V- 'JIWXQL' History of the Class of '30 NOTI-IRR YEAR has elapsed since the old, gray-bearded chronologist has scanned the yellow pages of the History of the Classes of H. S. The time has come for him to review that auspicious book once again. He is seen laboriously pulling the book down from its shelf and blowing the dust from its time-worn cover. Crackle! Crackle! fDon't mistake these crackles for burning brush, 'tis only the sound of the leaves, not when the wind blows them together in autumn after they have dried, but the pages of the said book.l The lirst things to catch the eye of our hero are these few, but outstanding words inscribed on the top of one page, Sophomore Class, YS. l-le has attained his goal-this is the page for which he has been looking. On further reading, he notes the actions of the Class during its most trying year- VVe, the Sophomores of '28, hoping to be the Seniors of '30, who have now entered the portals of -I. lil. S., do hereby declare ourselves an essential part of its system. Our name goes down in history as being the first class to have the present form of Student Participation in Government in our Sophomore year, thus having it three years. ln the spring of this year we held the election ofthe members for the next year's Prefect Council. During this, our greenest and hardest year, we were led by Dick Thomas, our president. More cracklesl The leaves are slowly turned by the chronologist's palsied hand. Another headline catches his eye. This one is more interesting, for now the rats have become upperclassmen- JUNIOR CLASS, '29 We have now entered the best year of our high school life. lfVe are no longer ignorant 'ratsf Neither are we required to be as dignified as the Seniors. VVe have struck the happy medium and are now 'Jolly juniors' At one of our first class meetings Billy Saunders was elected president of the Class. Later we chose our class rings. SENIOR CLASS, ,SO At last, after so many years of waiting, we have acquired the distinctive name of 'Seniorsf XVe move around the halls with our heads in the air not deigning to know those lowly and insignilicant personages called 'rats.' During our Senior year many things have happened. The lirst, of course, was the election of our Class president, C. B. Thornton. Very little happened during the autumn but in the spring-there was enough to lill a library of an immense size. There were the elections to the Class Mirror, the Senior pictures, the Senior Class play, tryouts-and, linally, Commencement upon us, and all that goes with it. Thus ends our high school career amidst many lamentations and sighs. The chronologist has finished reading the last sentence. Quietly he closes the book. As he does a flurry of dust issues from it. He carefully places it back upon the shelf. Sitting upon his worn leather chair once more, he resumes his meditations. A gallant Boy Scout, Billy K., coming up in the nick of time, handled the situation coolly. l-lie made a wild run to the drug store for bandages and things. Skillfully, he strapped the poor little ankle. Its owner was game and battled back a few tears that would keep coming. It's a rather vacant feeling to miss your step, isn't it? Road-building by the fair sex is something new in the way of accomplishments. It is especially to be admired when indulged in on a hot summer's day, The garment worn, in this particular instance, was a misleading mustard-colored bathing suit. VVhich reminds us of a delightful bright blue sweater Ben has been wearing. One day we glanced into a Sophomore assembly and saw him standing on the stage before the student body. The Sophs looked drab, the light was drab. That bit of blue was mighty encouraging. It was quite symbolic of his speech-true blue-honesty and ideals. It would be nice if all people wore colors to suit their personalities-perhaps. jack is, from all appearances, just about the sheikiest of sheiks. He is even giving C. B. strong competition. Not long ago he was standing out in the hall surrounded by fifty or more females. The poor boy, with a frantic air and disheveled hair, was actually fighting them off. But they, determined bodies as they were, clung on. Some of the rest of us wouldn't mind trying our hand at collecting Senior dues. You know, we've often heard some one say something, in a more or less jovial way, about breaking the camera. But all joking aside, the thing really did happen. Mr. Jewel, at Kidd's, was stepping around in his characteristic way, pushing away a bit of scenery, pulling up a shade or two, and cracking jokes about unfortunate love affairs to make one of our fair Seniors smile. The girl smiled at Mr. jewel, Mr. Jewel smiled at her. He pressed the bulb, and his face fell. Some of the camera's insides had gone wrong. Mr. Jewel turned to poor M., Uldlell, my dear, you certainly couldnlt have done that. You know, this thing of being a model for artists must be frightfully tedious. The tirst step toward this end was the selection of officers who were enthusiastic in the administration of the class business, and who felt deeply the responsibility placed upon them. Those elected were President, Richard