Jeannette High School Jeannette, Pennsylvania Jeannette High School—Jeannette, Pennsylvania Jeannette High School Edited by: Ginny Makosky Terry Marchetti The theme of this year's JAYHAWK might well be Moments to Remember. On the following pages are recorded many nostalgic memories of a wonderful year. As the doors, that opened wide last September, close behind us, they lock in our hearts forever many treasured memories. This year J.S.H.S., for the first time in its history, welcomed a foreign exchange student. Another first was the changing of the class ring design, breaking the old tradition. In the Autumn all eyes were focused on the football season. As the Varsity Queen reigned over a rain drenched stadium, the Jayhawks brought the Foothills conference trophy, home to stay. Fall wore into winter, and class parties, weekend dances, school projects, and reports, kept everyone very busy. Christ- mas vacation brought the Formal, and the selection of the Reign Dear Queen. With the new year came many resolutions to work much harder. Soon basketball season arrived, providing the student body with many thrilling evenings. Spring brought the prom. Can we ever forget the excitement of planning and decorating for These Precious Moments? Senior day marked the end of carefree high school days for the class of '64, and brought the promise of the future to the underclassmen. Now the seniors, well prepared for the future, become graduates of J.S.H.S. We, the staff, hope that this The 1964 JAYHAWK , will serve as an everlasting reminder of the memories that we've shared at Jeannette High. 2 A bell rings! A locker slams! and one of a hundred and eighty days begins. The halls are filled with friendly greetings as the students hurry on to classes. Between September and June J.S.H.S. is the center of student life. The school clubs start the year off by electing officers and selecting new members. Enthusiasm is the word for our school spirit. During the football and basketball seasons the students attended the games and cheered our boys on to championship titles. The pep assemblies will be remembered by all the students. STUDENT LIFE Friday night dances are always a popular part of student life. Here the students meet with their friends and a good time is had by all. But not all of the student's time is spent at dances or at sports events. Many hours are spent studying for a test or preparing a term paper. All of this is a part of student life. For a hundred and eighty days the halls of J. S. H. S. are alive with the activities of the students. But on the hundred and eighty-first day J. S. H. S. is quiet and empty, waiting for a new September. ADMINISTRATION WE OWE OUR SUCCESS TO THE UNTIRING HELP AND GUIDANCE OF OUR ADMINISTRATION MR. HENRY W. PHARAOH SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS The supervision of an entire school district is a tremendous responsibility. For this task, our school board was wise to chose Mr. Henry Pharaoh. As our superintendent of schools, Mr. Pharaoh's jobs vary from the preparation of a school budget to the decision of school vacation. His varied duties make him an extremely busy man. Therefore, for this time J. S. H. S. thanks him. Helping Mr. Pharaoh in his work is our principal, Mr. Francis W. Ma-tika. Although his job keeps him entirely in our building, his duties vary, from the assignment of teachers to teach the various subjects to the helping of students find the right thing to do after graduation. No matter how busy he may be, he always has time to help the student solve some of their problems. For his fine guidance and help, we thank him. 6 Seated Left: J. C. Gibson, Treasurer; Morrison F. These civic-minded residents of Jeannette have given much of their time and energy in handling the affairs of the school system. They have taken care of many financial and educational problems that have arisen. Through their wise guidance and helpful suggestions, our school has become widely known for its vocational, academic, and commercial training. 7 MR. FRANCIS W. OWENS 16 SENIORS 64 As we the class of 64 look back on our career at J.S.H.S, we view it with mixed emotions. We remember how small and insignificant we felt at our first assembly, but we soon became an integral part of the school with our sophomore class party Soph Touch of Autumn. The excitement of decorating and presenting our own entertainment was a new experience. As juniors we entered J.S.H.S. with a new confidence in ourselves. How proud we all were when we received our class rings being the last class to use the glass blower design. Once again, we prepared Now playing a large part in school activities we initiated realized the responsibilities of being seniors. A strange and exciting pride filled us as we heard the long awaited phrase, will event. There were many other activities, passing out squeegies and for our class party truly changing the cafeteria into a Castle of Dreams. plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. Time passes all too swiftly and we now the juniors and sophomores please remain seated while the seniors leave. Our last class party, Our Blue Heaven , was a happy but sad and meaningful ordering of name cards were just a few. Before any of us realized, Senior Class Day was near. This was the official end of our high school career. But for us it ended as we walked down the aisles as a class for the last time in our graduation robes bidding a silent goodbye to the halls of J.S.H.S. Looking back, we remember with both happy and sad thoughts the autumn we were sophomores. The idea of entering the senior high had made us excited and even a little frightened. It didn't take us long, however, to become an active part of the school activities. At our class party, Snowflake Lane, we discovered that school meant not only hard work, but also having fun together. Then, at the Senior Class Day, we moved up one step on the ladder and became juniors. We were naturally eager to receive our class rings, and when we found that our class was to be the first class to wear an altogether new ring, we were even more excited. Having grown thoroughly accustomed to high school life by now, as juniors we took an even greater part in school clubs and sports, and for the first time several of our classmates appeared as cheerleaders and majorettes. Our entire class worked