Your co- operative effort has enabled us to achieve much in our que st for academic excellence, and we deeply appreciate the support which you have given to this important unde rtaking. The occasion of our first graduation is a milestone in the short history of the College. Contrary to what some may believe, your graduation will not sever your relationship with the College. I be- lieve that the College will remain important in your lives, and that each of you will remain imhortant to the College. As members of the first graduating class you Will have greater influence on the reputation of the College than any single class to follow you. Your success will become our success, and your failure will become our failure. A few years ago several prominent people in our area saw the need for a school to further the education of many of our young people. Each year many students with great potential were unable to go on to school because of a varied number of reasons. It was then decided that we needed a com- munity college in this area. After a considerable amount of discussion, Water- town was chosen as the site of Jefferson Community College In September 1963, the doors of Jefferson Community College opened for the first semester in temporary quarters at Lansing Street School. This old elementary school took on a new look C0211 bins in the basement were transformed into a biology laboratory. Other sections of the basement were convertedlinto a chemistry lab, a physics lab and a student lounge. The small desks in the class rooms were replaced by larger editionsr
