JEANNETTE. PENNA y k ft® • ,, V W i f 3 Cv' t 7 y INTRODUCTION Each year another class leaves the halls of J.S.H.S. to become citizens of our nation. We have received a well-rounded education, learning not only by doing classwork but by participating in sports, clubs, and the social activities. The administration and teachers have done their best to prepare us for the future, now that future is left to us. We have found that there are times when it is necessary to be serious as well as times to be carefree, and during these years we have experienced joy and sorrow, excitement, anger, worry and pride. Each one learned that to get the very best from life, you must put your best into everything you do. We have worked, played and studied together and in doing this we shared many unforgettable moments. We, the staff, hope that this yearbook will always serve as a reminder of these special moments in this school term. -Jk cd, AX -cvy Ou tudX -Jjun hxU' vu' cl uL nou OKcu CUdU HuXa- mutty, (khuu'eujX ACTIVITIES ('p cyxxJL 1. juoJ Y 3- -t“| jUy oi AJ - tfjuxX yj-o-to aa C-'wI t'A ' JjJlJJj - y4 6l SPORTS page 72 w. £- 7 ’Vs A cm ? 3 FACES ’63 6- - - tJ}-----„ (ll MA, w. a cT ' (V P-f j iSz-p- tA.ZV- L? 4 i A, fax tu i jis V: t ■ '' ‘J S A ) ' ' ■ JU+J Administration tA't, Xo j ' Vy Lp jj Joy f; ' ju fiZWf A'fV7 Faculty Juniors Sophomores PEOPLE To obtain knowledge and a good education is the main reason everyone attends school. The knowledge which J.S.H.S. offers us, helps us to reach our goals and fulfill our ambitions. A well-rounded College Preparatory course is offered to individuals who wish to further their education in college and study in a specific field. The Commercial Department turns out many fine secretaries and accountants. The high school also offers courses in the Homemaking Department, Beauty Culture Department, and the various shops to serve as vocational training for those interested in these fields. All students who attend Jeannette Senior High School are given the opportunity to obtain knowledge. It is our challenge and responsibility to use and expand this knowledge to benefit ourselves and our community The efficient, hard working Administration of our school district sees that each student receives a good education. This Administration is headed by Henry W. Pharaoh, the Superintendent of our school district. The responsibilities of his office are great for he directs the education of all of the youth of Jeannette. The superintendent serves as a link between the school board and staff members as well as between the school and the public. He must also prepare the school annual budget and administer to the functioning of the budget, supervise the professional and non-professional staff and recommend personnel to be hired by the school board. The responsibilities and duties of our principal. Francis W. Matika, are also large in number. For in addition to preparing a schedule for the students and faculty, he must direct the extra-curricular activities and assembly programs, hold fire drills, conduct teachers meetings, have parent conferences and pupil counseling, make classroom visitations, supervise testing programs, and carry out hundreds of very essential duties which must be discharged to have a good school year. Our Superintendent, Principal, Vocational Directors and Board of Education, all work hard to insure the students of Jeannette Senior High a good, well-rounded education. We remember our first assemblies as sophomores and how different everything seemed. Interesting clubs offered us an opportunity to make new friends and to participate in group activities. Everyone had fun while working to make our first class party, Autumn Whirl, a success. As the year closed we looked forward to the coming years as the upper classmen. We finally felt that we had become part of our school when we entered as juniors. Many of our friends were chosen as majorettes and cheerleaders and represented our class during the assemblies and sport activities. Our officers and classmates worked hard to make our second party, Midnight Magic, a success. It seemed no time at all until our class rings had arrived and we proudly showed them off to the sophomores. The Christmas Formal was another event that made our second year more enjoyable and even more so when Margie Lunn was chosen as “Reigndeer Queen.” Being juniors we were able to serve on the Junior-Senior Prom committees and attend our first all night activity. We soon realized that our second year was drawing to a close and that we would soon be seniors. On Senior Day we watched as the graduating class took the spotlight and then left to us the honor of being the upper class-men. It was a wonderful feeling to finally enter the building as seniors and to hear “will the sophomores and juniors please remain seated while the seniors leave,” at the close of each assembly. Kip Skavinski was our class president who led us through our three years at J.S.H.S. Our assemblies were opened by Ed Kratovil, president of the Student Council, and by a member of the senior class reading the Bible. During the football season our assemblies were conducted by the cheerleaders with Patti Clark, captain, and Shirley DeMarohis. co-captain leading. The majorettes usually entertained us with one or two routines led by Nancy Prinkey. captain, and co-captain, Phyllis Watson. Our last days of school went quickly and provided us with