Pat Pearson, This year we, the students of J.C.C., dedicate the 1988 Ieffersonian to you, the faculty of the Business Division. The dedication of a yearbook stands for many things. You were selected because of what this dedication stands fori It is an honor given to you, the members of the faculty in the Business Division, who, through your words and actions, make as your personal goal the goal of this learning institution, namely, uthat more may be enlightened. This dedication is a symbol of love, warm; like an embrace, that speaks of our admiration for you when words cannot. The vote was 51-48. The measure already had gone down to congressional defeat when the House rejected it Wednesday night making Thursdafs Senate vote academic. But like much that goes on in the Capitol, everything was not what it appeared. The Republicans many of whom pressed for the vote obviously were counting on winning - thereby showing that the administration could count on at least some sup- port in Congress for Contra aid The risk in that strategy was that defeat would have given Reagan not just one black eye but two. That was what the Senate Democrats were shooting for. The White House, anticipating a close vote, brought Vice President George Bush back from the presi- dential campaign trail to assume his role as president of the Senate. As such, Bush would have been able to cast the deciding vote if there were a tie. uI guess the Republicans just want to show they,re supporting the President, said Sen. Howard Metzenbaum, D. -Ohio. tiltys a total- ly vain act. ' Reaganis new thrust nce again the White House girded for battle. Intent on winning congressional approval of more military aid for the contra rebels fighting Nicaragua's Sandinista gov- ernment, administration officials last week began an aggressive anti-Sandi- nista speaking campaign President Ronald Reagan himself wheeled out the heavy rhetoric, telling a group of civic leaders in Washington that the choice was between a future of free- dom and democracy for Nicaragua and its neighbors and ttrevolution and un- rest and a steady advance of Soviet military might toward our southern border. Administration officials, ac- knowledging growing opposition to contra aid in Congress, tentatively set their request at about $64 million, far less than originally planned. But be- fore the Democratic- controlled House of Representatives votes on the issue Feb. 3- the current $17.9 million in US. aid expires Feb. 29- Reagan's drive for hearts and minds is certain to intensify. uThe President is not go- ing to budge on this, said Larry Birns of the Washington- based Council on Hemispheric Affairs. Sept. 8, 1987, the first nurses' strike in Northern New York history began at the House of the Good Samaritan when about 150 members of the New York State Nurses Association began picketing the hospital. Although there had not been a previous nurse strike in the north country, there had been close calls, including one at Alice Hyde Hospi- tal, Malone, in June 1983 when 50 nurses at that hospital ratified a contract only three days before a scheduled work stoppage, and the other in July 1983, when about 90 registered nurses at A. Barton Hep- burn Hospital, Ogdensburg, unani- mously approved a contract less than five minutes before the strike deadline. The September strike at the House of the Good Samaritan fol- lowed a 23-hour negotiation session Broncos Busted Knigjh! News Service SAN DIEGO - Wait ,til next year. Or maybe forever. Based on their most recent Super Bowl performance, or the one before that or even the one before that, the Den- ver Broncos may never win a world championship. On Sunday aftemoon, be- fore a sellout crowd of 73,302 at San Diegols Jack Murphy Stadium and a national tele- vision audience, the Broncos were thoroughly dominated, humiliated and devastated in a record-setting performance by the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXIIr The score was 42-10. The game was not that close, on the previous Sunday and Labor Day holiday and a 14640-2 vote re- jection of the hospital contract of- fer. Among the at least 20 critical issues then unresolved were work- ing conditions and wage increases for new recruits at the expense of experienced nurses. The chief working condition complaint focused on the practice of tfloating, in which a nurse would be thorrowedll from one section of the hospital if another section be- came short-handed. Negotiations had begun June 15, and the previous three-year contract expired July 31. Strike votes were taken Aug. 20 and 21, and tallies showed 90 percent of the nurses voting wanted the union to strike. On Aug. 31, the hospital launched a contingency plan which included cutting several services, except for serious emergency situa- tions. N o admissions were accepted to the pediatric department after Sept. 3, maternity admissions were not accepted after Sept. 4 and all general admissions except coro- nary care ceased Sept. 1. Nurses returned to work at 7 am. Sept. 13 after approving a two-year contract by a vote of 146 to 14. Most of the nurses' key 2patient care demands were met in the con- tract hammered out during a 24- hour bargaining session held with the help of federal mediator Robert G. Bowling. Key changes in the contract ad- dressed floating by establishing a tfloat pool of no more than 10 per- cent of nurses on any shiR. To address rotation, which pre- viously could see a nurse forced to work alternating day and night shifts, the new pact established one third of the positions as day only jobs and allowed nurses with seven or more years, experience to bid on those jobs on a seniority basis. Captive Condor Mating Lifts Hope for F uture Associated Press SAN DIEGO - 'IVvo California condors have consummated their elaborate, dancing courtship ritual, a first-ever captive mating which raises hopes that North Americals largest land bird can be saved from extinction. uThis is big news? Bill Toone, XV Wintef Olympics Calgary, Canada February 13-28 curator of birds at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, said Thursday after the condors consummated an elaborate courtship which began last year. AC-4, a 7-year-old male condor captured in 1985, mated with UN-l, a female bird whose exact age is unknown, Toone said. autographs 8' autographs 8' autographs autographs 6' autographs 8' autographs 95 autographs 8' autographs 8' autographs 21,;
