Artie Witt, Feature Twirler at the homecoming pep rally, does his thing. One enthusiastic coach! What kind of a team is this? binds together as one. Invaders from some other school sing at a pep rally. Where did these people come from? Spirit is an element of every school in every state and country. It can be a big boost to a team and students if they know that every¬ one is backing them 100%. Spirit can be depressed by the few students who “cut down the teams. They only put forth enough effort to amuse themselves with others' faults. A school team or ac¬ tivity of any kind needs everyone behind them. Sherree Turpin This is where the players get their heads geared for the game. Our pep rallies are really GR-R-R-EAT. Gary Brown Together at the first pep rally, are the seniors. We'll have none of that! Mrs. Owen sell tickets at the gate. First Day Of School The gates of the dam are opened, he stream of students to flow, he creeks of knowledge . . . Will form rivers and grow. ,W Clinton Watson Back to the routine of school. Didn’t you miss it?! Proud Sophomores hold their banner high! Gametime refreshments compliments of the Boosters Club. Seniors As we make our plans for next year, we can also look back to some years of both achieve¬ ment and disappointment. Each person will think of it with different feelings. Plans for a picnic, classnight and other activities prom¬ ised a few more memories. When we look back at our time at ]FHS, we can do so with a sense of accomplishment and a wish of suc¬ cess for the future. JANET FAYE GREGORY CLIFFORD EDWARD HARRIS There are so many things to consider when one thinks about going to college. To begin with, college is a very expensive adventure. If you haven't been saving all of your life or if your parents haven't, you have to worry about financial aid. It is also important to send in your application early and to plan on visiting each college that you think that you would like to attend. Then too, the idea of going into an entirely different environment with a new set of routines is enough to make anyone wonder whether it is really the best thing for them. It seems that all my life I have been saying, When I go to college ... Wow. That time is here. I don't feel ready for it. I want the change and opportu nity, but frankly, I'm scared. It seems most people make it through, some you would never have thought could. I'll make it. Our society fails to give us a gradual transition into adulthood. We are taught all our lives that we are no one until we are eighteen. It recently was moved down from twenty-one. At the appointed time the government and society recognizes us and we are someone in the eyes of the nation. Until then, we don't even exist. Nancy Carwile to Howard Hicks warms up for the game. Memory Of NATHAN FULCHER 33 This year the Junior class had to settle for a ring ceremony on Dec. 6 in the afternoon instead of a ring dance. The reason for the ceremony instead of a dance was that the gym floor had been painted over the summer and the administration didn't want it scratched up until after basket¬ ball season. The ring ceremony was held in the auditorium. The Senior class officers presented the Junior class officers with their rings. The Junior class offi¬ cers presented their fellow stu¬ dents with their rings. Since there wasn't a ring dance when the rings were delivered we have been told after much de¬ bate that a ring dance will be held sometime in March. Jolly, Jolly Juniors . To the Junior Year! The Junior class started off their active year with the se¬ lection of their class colors, flower, and motto. The col¬ ors are yellow and orange, the class flower is a yellow carnation, and the motto: WE MAY NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN . The first money raising project was a car wash in which there was an abundancy of water fights and to top the afternoon off, Mrs. Stennette was con¬ fronted by two eligible gentlemen. Broken Image was on hand for the after-game dance sponsored by the Juniors on October 4th, which proved to be a big success. This year's SCROOGE contest proved to be a rivalry between women teachers and coaches. The women teachers set a precedent with the election of the first female SCROOGE at JFHS; Mrs. Bos¬ well. The sweetheart contest was another means of ob¬ taining money for the Junior class. The annual Miss JFHS pageant held in April included approximately thirty con¬ testants. The Junior-Senior prom brought a conclusion to the end of an exciting year. We would like to thank Mrs. Stennette, our sponsor, for her assistance in making this a memorable year. 37 Dawna Johnson Leslie King Angela Knight David Knight Nancy Langford Chester Laughlin Teresa Laughlin Larry Lipscumb Cathy Markham Cathy Martin Ricky Martin Wade May Ginny McCabe Mike McDaniel Bev Mcfaden Teresa Mcfall ■ (W ■ - A 11 9I19RSI ft . lv m mBl ij Should We Smile or not? Rhoda Bell, George Hicks, Delma Jack- son, Dawna Johnson, Leslie King, Angela Knight, Ginny McCabe, Eddie Roakes, Donald Smith and Gigi Strader were trained as discussion leaders to aid small groups of 5th and 6th graders in Forest Elementary School. For 16 weeks the students visited the classrooms for 50 minutes once a week. The objectives of SODA are to allow the children a chance to examine their basic values and attitudes and to aid the children in developing positive self images and to improve human relationships and communication. This program, sponsored by the Drug Abuse Services Hub in Lynchburg, is the first of its kind in the area. 40 With The Help Of Mrs. Stennette . . . We proved this in 1975 by winning the spirit stick at Pep-rallies and being al¬ ways ready to cheer for our teams. Our class is well represented in sports and other activities by people who exemplify great char¬ acteristics which is beneficial to our class. Along with school and athletic responsibilities the sophomores were given the opportunity to show their talents behind the wheel of a car. Drivers training for most sophomores was a great time to get away from it all. With three years behind the class of 77 we look forward to our fi¬ nal two years with high hope and great ambition. Student