many wonderful memories of our last year together. With the Senior Banquet and the Awards Assembly our year was completed and on Senior Day we reviewed our year and found many memories that are sure to be treasured throughout our future memoriam IN REVERENT MEMORY OF OUR CLASSMATES WHO HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM US: JAMES O’NEIL AUGUST SEIBEL FEBRUARY 17, 1960 FEBRUARY 17, 1960 SAUNDRA BURGART FEBRUARY 14, 1963 SENIORS REMEMBER SHARON ABRAHAM JEANINE BAKER EDWARD BARCLAY SHARON ABRAHAM “Sharon” Course—Secretarial Pep Club 3; Commercial Club 4. ACTIVITIES '63 Cheerleaders Majorettes ACTIVITIES Long after forgetting our classes in history, math, and grammar, the students of J.S.H.S. will remember the good times that they have had participating in the many social activities. Whatever your interest or talent, there is a club, sport, or organization to offer fun, enjoyment, and a chance to meet and work with many different people. The pep assemblies, dances, football games, Christmas formal, club meetings, Senior day, the Prom, — all of these are a part of the active social life in our school. Everyone enjoys taking part in the many varied activities and will long remember the good times they had and the many friends they made. Yearbook IEANNETTE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND BAND Perhaps the most frequently heard and seen organization representing our school is the talented Jayhawk marching band, under the capable direction of Mr. John M. Lodzsun. No matter what the weather, our band could always be seen at the football games giving inspiration to the team. They practiced on the field every day as well as many evenings. The results were the spectacular and varied half time shows we all enjoyed so much. The praise received was ample reward for a job well done. How proud we were as they marched down the field led by our high stepping drum major, Ed Barclay. What a lot of credit the majorettes deserve for their intricate routines led by Nancy Prinkey, captain, and Phyllis Watson, co-captain. The entire band looked forward eagerly to the annual banquet held after football season. FIRST ROW. left to right: M. Jobe. R. Knauss, P. Osborne, A. Blasco. J. Kennedy, S. Schmidt, D. Sylvester, L. Altman. 74 The band elected officers to transact necessary business. President was Patsy Moffa; Vice President. Ken Slezak; Secretary, Anita Howe; and Treasurer, Rich Brasco. Then the band practiced diligently for their spring concert. Their efforts were well rewarded when the curtain rose on another fine performance, enjoyed by all. The band not only serves the school but the community as well. Their lively music could always be heard as they proudly led many parades through town. With the school picnic parade the year ended. The seniors shed the traditional red and blue uniforms and donned their caps and gowns to march for the last time as a member of the Jayhawk band. Down through the years the fond memories of these wonderful moments will linger on. THIRD ROW: J. Metz, R. Lapina, P. Stokum. Ed Monstrola, R. Matthews, P. Casper, J. Scarlett. K. Baughman. T. BAND Our pretty 1963 Majorettes are led by captain, Nancy Prinkey, and co-captain, Phyllis Watson. Our Majorettes deserve much praise for injecting school spirit into our student body. Working along with the Cheerleaders and Pep Band, they added to our Pep Assemblies. Their hard work brought successful results as they entertained along with our J.S.-H.S. Lets go” is a familiar phrase heard by the fans of J.S.H.S. The 1962 cheerleaders led by Captain Patti Clark and Co-Captain Shirley DeMarchis showed pride and enthusiasm as they aroused school spirit in both the pep assemblies and the football and basketball games. Their hard work at perfecting cheers and pep songs and organizing the cheer practices was rewarded by the enthusiasm and spirit shown by the student body. PLAYED FOR OUR LISTENING ENJOYMENT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR Every year our orchestra, led by Mr. Lodzsun works hard to present us with good music. They take an active part in presenting a beautiful Christmas assembly to our student body and always succeed. This year is certainly no exception. A few of these talented musicians are selected each year for District and County Orchestra Festivals. The orchestra rounds out our musical year by playing for Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. We wish to thank the Orchestra and Mr. Lodzsun for the fine musical programs they have presented to us. THE SWEETEST MUSIC NEVER A SOUR NOTE?? CHORUS For the beautiful inspiring music the Jeannette Senior High School Chorus can’t be surpassed. This well-organized group is under the capable leadership of Mr. John M. Lodzsun. At Christmas time the chorus along with the orchestra and the drama department presents its annual Christmas Program. Each year selected members participate in County and District Festivals. Girls' Gym Class SPORTS Sports at Jeannette have always been very important. The Jeannette Jay hawks have a reputation for good sportsmanship, of which all can be proud. With its 5, 3, 1 record, our football team has produced its first winning season since 1959. This was proven to be a result of the overall team effort. Although this season did not prove as successful on the basketball court, the team played hard and won the support of the fans. Wrestling, track, and golf also play an important role in our athletic program. Team participation and learning to be a good loser as well as a good winner are qualities taught by participating in athletics. There remains to the future students of J. S. H. S. the challenge to maintain the school’s reputation of good sportsmanship. 