Penceg Vice l-'resident, Margaret Sieberg Secretary, Gregg Marksg Treasurer, Dick Voage. These officers have served well and made the Class a strong and efficient organization. Through the efforts of the treasurer, the financial condition of our Class is, by far, better than that of any junior Class for several years. XVe were wel! represented on the Prefect Council this year, the junior members being Dick Poage, junior Prefect, Margaret Campbell, Richard .Pence and VVarren Montague. These students have worked faithfully and they are largely responsible for the success of Student Participation in Government this year. An assembly for the whole school was given by the juniors and they also cooperated with the Parent-Teachers Association in putting on a stunt. VVorking with the president, the Ring Committee selected the Senior rings, which arrived early- in the spring term of this year. juniors made positions on every athletic team put on the field by jefferson High this year. On the football squad there were ten juniors. Eight of our class inembers were on the basket ball squad, and ten made the track squad. The large number taking part in literary activities is equally important. Six assistant editors of the junior XVorld-News, and six members of THE ACORN staff are from the junior Class. There are also six reporters on the junior NVorld-News staff. VVe placed three members on the Literary Team which competed in the annual contest of Virginia Literary and Athletic Association at Charlottesville. Fully half of the membership of the jeffersonian and the Martha XVashington Literary Societies are juniors who have distinguished themselves by their line work. The Class of 1931 looks back upon the record it has made, then forward to the next year as an opportunity to fulhll the prophecy of success made by the faculty and higher classes at its entrance to jefferson High. Each junior looks forward to graduation as a member of one of the largest and best classes which has ever passed through the portals of jefferson into the work of the world. By ELLA WHEELER VVrLcox. EN YEARS AGO the present Sophomore Class of slelferson High School started up the ladder of knowledge. The first few rungs were easy to reach and to hold, but the more we advanced the harder the climb became. Some could reach a rung, but were not strong enough to hold it and, therefore, had to drop back while the others advanced over them. Some had to give up climbing the ladder of knowledge and start doing their part in the working world. After grammar school came our junior High years and then, jefferson High, the place we have striven to reach, and have won. Our older brothers and sisters accepted us and with their able assistance we entered into our regular school routine with vim and vigor. This Class has done its share in helping put over the various organizations. Vllith a splendid record behind them the Sophomore Class promises the best junior Class Jefferson High has ever seen or ever will see. llluch credit is due our capable ofhcers. At the beginning of the fall term, the Sopho- mores were introduced to our system of Student Participation in Govern- ment by pamphlets. which were given them, and which gave a full explanation of how our system of government functions. The first business of the year was the election of the Sophomore members of the Prefect Council, the election of the Student Council and the installation of the officers of Student Government. The installation of the officers was a ceremonial which set forth the ideals of Student Government. As the Knights of King Arthur's Round Table were charged to uphold all that was good and beautiful, so were the officers of Student Government charged to uphold its ideals. The officers of Student Government at once settled down to hard work. From time to time throughout the year there have been various assemblies sponsored by Student Government, at which time we have had the privilege of listening to some very interesting and inspiring speakers. ' At the opening of the spring term representatives from jefferson High visited the -lunior Schools and spoke on Student Participation in Government in order to give newcomers to high school an idea of how Student Govern- ment functions. Our chief objective throughout the year has been to create an atmosphere of fellowship and to imbue a feeling of responsibility in every student in jefferson High School. To carry out this aim the Student Council members have kept before their roll calls the ideals of Student Government and have urged them to cooperate. Mottoes. which might prove helpful in keeping before the student the ideals of Student Government, have been posted in every classroom throughout the building. In every way possible we have tried to bring about a better understanding of Student Government within the student body. From the beginning of the fall term of 1929 there have been cases tried before the Prefect Council which have been carefully considered and justly dealt with. The objective of these trials has been not to incriminate or convict anyone for wrong' doing, but to build up character and honor in the