Cooperative Association One goal of this year's SCA was to raise $500 to donate to the Bedford Chapter of the Red Cross. The drive lasted from March 13 through March 31. This is one example of how the Jefferson Forest SCA is of benefit to the community as well as the school. Another project was the beautification of the school grounds. A clean up campaign was spon¬ sored in which many members of the SCA partici¬ pated. Their main objective was the parking lot from which many bottles and trash were removed. Also, a committee headed by Angela Knight showed its decorative ability by painting the out¬ side trash cans. The SCA also sponsored a Christmas Dance which was held December 21, 1974 in the school's cafeteria. One final effort was made by the SCA to get exam exemptions. The officers, along with students from the other county schools, appeared before the School Board on March 13. The final decision is un¬ known at the time of this printing. Mrs. Childress can tell you how exasperating yearbook sales can be. I don't think anyone really knows how much work goes into putting out a yearbook. It may seem to some people that we don't do very much, since you don't get them when you'd like to. Well, those people are wrong. It takes hours of planning to start with, then many more hours of taking pictures, deciding which ones to use, cropping them, draw¬ ing layouts, typing and writing captions and copy, collecting information . . . the list is endless! There's hardly enough time to do half of it. As before, we started with a green staff and it was al¬ most impossible to teach everyone (all nine of them) how to do a whole yearbook in a few days. There was much frustration when one found that there was either the prob¬ lem of not having what you needed or did not know how to do it. Well, at least we tried and this is what we've come up with. I hope you like it. Angela Knight Mike McDaniel checks the progress chart to see how far behind we are. Julie Witt and Cindy McNeely quickly become frustrated with the index. I am in the eighth grade and this is my first year here at Jeffer¬ son Forest. I belong to the Latin Club. I did not play any sports this year, but I plan to play J.V. Football next year. I have played football for the past five years and I swim on a swim team in the summer and I swim for the YMCA in the winter. This has really been an exciting year here at JFHS and it has gone by fast. My hobbies are sports and I like to build models. Miss Selvetta— Lynn Hunter Hi! My name is Lynn Hunter. I am an 8th grader. This is my first year here at Jefferson Forest. I enjoy all sports and activities as I enjoyed being a J.V. Football Cheerleader and playing on the girls J.V. Softball team. This year has been quite an experi¬ ence and a year for me to remember. I would like to thank all my friends and the people who made it possible for me to become Miss Selvetta. Spring— it was a time of preparing to end another year. The juniors were busy giving the class of 75 their prom while the class of 75 was busy producing a play entitled I'll Love You Forever Tomorrow . This was presented to the student body along with several skits and a male beauty pageant. This production was a big boost to moral at a time when spring fever was about to be the death of everyone. Unfortunately, few attended the prom, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and few donated blood at the Beta Club sponsored Bloodmobile. The Booster Club sponsored the spring sports banquet and seniors went to the Peaks for their picnic. Mr. Sowell and Mrs. Owen add a laugh to Senior Day. Mike McDaniel working at an assembly. Track runners converse with Juniors while they work on the prom. It was a time of varied activities. Clockwise: Bobby Gill, Garvis Reynolds, Dennis Burks, Chip Ray and David Loyd research for a movie done by Mrs. Podhurst's English 12 class. Pernie Hatcher and Kayla Hanna supposedly practicing for the senior play. Mr. Webber, Beta Club sponsor, donating blood at the Bloodmobile. Miss Buckner presents Donna Ellis with a trophy at the sports banquet. Seniors work hard in last weeks. Dancing to the music of the Andrew Lewis Band at the Prom. just one of the senior skits. Anita Wilkerson and Tom McCabe, starring couple in the play. Sally Scudder escorting Steve Timmons in the male beauty pageant. The gym was the scene of two of the spring's most exciting events, the donkey Basketball game and both male and female student faculty games. In case you missed them, here is a short rundown. Baby Face Schleicher awaits his turn after competing in the costume contest. Students and faculty battle wits on donkey and on foot. Donkey Game— For the first time, female seniors were allowed to ride the stubborn beasts. They did a fine job ... in many instances, outdoing their male teammates. Our male teachers, the more aggressive of the two groups, came out ahead in the end. They had a set up of coaches that couldn't have been beaten. How¬ ever, senior John Mitchell pulled out ahead in the costume contest leaving his counterparts behind in applause. Student Faculty Games — These were not quite as popular as the former, but the spectators did enjoy the stunts that the players tried to pull off. Senior girls came out ahead, but the guys couldn't do as well. Faculty players move their weapons onto the floor. 4 Mr. Thompson wonders how much longer this nonsense can go on What a way to spend an evening! Well, I think we've nipped them in the bud Bryant Hare performs his last duty as time and score keeper before leaving for South America as an exchange student. 5 Varsity Baseball Captures Third in District Row 1: Mgr., C. Several new sports teams have been added to our school's list of extra-curricular activities. We now have a girls track team, a j.v. girls softball team and an intramural program. Unfortunately, these teams did not get adequate coverage in this supplement. The yearbook staff would like to commend all of the members of these teams for a job well done. We are also looking forward to covering the great varsity teams that will result from practice at an earlier time. Kneeling: Jeff Bowman, Chris Fellhoelter, Ricky Nichols.
