Without the instruction, the inspira- tion, and the knowledge of our leaders, without the knowledge, the opportunities for self-expression, the fellowship of social groups, and the aid for physical development that our schools afford us, we believe that the ideals of our Christian democracy would fade away. We, of the Staff, sincerely hope that you will enjoy this book and that these pages may inspire you to greater heights of knowledge and instill in you the need for preserving freedom and democracy. The team defeated air-minded Poly on their home grounds. Charlie Harris, in his first starting assignment, showed what he could do, handling and passing the ball like a veteran. After beating Wilson of Dallas, the team, accom- panied by the student body, traveled to Lufkin, playing what was perhaps the best game of the year. Everyone on the team was blocking and tackling hard in this one with Ralph Pettit doing more than his share. In the city conference, the Panthers also had a stronger win column than a losing column, winning four of their games and losing to Lamar and San Jacinto. Lamar went on to win the conference, while the team outranked San Jacinto in conference standing. After getting by Milby with ease, they beat a supposedly strong Austin team that just didn't have it this game. The Reagan game wassa close one, as Jerald Redmon and Kenneth Mann was terrific in backing up the line. Charles McClain and jack Meeker stood out in the forward wall. After playing a very weak first in the Sam Houston game, the Panthers showed the power they had in coming back with determination the second half and going on to defeat the Tiger team. The phoioqraphs of the candidates, which you submiiied, were all so attractive that l found it difficult to make a decision. It was also difficult to make my selection without seeinq and twking to each contestant. The winners were selected on the basis of personality, character, and intelligence, as well as for natural beauty. My choice was influenced, ofcourse by my great inleresi in and admiration for the Natural Girl. D li the contestants are ever in New York, ii would be a pleasure io meet them. With best wishes to the coniesiantsjto the staff of The Beauvoirland to the students of jefferson Davis Senior High Schdol, I am Sincerely yours, john Roberl Powers jRP:ea According to tradition, the fifty-one photographs submitted in the contest were judged by a committee composed of representatives from the student body, faculty, and school organizations. Then the entire collection of pictures was sent to Mr. john Robert Powers, who selected Davis' ten most beautiful girls. ' For the first time in BEAUVOIR history, photographs of boys were submitted in a contest of their own. The same committee of students and teachers judged these photo- graphs.
