S., we didn't think we'd ever make the grade. The up- perclassrnen seemed so superior and we won- dered if we would ever achieve their confidence. But we did, With Bill Brasco as our President, the year passed too quickly, and suddenly we were Sophomores. By now, we were beginning to Ht in. We real- ized that there was more to high school than classes. How proud we were when: our class- mate, Jackie Greenberg, was chosen to march with the maiorette sciuad, Nancy Perko started on the road that was to bring her much success Musiak, and win so many in Forensic, Valesky, Brasco, Menz, Hampton helped our football team victories, These were only a few of the happy memories we had stored up when we became Juniors, OFFICERS . , .2 .An g ' ,S-e gg. akxas FFKIF-' .3 3 Well, we were finally upperclassmen, Now we went to assembly with the Seniors. This was really a big year for us. Smolenski, Nlolenari, Williamson, and Pharaoh were doing our class proud on the basketball court. Our Junior Party was one we shall never forget. Then, before we knew, it was Moving Up Day, and we were now Seniors. Our high school days are over, but to those who come after us, this is our story THE SENIOR STORY OF l956! RESPONSIBILITIES AS SENIORS After three successful high school years, the iun- ior class now stands ready to accept the duties and responsibilites that come with their senior year. It seems like only yesterday that we entered the halls of J. l-I. S. as bewildered little freshies By the time we were sophomores we were proud to be considered the upper part of the lower class. More of us were turning out for football and basketball games since our boys were be- ginning to make a good showing on the teams. We spent our summer vacation that year looking forward to the time when we would be consider- ed upper classmen. Now we were iuniors, our long awaited goal. We Selecting Programs for the Prom could st in assemblies with the seniors. We proudly displayed our class rings, which seemed like a symbol of our position. We cheered the teams on more faithfully than ever since most of our boys were now members of the varsity squads. We especially enioyed our Junior Party. Everyone looked so grownup in their party clothes, and our dancing showed much improve- ment. When we donned our formal clothes for the Profn, one look told us that we had come a long way since we were freshmen. Now we are looking forward to our senior year. We are going to do our best to come up to the standards set by those before us. l l l j' fs 1.1 1 TE JUNN v fue can no longer be cailecl the 'green treshies , instead, we :lass Ourselves as the upper lower the halls experience, classfhenj' We lcnovv our Nay aroand of Jeannette High School and througr we have learned the rules. The gym looked out- standing decorated in our class colors, orchid and white. By some miracle, the boys forgot their shyness and asked the girls to dance. The floor show was very entertaining and the refresh- ments couldn't be beat. This year we struggled through our tifteen page history report, stumbled over our Latin Il assign- ments, and got all mixed up when it came to our Algebra II equations. The Christmas season meant a nice long vacation, 50 which included the Christmas Formal. The girls were in satin slippers and their prettiest gowns, and the boys in shiny shoes and their best suits. Spring included the Prom, the Senior Assembly, and the picnic. The Senior Assembly is one event that remains embedded in our memories, for in the moving up exercises, we were made upper classmen. This was the first time we stop- ped to realize how fast high school was really going. Yearbook day was the last time we entered J.H.S. until September, so, we tucked our sophomore memories away, never to forget them. 2 V 1 a , , ,,,,,, . I V ' 50 4 , Q, W f gg ., ' L -Vw f , - V. Football season has arrived and they must prepare to march at the foot! ball games. The band must have a differ- ent show to perform every week, thus they must learn new music and routines quickly. Tvvice a week they practice at the football field for the on-coming halftime show. Here the band really deserves praise, for very frequently they must practice on a muddy field or when the weather is freez- ing cold. When football season is over, the band then starts what is known as concert season. Their main objective is their annual concert which is usually held in April. During these weeks they have long, hard rehearsals, Their efforts are rewarded by a firie concert, heartily enioyed by all. Also during this season J. H. S. band members attend the six music festivals which are held during the year. lt is an honor and a privilege for bandsmen to be chosen to represent Jean- nette at these festivals. On picnic day the band dons their uniforms once again for their final march of the year. VARSITY FOOTBALL-As the last strains of the Star Spangled Banner die away, there arises a roar from the stands as the Jean- nette Jayhawks iog onto the field. The cheerleaders lead the Welcome cheer marking the opening of the l955 football season. ln the opener, the Jays had it all the way with an easy win of 18-O over a well-trim- med Crafton eleven. On the night of September 16, the Jays took a more challengable game from Schenley by the score of 27-14. Deciding the decisive play The Creekers of Turtle Creek dampened Jeannette's hopes for title championship by the score of 12-O. lt was a hard fought game, but still there was hope for a near perfect season. September 30 found the Jays dropping an- other close one to a high-spirited Connells- ville team. It was a tough battle that proved a point, we had a good defensive set-Up. Then the Jays traveled to meet our indirect, determined rival, Munhall. It was a good game, with the Jays coming out on top with a 20-6 victory. October 28 found the Jays traveling on a highly effective record of 5 wins and 2 losses, to meet a fairly organized ball club, the Wilkinsburg Indians. This iust wasn't Jeannette's night as the Indians scalped the Jays 20-O. In the traditional closing game of the seas- on, the local eleven went down in defeat 7-O to a highly-spirited Greensburg team. It was a bitter defensive game all the way and wasn't over until the final gun sounded marking a 5-4 season for the Jays. Charging the dummy Run! Bill, Run! umm? VIGOROUSLY CHEERED THE TEAM ON, RAIN OR SHINE A combination of pep, vim, and vigor, describes our cheering squad. Led by their vivacious cap- tain, Carol Miller, the squad was composed of juniors and sophomores. Our cheerleaders promoted school spirit in rain or shine, in mild weather or freezing tempera- he tures. When these twelve rolled on the field in their uniforms of red and blue, the entire field seemed to ring with enthusiasm and a strong feeling of invincibility. It cannot be denied that our cheerleaders spurred our team on to victory and made our sports season one which was a comparative success. 91 Fight for it, Smo!
