The Shlp s I op for the Class of 46 On September 7 1942 the good sh1p efferson Center launched 1ts four year crulse throuvh the Seas of Educat1on w1th Zl members abo ard Our crewmen conslsted of Barbara Sm1th presldent who later became sea s1ck so Paul Chappel took over jack Lefever v1ce pres 1dent Madellne Gross treasurer Cora Dean Schrader secretary a nd the sponsor lvlrs Honess Dur1n5v all four years the Capta1n of the good sh1p jefferson Center was lvlr Kent We met rough seas at the Port of In1t1at1on Other a t1v1t1es on board conslsted of a party 0nF ebruary 3 1n the shlp s gynfm and a party on Ixlarch 19 1n Dolores Shee t s cabln U non enterlng the Sophomore Seas the cru1s1ng seemed smoother Wh1le anchored at Vacatlon Port three passengers Vlrgll Smlth john H1nen and l oren Graves fa1led to return Two new passengers nora Gaylord from the S S Crulser Waslungton Center and Gene Ho pe Kaufmann from the good sh1p South Slde of Fort Wayne came seas1ck so she was taken to the hospltal New crewmen took over the sh1p jack Lefever was presldent Cora Dean Schrader v1ce pres1d ent Gene Hope Kaufmann secretary and Dolores eets treasurer The fxrst of October we came along s1de a new Shlp w1th the Class of 47 on board We boarded the1r sh1p and 1 11lI1at6d them 1n the ways of the sea whlch 1S the custom w1th all new shxps Later 1n October w anchored our Shlp and all started out for a hayrlde 1n the country We had a welner roast 1n Dev1ls Hollow Our next expenence was an sembly prograrn It turned out so well that the P T A cab ed want1ng us to perform for them Before leavlnv th1s seas we celebrated by h avlng a theater party and meet1ng later at Red Mullendore s soda fou ntaln cab1n for refreshments September aga1n and we have entered the jumor Sea Dur1ng thes ummer we galned another passenger Charles Albertson he andR obert Dugan went ashore Th1s year we galned control of the shlp s tore Our ch1ef storekeepers were Elnora Gaylord Barbara Smlth Cora Dean Schrader Rosemary Crowell Mary Ann Hartman Dolores Sheets Lo1s Gordon and the lvlanaver was jack Lefever Y I 1 . ,J 1 - 6 A , ' v Y - N l Q , ' - - 9 ' , 9 . 9 - 1 ' ' 3 . . 444: Our 1ncome from the store was over S300 Our Crewmen for th1s yr ar were presldent Ned Byall v1ce pres1dent joe Clark secretary Ros emary Crowell treasurer LOIS Gordon and the new sponscr Mrs 13 rankle joe Clark left us to board the S S Crulser Hurt nf ton Towns h1p at Chr1strnas txme Act1v1t1es dur1ng the year cons1srel of three p artles We en1oyed another havrlde on shore a party ln Mary Ann 11 artman s cabln and theater party The maln event was thc ce Jl1O'l we gave for the Senlors on Apr1l 13 We transformed the snlo S v,rr 1 nto a flower garden and the chow was super After the d1nner we went asnore at Fort Wayne and treated the Semors to a stage show Capta1n Kent dec1ded the Shlp needed a housecleanlng He was dreadfully sho rt of help so we p1tCh8d 1n the last week and made thlngs sh1ne just over the hor1zon was another sea but before golng on we boardeo the shlp near us Wlth the Class of 45 aboard, decorated lt and helped them w1th the1r arrangements for the1r graduat1on exerclses owledge and experlence are grow1ng longer Crewmen are Ned Byall pres1dent who later became seaslck so Gerald Meyer took over LOIS Gordon vlce presldent Elnora Gaylord secretary jack Lefever T reasurer and Mrs Brankle our sponsor Durlng the summer Laurel Taylor left us to go on board the good shlp Central of Fort Wayne and Ir1s Standlford came on board from the S S Hoagland On October 26 we met 1n Gene Hope Kaufmann s cabln for a Halloween Dartv Decem ber 31 we met ln Ir1s Standlford s clubroom and watched the New Year come 1n and March 14 our sh1p sponsored a katlng party Many spe ctacular events fmlled the last few months of our Journey wlth exc1tem ent and ant1c1pat1on Aprxl 12 we were honored w1th a recept1on glven us on board the Class of 47 s Shlp We had a wonderful t1me and appr ec1ated lt very much To be d1ffc-rent we gave our Sen1or play Here Come the Br des on November 13 14 1 xstead of ln the Spr1ng It was a comedy 1n three acts and loads of fun to present Class n1ght was A pr1l 19 Aprll ze and Z7 we anchored and all boarded a tra1n for Ch1c ago as our f1nal act1v1ty together We stayed at the Hotel Harmson w h11e we were there ACt1V1l s were almo t too numerous to ment1onb ut a few were-golng to the Preukfast Club r1d1ng the Subway see1ng t he Merchand1se Mart and v1s1t1ng the Hull and Adams Houses Our c ru1se together 1S ended now From here we are each a Captaln of our own sh1p May we all have smooth sa111ng ' , 9 ' - ' , : . . , - : , ' , 1 , ' -- - . h , .
