Prompt and efficient work of the Eitlson Studio has made our association with them a pleasure. The staff artists have taken advantage of the opportunity to exploit the beauty of our building by reproducing the many ornamental frescocs, openings, borders and other features, all of which have been freely used throughout the book, making this issue a representative jefferson Davis book, With the thought uppermost to present a hook of pleasant memories of High School days, we submit the result of our efforts to our subscribers. Roy Needham is the instructor of Physical Education and comes into per- sonal contact with every boy in the school, he remembers each student by his first name and thus endears himself to the boys and adds to his own ever growing popularity. I Mr. Needham is a man who stands for clean and fair sportsmanship at all times. He believes that playing fair will, more than anything else, help a student in life workg it is this principle that he teaches to every boy in school. He is also a great help to advise themiin their private affairs. Roy Needham means much to the Jefferson Davis High School Faculty, to the student body and to the community. It gives a great thrill to Houston football fans, but more than a thrill to the students and faculty of jefferson Davis. He is a football player built on a foundation of characterg and his greatness is only beginning. He has given his very best for the grand old game, and he will continue to give his very best. jack holds the distinction of being the most generally feared and, conse- quently, the most generally marked player in this section 5 but he has made good in spit of this apparent handicap. In fact, he seems to thrive on this sort of thing. He has madejefferson Davis over from a fair city high school team to one of the best in the district. Jack is a credit to Jefferson Davis High, an inspiration to his team mates, a nemesis to opposing players-the boy who placed the passing game in a high plane in Houston. His defensive work is consistent g his passing sensationalg his kicking uncanny, his ball carrying a continual threatg and his spirit undying. Sportsmanship is a marked quality of Jack's greatness. We know of nothing that would please us and hundreds of fans more than to see Jack in a Rice Owl uniformrnext year. Boys' Sport Section of the Annual is dedicated to Jack Frye. They were aided by some of the best blocking ever seen on Rice field. Gurner, Pope and Jeff Roberts led the interference and cut their men down in line fashion. Davis received a great honor when the first touchdown-was scored by Sam Lefkowitz. Sam proved that he was one of the best ends in the city. Jack Frye again starred and showed the boys from up North what clever broken field run- ning was like. Bobo McKnight of Central thrilled the crowd with a number of sensational snatches of passes. In the line Ted Springer proved that he de- served his place on the All-City team by doing some fine defensive work. W It was a line football game for Houston fans, but the boys from Chicago deserve a lot of credit for playing as well as they did against such a football machine as they faced. For four years he has played the major role in the Davis football teams. Throughout this time he has always been the same Jack Frye. In spite of the praises of sports writers all over the state he has never lost his modesty. By his graduation Davis will be deprived of one of the most versatile athletes she has ever known. COACH NEEDHAM On of the best coaches in the city. In four years he has made Davis ath- letically known and feared throughout this district. . Assistant Coach, CTURBYJ TURBERVILLE The spirit of that second team owes its rise to the work of 'fTurby.', A new man to the squad he soon worked his way into the boys' hearts and did much to improve the team. SAM CKAMADOUCHEJ LEFKOWITZ A fighter from start to finish. The going was never to rough for Sam but through it all he was the best sportsman on any field. JIMMY FERRELL Although he was light, jimmy was one of the hardest hitting ball carriers on the team. ORIN CSTINKJ HITT Stink was a pass snatcher de luxe. The combination of Frye to Hitt was feared whenever Davis played. ELLIOTT QNOSEJ MURFF Elliott hustled from the first gun to the last and always could be depended on to get his man. OTIS CMAGGIEJ MAGEE ln spite of his size Otis could give and take with the best of them. He could be downed but could never be put out. JAKE GUARINO jake was one of the scrappiest guards of the city. Sam set the example and Jake followed in his footsteps to make an outstanding player for Davis. CARL REINDL ' By hard work Carl made the team this year and earned his letter. It was his first year out but he displayed enough class to play end for Hivis. LEA QNUBSJ UNDERWOOD Fast and sure, Lea could always get the tackle when going down under punts. He was a regular for the Panthers although it was his first year out. NOBLE ARMSTRONG During the summer months Noble worked on a pipe line gang to get in shape for football. When he returned to school he was in fine shape and