diligently to make our second party, Autumn Rendezvous, an- Carl Wallace, Pres., Laura Cataldo, Sec., Kathy Hribar, Treas., Linda Hiteshue, Vice Pres. Before we knew it, the formal had come and gone, and the Prom was upon us. This year we were able to help in planning the prom and making it a success. The year had flown by, and eleven years of school had ended for us. On Senior Class Day, we assumed our new position as upperclassmen. As other senior classes before us have done, we also will try to do our best always, now and in the future. HOMEROOM 108 Bottom Left: Kathy Brown, Linda Chappell, Laura Cataldo, Stella Carper. SOPHOMORES - 66 When we, the class of 1966, entered JSHS in September, we were at a crossroads in our lives. We were no longer children, but full-fledged high school students. Since we were greenies, we bore the brunt of the upper classmen's jokes, but we had too many new experiences to occupy our time. Our first class party Autumn Fiesta was a big success; the cafeteria decorated in our colors, orchid and white, and gay autumn shades and hues, the entertainment will always be remembered as the first event of our new lives. The Christmas Formal, our first big dance, came and went. We groaned as mid-year approached and the end of the semester brought moaning over grades which we thought ought to be better. But we redoubled our efforts, and the second semester took wings. On Senior Day we bade farewell to the Class of 1964 and wished them the best in everything. We now take our place as upper classmen and look forward to two more rewarding years at Jeannette Senior High School. Each of the classes, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, hold their party in the school cafeteria. Members from the respective class serve on various committees. The highlight of each party is usually the entertainment, which is held in the auditorium. For the sophomores, the night of Nov. 1, was really an 'Autumn Fiesta. Demonstrating their originality by using autumn hues in their decorations, and showing initiative in their entertainment program, the sophomore party provided a good Activities ACTIVITIES Activities Activities Activities Activities time for all. Selecting Autumn Rendezvous for their theme, the juniors held their class party on November 15. Working together as a ciass, decorating and entertaining provided the junior class with many pleasant memories. Our Blue Heaven, the selected theme for the senior class of '64', found the cafeteria decorated in blue and white, the class colors. Many fond memories were recalled on December 7, which shall never be forgotten. The class parties give the members of all three classes a chance to work and enjoy themselves together. Enlivened and active class spirit not only helps for a better class, but also a better school. 65 YEARBOOK STAFF Bottom left: Patty D'Orazio, Chris Hansen, Terry Marchetti, Ginny Makosky, Katie Heasley, Gloria Novak. JEANNETTE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND J.S.H.S. is proud to present their school bond under the capable leadership of Mr. John M. Lodszun. We will never forget the performances of the band at half times led by our drum major, Jim Leonard. The half time programs were always interesting and unique with that extra touch of our band. The band often spent long tiresome hours practicing with the majorettes led by Susanne Schmidt, Captain and Janis Kemerer, Co-captain. Another well-trained part of our band is the color guards headed by Marjorie Gurksnis. The color guards have always made a striking impression as they marched ahead of our band. At the close of the football season, the band holds their annual banquet where they honor the senior members. Also at this banquet the senior members receive their jackets. Many fund raising projects were planned such as the selling of candy and calenders. The band this year received the distinctive honor of participating in the Dick Hoak Day. The band also serves the community by participating in the parades and presenting concerts every spring at the different recreation centers. The officers of the band are: President, Rich Brasco; Vice President, Vic Mayhugh; Secretary, Susanne Schmidt; Treasurer, Gary Walro. The official end of the band year is the school picnic parade when senior members wear their caps and gowns. This marks the end of another year of wonderful memories. VARSITY FOOTBALL Enjoying one of the most successful seasons since 1958, the Jayhawk Squad compiled a record of eight wins and one loss. Our boys worked hard during each game under the watchful eye of Mr. William Baughman, the head coach. After easily defeating Penn Joint, and Peabody, Jeannette then played its roughest opponent at Hempfield High School. Although the team tried their best they were on the short end of a 14-0 score. Following the Hempfield loss the team went on to defeat Connelsville, Latrobe, Derry Area, Kiski Area, and Mt. Pleasant. With these wins behind them the varsity team was now ready to play Greensburg, their traditional rival. Although mired in mud, the Lions scored sixteen points in the first ten minutes of play, but no more. The fighting Jays bounced back and scored once before halftime and three times in the second half to clinch the Foothills Conference Championship for the third time and also the county title. The winning of the conference title may have surprised a few doubtful fans, but the consistently good sportsmanship did not. Three senior Jayhawkers were named to the Foothills First Team and several more received honorable mention. Thus the Jayhawk Squad ended the season in success. Cheerleaders Under the supervision of Mr. Priolo the cheerleaders for the 1963-1964 school year have proven to be one of our best. Our versatile captain, Diane Lomicka, and co-captain, Barbara Null, along with the rest of the active members lead us in our cheers for victory. Victory was really the battle cry for the champions of our football and basketball teams, but the extra push the boys needed was given by the cheerleaders and by the backing of the student body. The cheerleaders have worked very hard practicing and preparing programs for our football, basketball games, and the assemblies. They have been faithful to the team and the Alma Mater in all kinds of weather. 'They've got spirit describes the JSHS cheerleaders.
