NINETEEN SIXTY TWO JAYHAWK IEANNETTE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL JEANNETTE, PENNSYLVANIA 2 Dear Student Body of J. S. H. S., Throughout the school year, our staff has worked hard to compile a yearbook each one of you will enjoy and treasure as a memento of this school term. Even as each of us entered the door last August, we will now close that door behind us, and lock in a year of our lives. Under the guidance of parents and teachers, many personal goals were proudly accomplished. Yet we have spent many moments together as one student body; and each time we stood to sing our “Alma Mater,” there was a feeling of unity and companionship. Together we shared our classes and learned the importance of a good education. Our activities have taught us, together, the value of social life. And so, Student Body, we thank you; for without your vivacious and energetic personalities, we could never have presented a yearbook that contains so many nostalgic memories of a wonderful year. Yours sincerely, The 1962 “Jayhawk” Staff FOREWORD CONTENTS £ People ADMINISTRATION 6 FACULTY 10 SENIORS 19 JUNIORS 50 SOPHOMORES 54 Activities BAND 62 PUBLICATIONS 64 CLUBS 68 HONOR GROUPS 82 MUSIC 88 Athletics . We were proud of being the first class to complete three years in the new building. This, however, marked our second year as greenies! After electing Jack Marnoni president of our class, we planned for a busy year. The high point of our freshman year having been Rose Fontana’s receiving the Reign Dear queen crown, we were especially happy to congratulate our new queen, Shirley Crescenzo. Plane geometry, typing, clubs, and try-outs occupied so much of our time that we hardly realized we would soon be upper-classmen. Football took on a new importance with many of our boys on the field with Pauline, Janie, Diane, Barb and Jack leading cheers. The cafeteria was really transformed into an Ice Palace for our junior party. Soon we received class-rings which guaranteed our belonging in JSHS. Once again our class retained the crown as Polly Ferree was chosen for the honor of Reign Dear Queen. Few of us realized while planning for our first Prom that another year was quickly drawing to a close and that we would soon re-enter JSHS as seniors. We shall always remember the thrill of student council president’s, George Dobrinick, saying at the close of assembly, “Sophomores and juniors please remain seated while seniors leave”. Somehow the alma mater gained added significance as our majorettes, led by Babs and Judi, concluded each half-time show at the football games. School spirit soared under Glenna Storey’s direction as Pep Club president. How proud we were of our classmates when they received special honors during awards assembly. Friendships grew deeper throughout our senior year as we worked together towards graduation. At Commencement we looked back, as we shall many times again, to our experiences in high school and found we had received the key that unlocks the door to the future — our education. Thomas F. We are now on the threshold of our senior year. Our junior year holds many moments which we shall always cherish and some that we would like to forget. As juniors, we became part of J. S. H. S. Many of our friends became majorettes, cheerleaders, and active in sports. Our class officers, Kip Skavinski, President; Don Kessel, Vice-president; Karen Pryor, Secretary; and Ed Kratovil, Treasurer, made our class party, Midnight Magic, a success, and everyone who went had a wonderful time. At last, our long-awaited class rings arrived, the symbol of upperclassmen. The Formal came and went before we realized it, and then only one semester of school remained. And then the Prom was here. This year we worked hard to raise money to make this prom a success. We all thought our efforts were well worth while when we entered the beautifully decorated gym on that night which will long be remembered. Then came the day we became seniors, Senior Class Day. Our junior year was truly over. So ends the story of this memory-filled year. And we will try our best to assume the responsibilities and leadership which will be expected of us as seniors. In August when we, the class of 1964, became sophomores, we realized that we had embarked upon the most important voyage of our lives. Our high school days would be ones that we would want to cherish and savor even after graduation. Now as we look back upon our sophomore year, we are proud of our achievements. With the maturity we’ve gained, we welcome the challenges that await us in our Junior year and look forward to meeting the sophomores who will follow us. Our congratulations to the class of 1962 with the hope that your accomplishments will be many and your obstructions few. 55 Home Room 104 D. Rernie, J. Brewer. J. Capparelli, N. Balderson, G. Our personality traits are seen more easily in us when we are in these various organizations and there is no class room pressure. Mock, Mr. Lodzsun BAND We proudly present the Jeannette Senior High School marching band under the capable direction of Mr. John Lodzsun. From the bleachers we have seen the red and blue uniforms in formation while our high stepping drum major, Tom Gamble, marched down the center. With the excellent leadership of Captain, Babs Byerly, and Co-Captain, Judi Lodzsun, the majorettes presented a series of outstanding halftime performances. All of us were proud when our band was asked to march