Its purpose has been to give each student a voice in the government of the school, and to instill in him a spirit of honesty and cooper- ation. To attain these aims, a Prefect and a Student Council were formed. In the former are vested the legislative, executive and judicial powers of the organization. Its members consist of five Seniors, four Juniors, three Sophomores, and the Presi- dent of each class. This body is aided by four Faculty Advisors, who meet regularly with the Council. The advisory powers of the organization are contained in the Student Council, a group composed of one member from every roll call. This Council is a medium between the Prefect Council and the students themselves. The President, who must be one of the Senior prefects, is elected by the student body at large. The social side of the year has been quite as successful as the more serious side of the program. The banquets, including the Father-Daugllter, Mother-Daughter and Friendship banquets were well planned and carried out with enthusiasm. The year closed with the Sweetheart banquet, the principal social event, to which all the members looked forward. Probably the most enjoyable part of the year's program was the annual conference which was held this year at Lynchburg. There were enrolled this year a total of one hundred and seventy members, which makes it the largest organization of its kind at high school. The Expression Department seeks to awaken in the student a realiza- tion of his potentialities and by direction to help him to attain the highest expression of them. Tlierefore, the various courses in this department are commended to those who wish to give of their best to any occupation or profession. The liixpression Department has been responsible for many productions this year. Of the two, the junior World New: is the more active organization. This organization is composed of students who write up the school news for the part of the Roanoke World Now: which is allotted to high school items. Tlirougli this work the students gain concrete knowl- edge ofthe various types of journalistic work such as editorials, feature stories, news and sports articles, columns, and interviews. Besides the daily work, practical advice is given by Mr. S. D. Bowman, the Faculty Advisor. This year several members of the stall attended the Southern interscholastic Press Association Convention at Washington and Lcc. The Quill and Scroll is an international honor society for high school journalists. To gain member- ship in this society it is necessary for the student to have done outstanding work on some literary staff and to have a scholarship standing for the current year. Only juniors and Seniors are admitted to mem- bcrship. During the school year the club sponsors several contests in editorials, headline writing, feature stories, news and sports stories. Out of seven games with college freshmen teams we were victorious with live. Bluefield, our sole out-of-state contender, was defeated twice, once by a large margin and again by one not so large. Lynchburg, age-old rival of Jefferson, was twice defeated to the tune of 35'--IO and 54-Io. In the field of near neighbors Salem was twice defeated by a large margin, while Vinton was downed once to the same victory march. The Magicians twice defeated Danville, the first victory being eked out at a small margin of one point, 25-24, the second being somewhat better for thc Magicians at 33-18. Turning Eastward, the lylagicians seeking new teams to conquer defeated Suffolk at 48120. We traded with Suffolk, losing the second to them 24-3 2. Portsmouth, we twice defeated at 34-Q and 26-25.