student body at large. The members of the Prefect Council for the past- year are: ' SENIORS SOPHOMORES BEN SMITH, Smiior Prefer! The aim of the Expression Department is not to develop actors and actresses, but rather to develop well-rounded, well-balanced individuals. Although it is true that dramatics form a large part of the course, the real aim toward which we strive is to teach students how to converse intelligentlyg to express themselves well, and to be able to put over the intended message with clearness, interest and forcefulness. On December 14th a recital of the finished work accomplished in the Department was presented to the public. The success of the venture cannot be considered from a hnancial standpoint since no admission was charged. It was a decided success, however, in that it showed the public a cross-section of the outstanding work accomplished in the classroom. . Recently The Tormentors, a dramatic club, was formed in the classes. A president was elected from each class. These presidents form the board of the Club. Only those in the Department who have performed outstanding work are eligible for membership. The aim of the Club is the promotion of better dramatics in the high school. The Department has grown from 32 members to a membership of over 180. This unusual growth has been due mainly to three things: First, interest shown on the part of the students and school at largeg second, the untiring efforts of Miss Clara Black, the instructorg third. the need for such instruction. The motto of the Department is: Present only that which is best in drama of to-day and of former ages. Q , 0 -'K 103 .f'iifff:21'I?iYF.aa. - eff? R OSALII-1 JOHNSON S AN OUTSTANDING organization of Jefferson High, the Martha VVashington Literary Society works with a definite purpose in mind. First, it teaches stage presence, poise and ability to speak in public. Second, it cultivates an interest in local, state and national affairs, and reflects the students' reactions to their operations. Lastly, the Society presents a phase in high school life which offers wholesome entertainment and splendid chances for development. During this year numerous and enjoyable programs have been presented every Tuesday. each carrying out a chosen theme. The jeffersonian Literary Society gave a delightful party, because we won in the spirited membership campaign last fall. The most important thing of all has been our wonderful victory at Charlottesville. The entire literary team triumphed over Salem, thus gaining a trip to the Virginia Literary and Athletic League Meet, held at the University of Virginia. Here, the affirmative debating team was awarded the State Championship, and the girl reader was declared Champion of Class A. In all, the year has been a most successful one under the excellent guidance of Mrs. Kinzer, and the leadership of our capable officers. E mvmm TIIUIIMAN VIRGINIA Cook, Librarian HEN THE Music Department was First organized in 1923, it was open to all those students who had off periods. No program was carried out and order was not required. All this has been changed. Music now holds its rightful place in High School life. The instruction and pleasure that music-loving students gain from it is invaluable. To heighten the spirit of advancement and competition, a Boys' Glee Club and a Girls' Glee Club have been 'organized in recent years. These Clubs arc composed of about thirty members each, which are chosen from the Choral Clubs as :I whole. They are chosen from the standpoint of poise, expression of the face and expression given to the words, breath control and other requirements. The first big thing undertaken by the Music Department was Historic Follies. The great success with which this was met prompted the undertaking of Sailor Maids, which was presented last year, and The Lucky Jade, this year. The Glee Clubs and Orchestra have an important part on the Commencement program. We have been asked several times to broadcast and assist in civic meetings. The Music Department gets bigger and better each year, and every term more students take advantage of the vast opportunities it offers. A large percentage of the men were new and this, together with the postponement of the opening of school, gave the coaches a lot of work to do. After having lost our lirst two or three games to prep schools, the boys began to get placed, and started working together. But it seemed that luck was against us and, though the team gave all the light for which Jefferson Hils teams are famous, one bad break in the biggest home game of the year ruined the' hopes for a championship. After this game the team played good football to tie our rivals from Salem and Lynchburg, thus ending the season with four games lost, two won and two tied. Throughout the season Captain john Noftsinger led the team where the light was thickest and always held his position well. Raymond Rice proved his worth in every game of the season and was an outstanding player. Paul Routt, Glen Matthews and Charlie Turner also showed some fast work in the backtield. Stick Humphries and Burtless played a whale of a game at Lynchburg as well as in the other games. Barnett, Pedigo, Wimmer and Seifert supplied the beef for a splendid line. Coaches Hurt and Moorman are to be congratulated on the team which was turned out of the material at hand, and the Class of '30 hopes that the bad breaks which came this season will be enough to last for many years to come. Best of luck to next year's team. RESULTS OF SEASON jefferson Hi ..... . . . 