at a Steeler football game. At the close of football season the entire band gathered at the annual band banquet. Even though football season was over, the band worked harder than ever to prepare for the annual band concert held in the spring. Try it again . . . this time play! S. Watson, S. Crescenzo, T, Mangini, C. Hiteshue, J. Lodzsun, N. Prinkey, G. Staney, A. Barci, P. Watson, B. Byerly MAJORETTES Their efforts were rewarded when the curtain rose on another fine concert. Once again the band was extended the privilege of attending the Cherry Blossom Festival. Through the endeavor of every member of the band this trip was made possible. Finally on school picnic day the senior band members took off their traditional red and blue uniforms and wore instead their caps and gowns to march for the final time as a member of the JSHS band. But long after, they will always remember what a rewarding experience it was to belong to the band. The band elected officers to carry out its many functions. President was Tom Stokum; Vice President, Pat Moffa; Secretary, Shirley Crescenzo; and Treasurer, Jim Tressitt. Preparing for the trip to the Capital Yearbook Staff K. Domin, K. Wilson, G. Storey, A. Jeannette Senior High School, a school of five hundred sixty-five students, participates in Class AA football, Class A basketball, wrestling, golf, and track. Jeannette teams, known as the Jayhawks, hold a strong reputation for good sportsmanship. Jeannette boys are taught the fundamentals of the sport in which they participate; but, more important, they are taught that winning is not the main purpose. ATHLETICS 91 VARSITY FOOTBALL Our gridiron heroes pushed their hardest towards victory In August, our 1962 football team began a rigid training camp at McKee Stadium. With Mr. William Baughman as head coach, the boys were kept moving under a tough schedule of assignments, scrimmaging, calesthenics, and diet. Although our boys tried their best, the record at the end of the season showed six hard-played defeats and three wins. Most people will agree that the boys had a lot of hard luck this year. They will be the gridiron heroes who will take our place on the field. Without their support during practice, in the field house, and on the sidelines, we couldn’t have carried on the season with high spirits. Best of luck to them in the future years at J. S. H. S. Willis, Mr. Davis VARSITY BASKETBALL Our boys provided for a most interesting and exciting season VARSITY BASKETBALL Although we did not win any trophies this year, we would like to congratulate Coach Davis and his boys for their six wins and sixteen losses. We lost every exhibition game but one — beating Turtle Creek 57-46. Things began to pick up when we defeated Derry, Mt. Pleasant, and Hempfield. The first half of the season ended with a victory for the Jays over Norwin. The second half started with a loss to Derry by a score of 75-64. Our next victory was over Mt. Pleasant 50-45. We ended the season with five losses to Hempfield, Greensburg, Connellsville, 95 Latrobe, and Norwin. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL JAYVEES Under the direction of Coach Chuck Hursh, the Jayvees had a score record of four wins and eighteen losses. Not much experience and short boys added much to the kind of season the Jayvees have had this year. But as in previous years the boys will do better next year and for some of them the year after, and prove that they can be assets to the Varsity Squad. Of course, and as always, the whole school was behind them no matter what the outcome happened to be. So, we all wish them the best of luck for the years to come. We know they will turn out a team that anyone and everyone will be proud of. Jesse Willis Our star athlete at J. S. H. S. Dinsmore, P. Clark, B. Huesdash Cheered through rain and snow, wins and losses Who are the peppiest kids in school? The cheerleaders, of course! When these ten rolled out on to the field of red and blue, the whole stadium rang with enthusiasm. No matter what the weather, they kept on smiling and cheering. With all this enthusiasm, how could our spirits ever have been dampened? This year with the combined efforts of everyone, our student body never sounded better at the football and basketball games. But being a cheerleader is not all fun and pleasure. A lot of practicing and figuring goes behind it. Every summer they practice until the first game and then on Thursday nights when school starts. This year five members cheered for the last time. They are Pauline Laubscher — Captain, Janie Brust — Co-Captain, Diane Carey, Barbara Keener, and Jack Marnoni. WRESTLING VARSITY WRESTLERS Despite the fact that the Jayhawk wrestlers did not have a winning season, we would like to congratulate them for their fine efforts. Coach Ray Bronzie did the best he could with the few boys who tried out. The student body showed a lack of support for this part of the athletic program. The boys who wrestled are well co-ordinated and are well conditioned both mentally and physically. One of the best wrestlers Mr. Bronzie has coached is Jim Guy who will be back next year. The twelve members on the team have high hopes of continuing last year’s success. Since the team started in 1933, Jeannette has only captured the Section 4 title twice. There are only 3 veterans remaining from last year’s team; Jim Boerio, Rick Elias, and Joe Kellner. The team last year advanced to the semi-finals in WPIAL competition.
