Then came the Senior assembly which we all longly waited for because now we be- came Juniors, only referred to as upperclassmen. In 1953, we Juniors looked forward to what was To be our most exciting year. Our Junior party came quickly and no one shall ever forget the spell Claudine Gantt cast on us as she sang. At last our party ended as all good things must, and next we put our thoughts on the Christmas formal. The maiority of us attended and well always remember what a wonderful time we had. Soon Spring came and the Prom was being discussed everywhere, Well never forget what a perfect night it was and most of all how proud we were that it was our class president, Tess Plaitano, who led the grand march. The end of school came and we all wished we could be Juniors again, but now we were Seniors and on the last road of our four year iourney. Our Senior year seemed the greatest of them all The football team was one of the best and after the season was over we cheered iust as hard for basketball and wrestling. Our Senior party seemed to come and go in no time. included in our activities for the first time were elections and campaigns in preparation for Youth Day. The Christmas formal was the largest one we ever had and our first all night prom was such a huge success it'll never be forgotten. As last Com- mencement Day came and we sang our Alma Mater for the last time together and each of us separated on our way. But we shall always remember the friends we've made and the good times we had in JHS. Looking back to the time when we as green freshies never knew quite when to go and what to do. The outstanding event was the freshman party .... even though the boys stood on one side .... the girls on the other. After what seemed a short vacation we became sopho- mores. Feeling quite grown-up we took the new freshies under our wings for protection. This year yellow slips made their first appearance. Came senior assembly and we took our place as iuniors. We all liked going to the assemblies with the seniors but deep inside we resented having to stay seated until they walked out. One of the unforgetable days was the receiving of our class rings which was the real mark of being an upperclassman. We shall never forget our iunior party and the humor- ous entertainment. After a wonderful evening, we trudged happily homeward. The months tiew and March saw us anticipating the iunior-senior prom. Mur- murings of corsages and frothy new formals were on every tongue. The dance was a success and the iuniors had really come through. The year was not entirely HOME ROOM 203 Sponsor: Miss Duncan Row One: P. Ferree, S. Feld, P. Grimes, B. Gordon, V. Gurknis, P. We were introduced to the mysteries of chemistry and math and some of us seemed to like to spend our spare evenings in the detention hall. In spite of the usual school problems causing many of us to be discouraged, we never for- got for a moment that we were upperclassmen. Education at present was an outstanding section of our lives. In the future, our school days would be remem- bered as our best days. We, the iunior class are un- able to see into the future, but we are thoroughly aware that within our grasp is the security of a peace- ful world. And now as we move up into our last year we hope to make our senior year the best of them all. Keenan, September brought us back to the familiar halls of J. H. S., excited and happy as we assumed our new roles as sophomores. It was a strange but wonderful feeling to know we were no longer the green freshmen of Jeannette High School. We smiled at the eager new students who fell into rank as the freshies. It was fun to watch them cautiously tile into the auditorium for the first assembly. How proud we were to be the experienced Sophomores with the honor of sitting in the middle section. We threw back our heads and shouted out the cheers as additional proof that we were really an important part of Jeannette High. We ioined clubs, marched with the band, struggled through Latin II, and became alumni of detention hall. Some of us stepped forward and showed the school that the future class of 57 was really tops. We'll never forget the first football game and how thrilled we were to see so many of our classmates as cheer- leaders, maiorettes, and players. S 0 P H O M O R E S Have Proudly Reachecl the Halfway Mark! 49 SOPHOMORES December 17 arrived and we all flocked down to the gym for the Holiday Hop. Girls in high heels, and rustling skirts and boys in shiny black shoes and white shirts enioyed every minute of our festive party. Christmas rolled by and soon we started a new year. We worked harder than ever to keep up with our increasing activities. We moaned and protested but we finally handed in that 15 page History Report on the last day, and struggled through a non-fiction book report, Hope 'to Accomplish Spring came and we were so excited as we looked forward to the prom, picnic, and Senior Assembly. At last that day came. We were upperclassmen! lt was a wonderful feeling to know we were now big wheels , but it made us sad to think our high school career was half over. This year has meant so much to us. Our friends and good times can never be dupli- caled. As we prepare for the future and strive for success, we will always hold a special place deep down inside for the memories of our Sophomore year in Jeannette High School. Whiteman. their first year as Frosh Presenting the grades of '58, The green treshies have embraced our Alma Mater as their own and are prepared to stick by her come what may. Eager to become a part of this seemingly enormous metropolis of J. H. S., they gave their wholehearted support to all athletic exhibitions, electioneering and even the onlooking upperclassmen. After petitions and campaigns Joe Yorio was elected president of