Grant HA A-eee ;,,.. : ICollege Play Unit Acts Admirably i Jefferson Community Icol-f lege's new dramatic club, The Dionysion Players, came up with a winner in its first production on Thursday night when the group gave lan admirably sane perforn'i- ance of ltThe Madwoman of Chaillot.'L The students recreated Jean Giraudoux' two-act sa-I tire under the sensitive di- rection of Charles M. La- lPierre. t The play will be present- ed again tonight and Satur-' day evening at 8 at Trinity ERisQQPaI,,church. With the guidance Eftlfe' c 0 un t e s s, the Madwoman, whose illogic is splendidly logical, the downtrodden poor of Paris ridicule and defeat the hypocrites and materialists who are at- tempting to undermine the city for the oil which they believe lies beneath it. While the opening few minutes of the first act seemed a bit stiff, the actors soon warmed to their parts and portrayed their charac- ters with an easy natural- ness, providing an intriguing foil for the entrance of the barohuely regal Madwoman, the countesse, excellently portrayed by Sue Stevens. The background business during this scene, rather than detracting from the primary action, served as a counter - point, emphasizing the major lines. The focal point of act two, .the trial scene, revealed the, talents of John Sullivan, as the ragpicker who momen- tarily takes the defense of the materialists in order to condemn them. Outstanding also were the performances of Judy Grant as the sweet and shy Irma, Perry Godfrey as the businesslike Baron, and Linda Compo as the aci- dic Constance: Though ama- teurs, all the players re- vealed wit and understand- ing of their roles. The simplicity of the stage ing, with few props and my scenery, served to point up Giraudouxl witty lines. The costumes, chosen to repre- sent the timelessness of the play's theme, and the make- up, to emphasize the charac- ters as representations of that theme, seemed entirely appropriate.