105 FIRST ROW, left to right: Arthur Fleming, Bud Gisane, Jim Guidone. VARSITY CHARGERS ENJOY A WINNING SEASON VARSITY FOOTBALL—1962 JAYHAWK ELEVEN COPS WINNING SEASON There are gleams in the eyes of J.S.H.S. football fans since the Jayhawks ended the 1962 campaign with five victories, three defeats, and one hard-fought tie. With Mr. William Baughman as head coach the Jayhawks time and again displayed the winning combination of talent, training, practice, and the determination to win. In the opening game against Penn Joint the team held them scoreless. Against Peabody, the Pittsburgh City League Champs, the Jayhawks played to tie in a close, hard-fought game. After dropping one to Hempfield, the Jays came bouncing back to trample Connelsville and Latrobe. Surprisingly Norwin held the Jayhawks scoreless in the next game. The Jayhawks easily defeated Vandergrift and were victorious over a highly rated Wilkensburg team. In the last game at Greensburg the Jayhawks suffered a defeat in which the Jays, marred by penalties, could get but one tally which came in the final quarter of play. It is safe to say that those who attended the contests witnessed exciting play and true sportsmanship. There is no doubt that the Jayhawks will continue their winning record in the years to come. Hopes are running high that these boys will carry our banner to victory next year. Through diligent practice and hard-fought games they consistently outplayed their opponents, but the scores do not tell the degree of excellence with which they played. Although the exhibition games did not seem to indicate a good season to come, the league competition showed that these boys had the qualities that make good athletes. After the first three games we were in second place with two wins and one loss. Earl Highlands, second leading scorer on the team, closes out two fine varsity seasons and has provided the fans with many thrills by his clever ball handling, dribbling, and shooting. Honors’: second team all section chosen to participate in county coaches all star game. College prospect. Kip Skavinski, varsity participant three years, lettered his senior year. Did not see too much action; however consistently reliable and a credit to the team. Used a one-hand push shot from outside and liked to drive in scoring. Jeff Byrnes, a junior transfer student, was ineligible most of the season. Saw limited action, returns next year. Bobby Capretto, a junior, one of the best defensive ball players on the team. Strong competitor, played his best game at home against Norwin, will be back next year. Ron Guest, Mr. Davis—Coach. Jim Leonard, 6'1 junior, leading team scorer and rebounder, specializes in jump shooting and driving. An exciting basketball player. Second year let-terman, chosen second team all section. Expectations high for next year. College prospect. Thrills Came Thick and Fast Phil Saxton, tallest man on the squad at 6'4 . Plays pivot, likes to shoot turn around jump shots. Showed bright spots throughout the season. Played his best game against Hempfield. Can develop into fine basketball player for next year. Marty Sliwoski, a junior, first year on squad. Saw limited action. Showed plenty of desire and hustle. David Whigham, a junior, one of the best shots on the team. Started slow but came on strong late in the season. Deadly jump shooter, likes to drive. Played his best game of the season at home against Norwin. Looking toward a better season next year. Ron Guest, played quite a bit of varsity basketball as a sophomore. Likes the jump shot. At 5'9 one of the team’s best rebounders. Letterman with bright basketball future. Carl Wallace, sophomore that broke into the starting line up. Possible bright future in basketball. Best game was played against Mt. Pleasant Joint, scored 21 points. Good jump shooter and rebounder. Letterman, will return for the next two years. At the end of the ’63 season, the Jayhawkers held fifth place, but by losing only two players, the future for our varsity team looks much brighter. MANAGERS LARRY TWIGGER, JOHN HYLWA, DON KESSEL, RON KURPIESKI, GREG SKAVINSKI. MR. CARL DAVIS VARSITY COACH Jr. Varsity Basketball The J.S.H.S. Junior Varsity Basketball squad, under the direction of Charles Hursh, ended this years team effort with a record of 7 wins and 14 losses. The team, made up of sophomore and junior boys, provided exciting sports entertainment, playing before each Varsity contest. These boys worked and played hard and many of the games were lost by only a few points. Each game, whether won or lost, was played for the good of the team. Many of this years Jayvee players may prove to shape up as assets to next years Varsity squad. The score sheets of the number of points cannot tell the whole story of the Jayvee games. The excitement and eager drive of the players, the school spirit aroused in the fans, or the lessons in sportsmanship and skill are all a part of the contest. The students of J.S.H.S. wish these boys luck in the next years, knowing that they will go on being players that our school can be proud of. That Is A High One! Stars In The Future I. V.