the class. Betty Leonard assumed the title of veep while Janet Octave served inthe capacity of secretary and Nancy Jadot protected the bank roll. It wasn't long before these energetic frosh 'got into the swing of things and invaded the many clubs of Jean- nette High. The whole student body could see the pride with which that one line in assembly was recited. The gym looked extra-special clad in the class colors orchid and white, when they arrived at the Freshman Party. Mr. Shaul, the class advisor, was on hand to oversee the festivities of the evening. Not a freshie will forget that milestone in his freshman year, when after faithfully attended Nlonday classes, he stepped on the floor to try those new dance steps. The day when they were dubbed sophomores had been patiently awaited by the freshmen. Even with the excitement it was unanimously decided that this year hadn't been as bad and was a very memorable one. How we anticipated their approach and iistened for the first boom and rat-a-tat-tat of the drum before game time. Striking is the word for our strutting maiorettes who under their captain and co-captain Joyce Stark and Virginia Miller, were the obiect of much praise and approval this year for their part in unique half-time shows, and for their precise marching in parades. Then too, let's not forget Bill Berlin, our drum major, for his baton twiriing. And what an impression the tour color guards made as they proudly bore our flag, marching ahead of the band. As for the band itself, no adiectives can fitly describe the exact harmony of the blaring brasses, the tinkling of the bells, the clarity aawwmmem--WNW -'---'- 1 'Z ' WNSXQFQPSQXHEQESESWQEE, . Their Talent in Entertainment of the wood-winds, the rolling of the drums, We never could figure iustE how our pride and ioy manag- ed to keep such perfect time, play so outstandingly, and put on such difficult and extraordinary shows at half time. After football season and fall parades, concert time brought more work tp these aspiring musicans. But when they exhibited the 200 production of their labors to students and townspeople alike, in a beautiful and varied concert, we lnarveled at their professional performance. Knowing that all work and no play makes for dull band members, these J. H. S. musicians put to shame band banquets of other years and really lived it up at this year's. But these activities didn't climax the year's doings. With sudden maturity and sadness, senior members put aside their gay uniforms and donned their caps and gowns to play and march in the school picnic parade with the underclassmen. No, the class of '55 will not soon forget the band who so often stirred up their enthusiasm under the brilliant and capable guidance of Director John Nl. Lodzsun. Practice time for the band members PUBLICATIONS Our editors were kept busy Recorded Our News And Activities 60 YEARBOOK STAFF Well, we thought we couldn't, but we did! Did what? you ask. Published another Jayhawk and carried on a long tradition! With sudden maturity we seniors became serious minded as we accepted our assignments from our diligent editor Janet Bohince with eagerness and responsibility. John Love present- ed the sports and Janice Zellers and Barbara Dolan assumed the role of the keepers ot the purse , while Mr. Patterson was ever ready to advise and regulate staff members who went about their duties of linking up pictures and trying to cram all of the big moments and memories of this year into a hundred pages. To the senior class of JHS, to all four classes of our alma mater and most of all to our Jeannette High School we dedicate this annual of 1955. YEARBOOK COLLECTORS Did you make your payment on your yearbook yet? Patient yearbook collectors may have to ask this ques- tion in their respective homerooms a hundred times a day when the regular payment time rolls around. This responsible group regards its duty of taking orders and collecting quite seriously, and without their con- tribution our Jayhawk could not exist. OSCAR STAFF Presenting the industrious and creative crew of the Oscar staff! Under the direction of Editor-in-chief Linda Kohl, assisted by Assistant Editor Janet Bohince, News Editor Mary Ann Hart, Feature Editor Lois Burk, Sports Editor Chester Smolenski, Exchange Editor Anna Staney, Club Editor Donna Fisher, Cheif Typist Antoin- ette Cannell and Advertising and Business Manager Margie Fisher, leads on stories were discovered and assignments went to the staff to make ready for the tri weekly distribution. But the Oscar for which the students wait so anxiously could not have been publish- ed were it not for those on the staff who work equally hard but receive no recognition for their services and for the sponsor Mr. Stinebiser, whose time, ideas, and aid make the Oscar, the literary achievement it is. OSCAR COLLECTORS Tracking down stories and writing them up may be an important aspect of some newspaper work, but where the J.H.S. Oscar is concerned, the Oscar Collectors are the necessary elements. These able students give sales talks in homerooms, collect money, hand it in at a specific time, and Hnally distribute this high school publication to its subscribers. 