-- JEFFERSONIAN --- enter but ust think how I was mistakenl And you too, were widely misled if you happen- ed to share my pessimistic opinion. TYon't you admit as much? l3y the end of our first five days in Jefferson Barracks everything had been set in motion. We had drilled and drilled, it is true, but between our periods of work, we found ample time for play. And after only these few days, there had been given for us an excellent dance, where those who were starving for pretty girls could, and were in fact, satisfied. tl know l was, anyway.l There had been for those individuals athletically inclined, all sorts and varieties of games, for when we arrived each company was fully supplied with hand balls, basket balls, base balls, weights and discs for throwing, baseball bats, more than was needed, in fact, for a rollicking good time in anything. Then the swimming pool, it must be mentioned, it is large and clean-the best things that can be said of any pool, but it has many other features, a long, wide water slide. floats, many diving boards, all that is necessary for perfection in the aquatic line. Now, there were even other sports, for the movie fans there were held nocturnal grandstand performances. Anyone could go there, and for an unusually low admission fee, see his favorite of the screen, whether it be Charlie Chaplin, Doug or hlary, Theda Bara, or who. We had most of them here at one time or other. But if we did not care for the show, or felt rather lazy, it often times meant a trip to the canteen. Wie could go over there and play checkers or chess to our heart,s content. Then we might saunter over to a chair and join the book worms, by reading some story or magazine article. After that, if it was not yet bed-time, there was always a quantity of Y. NI. C. A. and Red Cross stationery, from which we could help ourselves, then we would usually go to our tents and wait ex- pectantly for a letter from home. It was all of these facts that helped in making the C. BI. T. C.a phenomenal success. Everything that was attempted by those in authority was done correctly and fully, and not merely meddled with as is more than frequently the case. The dances, for example, were no small afair. They were real events. Every Saturday night promptly at eight- fifteen everyone knew a dance was beginning, a dance with an excellent orchestra of 6th Infantry fame, a dance with many fair eyed maidens from St. Louis, a dance that was attended and appreciated. This is only typical. The right things were started at the first and they were con- tinued until the last, because of this I feel sure that each boy who was a member of C. hl. T. C. this year fully realized what has been done for him. And to realize is to be gratefull XY11.1.1.xM B. BORDERS, Reporter. Jl .1 if sl r' . as I ' . L Y., ,, ljllfll ldlll-fy'-,tk1'f'K'I
