They have soared high in the athletic World. There were four Sophs on the 6'Big Red team and the star right halfback Was a leader in the Sophomore Class. On the track team nearly one-half were Sophomores. In the literary field the Sophomore Class has far surpassed any others in the past years. The Gold Star Nledal, from the Richmond Time:-Dirpatch, was won by two Sophomore debaters. The class was led most successfully by their President, Johnny Johnston. Organized only last year under the leadership of Nliss Cassye Young, the students at Lee Junior have become more closely united with their fellow classmen at Jefferson. The class sponsored a play iII Klarch, 'cSally Lunn,,' the proceeds of which were used to buy fifty-five new parallel books for the Sophomores. Student Participation in Government N I928,the students of Jefferson High School, with the help of the faculty founded an all embracing Organization. TO this organization they gave the name Stu- dent Participation in Government. U On enrollment in Jefferson High each student automatically becomes a member Of this vast Organization. Student Government comprises three divisions, first the Prefect Council, in which are vested the legis- lative, executive and judical powers of the Organization. lts members, fifteen in all, are elected from their respective classes. The presidents, Of the three classes, are ex Officio members. There are three faculty advisors to the council. The advisory powers Of the organization is vested in a Student Council, composed of members elected from each roll call room. This council acts as a medium between the Prefect, Council and student body. The third division Of Student Government is the student body, the mass Of people whose cooperation has helped make Student Participation in Government the essential factor it is to-day. This year Student Government has realized its highest aims-it has forged ahead, Overcoming all Obstacles and paving the way for bigger and better things next year. To become a member the boy must be voted on first by :I membership committee and then by the club. The yearls club has had a most successful program. Talks have been given on Bible study, vocational guidance, sex life, friendship, going to college and other topics of interest to the high school boy. In the social line we have entertained our mothers, fathers, faculty, alumni, newsboys and Sweethearts. During Christ- mas, the Hifi' cut and delivered loads of wood to needy families, and gave the boys of the Norwich Branch, of the Y. Nl. C. A., a party. The Jefferson Hi-Y was the hrst club in the state to hold a HRound Table. To end the year with a bang the club spends a week--end at Camp Johnston. These girls are chosen not only for their scholarship but for their leadership ability. The membership of the Club is limited to twenty members. For membership it is necessary for each name to pass the approval of the faculty, and the vote of QQ of the club. This year the Boosters sponsored the cheer leading group and planned pep assemblies for all athletic games. The Club sponsored parades and edited several Souvenir Programs for the most outstanding football games. The Boosters sold season tickets for the home football games. They also entered into the advertising and subscription drive for the Acorn. The Club sponsored an act in 4'The Grab Bag,', for the benefit of the Athletic Association. The most successful of their accomplishments was the designing and selling of our high school stickers. It has two fundamental purposes, to strengthen the ties of friendship among the boy leaders through intimate association, and to enthusiastically support every student activity in Jefferson High. linthusiastically, the club backed the ACORN subscription and advertising cam- paigns, and for the second successive year obtained more subscriptions to the ACORN than any other organization in the contest. A silver cup was also awarded the Club for presenting the best one act play iII the Grab Bagf, 'cThe Sky Rocket presented in collaboration with the Boosters featured both local and student talent. As, in the past, the J H Festival was given in honor of the athletic letter men Trophies were awarded the most popular boy, most popular girl, best football player, best basket ball player, best track man and best Big Brother. VV. L. S., is a club for all literary-minded girls of Jefferson, the only membership requirements being a written or an oral presentation. The point system is used for all work done and a letter given for twelve points. At the beginning of the year IQ3I'32 the enrollment ofthe NI. TV. L. S. was fifty members. At the close of the fall term, '31, the membership was double. At the end ofthe spring term of IQ32 the membership stood at one hundred and twenty-tive. Another success of the society was the presentation of HA Bunch of Roses, on April 1. Through the elforts of this society, students of Jelferson have the opportunity of competing in contests, debates and such, with students from other high schools, thus widening their thoughts and experiences. ' The .leffersonian Literary Society HE Jeifersonian Literary Society, the hrst boys club organized in Jefferson High, entered its activities With the largest membership on record. The club's progress this year has been an epoch in the club's history. The club created an executive board, selected a pin and now has included it in the dues. The club became selective with a membership limited to seventy-live. To become a member the prospect must give an original public speech which is judged by the faculty advisor. This year the club helped sponsor a Inusical comedy and also sent a literary teaIn to Charlottesville after meeting Salem, Yinton, Bluefield, eliminating tryouts. This is easy to see when one realizes, that while, heretofore, there were about eighty interested, there are now over three hundred students in the department. Besides a general study of the stage, and its necessary training for any dramatic work, each class has its programs, in which the student portrays his special talent, or talents, in effort to entertain and teach his fellow students. Wve tried to impress upon the girls of high school, the importance and Value of Physical Education and sports. During the year each manager took charge of her sport and credit is due them for their able leadership. The G. A. A., sponsored a Faculty basket ball game, in which both men and Women members of the faculty played. At the close of the year the class Winning the greatest number of points is presented a silver loving cup. Each class works very hard to secure this honor. The members are bound together in a strong bond of fellowship through mutual regard for music. hlembership is open to any student who complies with the entrance requirements, this student having been chosen from the choral clubs by a committee of the Glee Club. Klembership is limited to thirty girls and thirty boys. The Glee Club in cooperation with the music department presented Miss Cherry Blossom an unique musical comedy which proved to be an unusual success. The result of the Lynchburg-Jefferson game was indeed a memory worthy to be carried close to the hearts of every spectator. Jefferson suffered defeat at the hands Of Bluefield, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Vinton, but was victorious Over Danville, Salem, Winston-Salem, Clifton Forge and Lynchburg. . Captain Humphries, halfback, proved his worth in many games. The work Of Hunter, Nininger, Price, Sovvder and Hancock in the line was outstanding. The running of Johnston was excellent.