5, Yam! if ., .. .W zz. ,SE E5 aw .45 f f .mQQf,gg,,5,, sax :wg M K W5.y,.,g3g5, fm 4 QUIZ CLUB For Freshmen only says Miss Duncan sponsor of the Quiz Club. VARSITY FOOTBALL I Each year, during the last few weeks of August, the football team invades Camp Buffalo to prepare for the coming gridiron contests. Along with the coaches, they take over the camp when the last vacationing boys and girls have gonel Until school reopens they build their bodies up to carry them through a rugged season of sports. Calisthehics, good food, and sunlight along with the regular football drills fill the schedule. The regular hours and hlabits they keep in training camp contribute greatly toward preparing themselves to defend their school. lCoaches Barnes, Baughman, and Amann constantly try ,to teach new tactics and new plays. Then on the first Friday after school reopens, they begin their season of football fame. ln the opening game of the season Jeannette defeated Crafton by a score of 33-6 at McKee Stadium. Scoring was distributed fairly evenly by the Jayhawk team with Schnupp, Guestafson, Gounder, and Valesky each tallying once. The next opponent for the Jays was Schenley, which proved to be no match for the rugged team, with the game ending 25-0. The Jays met Turtle Creek in their first AA contest. The score was 34-6 with Jeannette scoring in every period with Gounder adding to the game in kicking a held goal. S 1 BOB PRACEK OUR H ROES A We Are Proud of' Their Past Seasons The next win for Jeannette came at the expense of the Cokers from Connellsville. The Cokers however, got away to a fast start and scored on the second play from scrimmage. Jeannette came right back and scored and then went on to outclass Connellsville 38-6. The following two games were taken from Latrobe and North Huntingdon by scores of 33-O and 30-6 respectively. The night of October 22 proved to be the toughest of all the games when the Jays got past the Munhall eleven by a score of 14-7. The Jays got oft to a quick two touchdown start and this was sutticient enough to let the Jays win there seventh straight game. MELVIN SEMENKO BILL SCHNUPP The next week also proved to be a rough one with Jeannette beating Wilkinsburg by a thin score of 7-0. For the ninth and final win of the Jayhawk season came when Jeannette beat McKeesport by the score of T4-7, This was a hard fought game and wasn't over until the final gun went off. The Jayhawks lost their first game of the season against the bitter but high spirited rival, Greensburg by a score of 28-24. Our boys fought a rugged and tough game to the very end with the main loss in the four extra points. The 1955 Jayhawks can be proud of one of the best gridiron records in JHS, nine wins and one loss. CHEERLEADERS Yea team, leT's go! Who can be always heard yelling This familiar saying more oftener and faithfully than our vivacious cheerleaders. During football season They head all The pep rallies with their wonderous pep and energy. These gals and boys can always be seen on The football Held wholeheartedly cheering our boys on even though it may, be raining or snowing. They greet cheerleaders from other schools in their ever friendly manner and mingle among Them in good sportsmanship. , J COMPTON J. SCALZETTI, D. McCARTHY J- SIMMERS MILLER C. STAWICKI l B. DOLAN l But it's not all glory and honor being a cheerleader. They start practice early in August and after school starts can be found each Wednesday after school prac- ticing new motions and cheers. lt is after all their hard work they become so disappointed when students won't cheer. The pre season games gave no room for encourage- ment even though the Jays won the 'first game against Penn Township by a score of 63-35. Following this encounter Penn High and Schenley victored consecutive- ly over them. On the next showing they beat Wilmer- ding by a score of 70-62. Then Scott and Turtle Creek handed Jeannette their next two conquests but the Jays came back to defeat Sewickley Township by a score of 63-50. They then skimmed over Swissville by a score of 56-53 and for the third time in a row won over Scott 76-66. The exhibition season ended with a 5-4 record and the Jays were still a heavy favorite in the race for the Section ll Championship. In their opening games of section competition the Jay- hawks fell victim to Latrobe and N. Huntingdon 69-41 and 46-44. The Jays then traveled to Connellsville where they sprang ahead in the second half to drub the Cokers 65-47 for their first win ofthe season. ln a non section game the Jays took the worst beating of the year at Springdale by a score of 98-75. The next four section games proved defeat for the Jays. They were beaten by Uniontown 83-73, Greensburg 82-49, Latrobe 68-59, and N. Huntingdon 65-62. For the second and final win in Section Il basketball the Jay- hawks again beat Connellsville by a score of 52-51. Then the tide turned against the inspired Springdale Indians when they traveled here only to bow to our Jays by a 76-55 win. Closing theregular season to make a 2-8 record Uniontown trounced the Jays with a 71-51 score and one of the most exciting games of the season lead Greensburg to triumph with a 71-62 win. In the County Tournaments at Greensburg High School the Jays came through with a record of 2-1. They easily decisioned Rostraver Township and Scottdale 61-36 and 61-44 respectively. ln challenging Bellmar they were heart breakingly defeated in the final sec- onds of the game by a mere margin of 50-49. JOHNSON G, CUNNINGHAM E13 JUNIOR BASKETBALL Eager To Display Their Ability JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1954-55 Junior Varsity under the capable coach- ing of Mr. Baughman gave good signs tor a 'Future varsity. With a 15-5 record the season had proved a successful one. The Jayvees seemed to have what it takes height, speed and team work. They work as hard as the Varsity but never receive as much attention from student body. With their steady improvement it is certain that the Varsity ot the coming years will be one that all can be proud ot and looked upon with honor. JUNIOR W.P.I.A.L. BASKETBALL Under the coaching of Joseph Robino the tearn had a fair season. Since he took over the coaching position two section titles have been won. They had a long and tough season this year with an even 7 wins and 7 losses. The little Jays lacked experience and height but they had all the get up and go a coach could ask tor.