filled a regular berth at guard. We are depending on Ralph to help make a powerful team next year. . . VICTOR QKISSYJ DWYER Victor worked hard to make a regular tackle on the squad and at the end of the season was chosen by many sports writers for one of 'the all city berths. ALAN WEED This was Alan's first year out but he showed worlds of promise. With this year's experience behind him, he should make a strong bid for a regular's place next year. CHARLES QPELICANJ BOWDEN Being handicapped by size meant nothing to Pelican and he proved to be a very promising backtield performer. - ALFRED QLAZY PETED DOWLING In spite of his being rather lazy, Pete knows how to snag passes. Next year should find him on the first team as a star. ALBERTCLAUNCH - A hustler always. Albert is a very promising center and will be making a bid for a regular position next year. WILLIAM CBILLJ CASEY Bill was one of the best tackles on the team and could be depended upon to stop anything that he could reach. 'P IRVIN qFLUTERy MASSEY Massey worked hard all season but was handicapped by injuries and could not do his best. Massey had worlds of drive and grit. EDWARD CREDJ MONTGOMERY A scrapper from start to Finish. Red was in there all the time doing his best to put Davis on top. L A J. D. STERNS ' J. D. was the best player from Denver Addition. He worked hard and was one of the best blockers on the squad. GEORGE CTUBJ SMITH VVith a little experience Tub will make a good man. Keep hustling Tub. LAMAR CSQUIRRELJ CLARK There was not a better liked boy on the squad. He came out four years and gave everything he had to make the team but he was handicapped by size and failed to earn a regular position. Lamar deserves a lot of credit for his spirit. He starred in the new year's day game against Englewood High of Chicago. ' EDWARD QMRSQ MURPHY Ed looked good at second string center and will be a capable man to have in the line next year. PRESTGN QQUACK3 ROBERTS In spite of his love for chasing Ducks, Preston made a very good halfback. Next year we hope to see him paddle through our opponents' lines for touch- downs. CECIL QLINDALE KIDJ DELANEY The Lindale Kid could be depended on to stop anything coming his way. He helped uphold the athletic record of' Lindale that was set by Chas. D. Mehr. EARNEST SABAYRAC A very useful mascot to the Purple and Gray. He was always encouraging the team to become better. - VVILLIAM QOXJ HARRIS I One of the best mascots of the city. He is loved by everyone on the squad for his ability as mascot and good nature. We are very sorry to lose such good sport as one may find in Ox Harris. LESLIE MARTIN Leslie was a hustler from gun to gun and ever did his best to help create a winning team at Davis. JAKE QSYNAGOGUEQ GUAR1No The mightiest man in the Guarino family proved to be a blessing to Davis when he turned out to be a guard of the best rating. Jake will be back next year to earn his second letter. y RALPH BUTIGIG ' A good built boy and a good sport at all times. Ralph should make a good tackle for the grand old game. WILLIAM qB1LLy TURNER r ' Bill was willing to try and made a 'good showing at tackle. Next year he should prove to be a very valuable man. ROB'T QMULED ROLAK Mule was a first class end. JIMMY GRAYSON jimmy hails from Brooksmith and can certainly block and tackle well when he gets the inspiration. ROGER MCCULLOUGH In spite of his size, Roger attended every practice and worked hard all season. 'THOMAS iq BLACK EAGLE3 Tommy was there every day giving his best help building a strong first team. To1nmy's hard work placed him high among the outstanding athletes of Norhill. GARRISON QFARMERQ BROWN Garrison was the best punter and one of the best ball carriers on the second team. JESSE JONES Wee Jess was the ace of the second string ball toters. He won the award for the player who showed the most sportsmanship among those who did not letter. Port Arthur SUM MARY Regarded as one of the weak teams of the city, the Panthers surprised all opposition by turning in remarkable performances in all games played. With Jack Frye at the helm, the Panthers threatened every team with a passing and running attack that was super destructive. The absence of Thenes Hajecate proved costly to the team as the line was weak at critical moments and allowed opposing players to slip through and spoil chances for gains. . Nevertheless lots of credit should be given to Coach Needham and Mr. Tuberville for putting out the team of 29. Both worked hard to make con- tenders out of promising but rather light material. JESSE CJESSJ JONES Although he was one of the smallest men on the team, Jesse was usually among the high scorers. He had a deadly eye for the basket and was always good for several points in any game. Captain-Elect, SAM QKAMADUCHEJ LEFTSOWITZ There wasn't a better boy or man on the floor at any time when Sam was there. He was shy and modest but if anyone tried to slight Davis or Davis students there was sure to be trouble. CARL QCOTTLED RENIDL Carl was a very shy and unassuming young man, but this did not prevent him from being a great center.
