Remember this fact, that in order to do your work wellsbe it that of a student or a toiler-it is absolutely essential that the body be kept in first-class condition. You have been told how necessary it is to keep the body clean in order to maintain good health. lt is quite as necessary that you keep your mind clean also. The young man who uses profane and obscene language constantly is soon classed as a rowdy and a tough. -i- JEFFERSONIAN -- The rganizafion of the Annual Staff l'erhaps a few of you remember the first mention of our camp annual, '4The Jeffer- sonianf' Hut if your mind does fail you concerning the early reports of it. I know that you recall clearly the many placards and circulars telling the reasons why you should support the movement and how cheap was the price. But these are merely general facts and possess nothing that you do not already know. T want to tell you of the formation of the staff and of its inner workings. lt was but a short time after the actual beginning of camp activities, that several persons interested in the study of publication, assembled before Lieut. Vivelker of K Company. They met there to discuss a plan which has been developed into this production. .Xt first their ideas were limited, even more than were their numbers, but it was not long until both of these obstacles were overcome. And it was not so difficult, for the Xifar Depart- ment had previously formulated a schedule for us to follow. They had sent to the officer in charge of Recreational Activities at each of the Citizens hlilitary Training Camps, quite a helpful outline, together with valuable data. So it was only natural that soon after the first informal meeting with Lieut. Wielker, he took some ten or twenty of the aspirants to the Post Hall. There each man was introduced to Lieut. fi. P. Earle, 6th Infantry, who was in charge of all recreational and educational activities at Jefferson Barracks during the C. Xl. T. C. adoption. The Lieutenant carefully explained the desire and purpose of a publica- tion. and by his talk. he filled all present with a determination to make the Annual 'ago overf' lfiach man was told what was to be expected of him if he began an active member- ship on the camp staff. An outline, or program of operation was decided upon and one had to but choose his path. He could either drop his intention because of the interference of extra hours, or he could do his best toward the fulfillment of Annual expectations. With a few exceptions every one of us set ourselves to make HThe Jeffersonianl' a popular, useful investment. A room was obtained in the Camp Headquarters Building and practically every week night, after the monotonous drill period, any one looking in would find about ten or twelve f'soldiers busily engaged in sorting pictures, in drawing, in forming manuscripts, and in 'fjust being busy. From the tired and haggard expressions of these youths an observer could readily single them, but at times a great smile would oy erspread their faces. Then one could know that some part of their work was completed. It ty as tedious. but with thorough application it was done. .Xnd now in concluding this brief resume, let me add a few words of eulogy to one who did more than any other towards this book's success. Only through the consistent aid tif l.ieut tilt-nn IJ. Welker were the members of the 'cjeffersonianw staff able to realize their hopes and to produce this work. It was by his whole-hearted support and counsel that they were draw n together, and held together, until its completion was assured.
