .J ,dwga Q'..w1f:4:1.- L -f3,:f. fan? 5-,A 'UQ Y? Whenever we have a problem, whether is small or large, we can depend on our guidance counselors to give us good advice. They are always willing to help us solve our problems pertaining to school or to college in the future. Mr. White, our princi- pal, also does his share in guiding students. Here Mr. White has conference with Wayne Hanger. Mr. Holley devotes much time to helping students plan for the fu- ture. Mr. William H. Holley Art Guidance English, the largest department at Jeffer- son has this year added a Pilot Study to the curriculum for the sophomores. World Litera- ture is the basis for the reading, and speech and composition are emphasized to help the student to become more articulate in the use of his language. For the second year, the English depart- ment sponsored the Fine Arts Festival in February. This consisted of a week of as- semblies on the various phases of music, art, drama and English. English department faculty members were also advisors for our three school publica- tions. All of our English teachers emphasized composition, literature, and word usage. Senior themes climaxed our English careers in high school. E h Mrs. Ruth J. Staton Mr. S. This year has been a great year for our science department, and for the science stu- dents here at Jefferson. After many years we have finally received a long awaited and very much needed modern science laboratory with the latest furniture and equipment. Mrs. Margaret Brewer Home Economics F.H.A. The Science Department was most fortunate to have installed this year new lab facilities. All five of the science rooms and the office received new work tables and modern electrical and water hook ups. The new labs helped make physics, chemistry, and bio- logy even more interesting for the science students. Top: Judy Martin, Ann Kulp, Trena Bush, Becky Broyles, Vaun- da Cress, Tamara Booth, and Cheryl Byrd were members of the advanced biology class anticipating nursing careers. Here they were studying the many parts of the human body. American history is taken in the junior year and govern- ment in the senior year. We have a very capable staff of his- tory and government teachers. Under the leadership of our history teachers we gain a full knowledge of the government of Virginia and of the United States. We learn about explorers and other famous people who founded, explored, and settled our free nation. We learn more about how it is run in our government class. Room seven was scrubbed, painted and comfortably furnished to accommodate seniors with free periods and acceptable grades. A Nab and a Coke machine were installed to nourish seniors while they studied. The lounge was a bright and cheerful room and each senior worked to keep it that way. Our traditional Senior Picnic was held at Lakeside a week before final exams. Picnic lunches with plenty of fried chicken were provided for the famished seniors by the cafeteria. They also re- ceived tickets to the American theater, after an exciting day of riding the roller coaster, visiting the fun house and hav- ing a ball. l- Left to Right: Sonny Wilrnoth, Winston Baldwin Brlly Craig Corrrnne Sfrnderlrn Rusty McCown, Wanda Wallace, Franc Roberts Susie Quam Jeanette Crouch Jrrnmv Wrmmer, Larry Lee, Jimmy Nackley. We are now juniors, looking forward eagerly to our senior year. To become future seniors who will represent Jefferson, as in the past, we began to prepare this year. First was the election of officers which took place the first semester, and following that, the choosing of the junior steering committee and the first junior class meeting. One big event of our junior year was preparation for the j unior-senior prom. Next year we will become the leaders of our school and great responsi- bilities will be ours. 58 'WI Holly Abbot Howard Adams Kay Agree Linda Alexander Kathy Allie Dorothy Alls Don Altis Billy Altizer Carol Altizer Carolyn Altizer Linda Andrews Jimmy Ashwell Bonnie Austin Jane Bain Faye Band!! Sizer, Assistant Principal A Tiibute On Our The date, 1964, had a special significance for the yearbook staff from the time early in September during our planning phase when we realized that it marked the fortieth anniversary of our school- we made this the theme of our 40th edition of The Acorn. After learning that a new class ring style is to be adopted next year it seemed fitting to use the traditional style on our cover. Now,as we near the end of the school year, many phases of our theme have be- come evident, which we hope are reflected throughout its pages. It was the feeling of the staff that in an issue of this type, special tribute should be paid to a few of those many people who contribute vitally to the spirit which is Jeffer- son-and to them We have dedicated these two pages. Colonel Robert Wilson Mr. C. W. Woodson Mr. Frank O. Smith Jefferson Senior High School J efferson's immediate predecessor was the old Roanoke High School, now our Roanoke City School Administration Building. School rooms were renovated to form offices, con- ference rooms etc. for school administrators. Three of our administrative personnel closely associated with Jefferson are Dr. E. W. Rushton, our superintendentg Miss Doro- thy Gibboneyg Director of Personnelg and Dr. Frisbey Smith, Director of Secondary Education. . LL Fortieth Anniversary We also wish to give special recognition to a few of our faculty members who have given so much of themselves to the students of Jefferson over a period of years that they have become part of its rich heritage. Miss Sidney Penn, long a faculty member here at Jefferson, though now re- tired, was invited to join them as we consider her an in- tegral part of the principles for which Jefferson stands. Miss Dorothy Gibboney Di1'ector of Personnel Roanoke City School Administration Building Dr. E. W.