0 Harrave. . . . . Jefferson Hi .. . 6 Greenbrier.. . . . Jefferson Hi . . . 46 Danville... . . . . Coach Hurt developed a machine that outclassed every high school in the State of Virginia by a large margin. This clan of mighty Magicians swept every obstacle to march to the State Championship, and set aside the Roaring Typhoons of Newport News by a small but sufficient margin on the Newport News Hoor-25 to 24. The Magicians met many strong opponents and had the handicap of most games close together. They lost only five games out of a total of twenty-one, and only one defeat at the hands of a conference team, this being Lynchburg High School by a score of 17 to 9, The remainder of defeats was due to the superiority of college freshmen and military academies. On this splendid team we have players who outclassed many in the State and who were regarded as showing outstand- ing sportsmanship. Houston Young, the tall, dark-complexioned center, who played his third year on the Jefferson team, played an outstanding brand of ball. He is mostly famous for keeping 'a cool head in the rally of opponents. He has had the pleasure of being Captain of jefferson Hi team for two consecutive years, which won the Class A Championship this year. His first year on the team saw them runners up, only to be beaten by Woodrow Wilson High, Portsmouth, Virginia. Raymond Rice is another big gun on the quint. He was one of the outstanding scorers of the high schools in the State. It usually took two men to cover him on the floor and he has been credited with several wins. . Among others, is Charlie Turner, who contributed a great amount in the winning of the State Title. He formed the great Turner-Rice passing combination which puzzled many. New to our coach this year, we have Sammy Neel. He broke up many of the opponents' hopes of victory by his skilled snowbirds. Sammy could be seen everywhere on the Hoor at once. Last, but not least. we have Robert Gillespie, one of the best guards ever to wear a maroon and white uniform. He, too, tamed the opponents hopes as they came down the floor. On this squad we have a few reliable substitutes that should receive a large hand, as they were always anxious and ready to help Coach Hurt win the game for Ole Jefferson. They are R. Turner, R. Thornhill and A. Smith. Of the light men who received letters only two, Neel and Thornhill, will return, but good men will take their place from the strong junior Varsity. lke Thornhill is captain-elect for next year. After we had won the State Title there was something said about going to the National Interscholastic Tournament in Chicago. The faithful Alumni of Roanoke donated enough money to make the trip possible. ln this Tournament we met some of the best teams in the United States. In the hrst round we were matched with the Wheatland, Wyoming, team and lost 27 to 14. .After this defeat, we were allowed to enter the Consolation Round. We went into the semi-finals in this only to be beaten by the strong Bayler School, of Tennessee, and then won from Chelsea, Massachusetts, for Third Place honors, or ranking about seventh in the Tournament. The score of the Tournament was as follows: First Round jefferson lli .... ..... 1 4 Wheatland, Wyoming .... 27 Cmlsolalion Round Jefferson lli .... ....... 3 8 Morgan Park M. Although this was Coach lflurt's first year of track coaching and an almost entirely new squad came out, they did exceptionally well, Among the new men who showed up well were Wfilkerson, Carper, Gillespie and Barnett. In the first meet with V. P. I. our boys were completely outclasseid, and were swamped under a large score. VVilkerson, who won both dashes, kept Jefferson from being held without a first place. In the meet with V. M. I. i'Ole I-li came out on top. Again Wfilkerson won both dashes, but Rice took a tie for first and third place in high point honors. At the state meet at the University of Virginia the squad came second with 322 points. Carl Smith was the star. il'-le lead the team in the number of points scored, with eight, and broke the state record for the high hurdles with 17.4 seconds. lVilkerson came second in the dashes. Kerns and Rice were second and third in the high jump in which the state record was broken. ali! 114- ltr- ,,,7.-JYMWN 41 lf: ' 'lit R-. It was picked hy a tournament which the school sponsored. The winners of the doubles, the Turner twins, went to the University of Virginia to take part in the State Literary and Athletic League contest. They met Vinton to he eligible to participate at Charlottesville, and won in straight sets. At the University the scores were: First round, Jefferson beat Danville-6-0-6-lg second round, Jefferson heat Maury-6-1-6-3-6-3. This gave them the Class A Champion- s np.
