COPYRIGHTED 1939 by Editor-in-Chief BETTY RUETTGER Business Manager GEORGE EVANS THE RED AND BLUE « THE PREMIER BY THE SENIOR CLASS 1939 JEANNETTE HIGH SCHOOL • JEANNETTE , PA. 9j HE Red and Blue staff presents in this yearbook a pictorial review of the past year’s school life. We have endeavored to capture, through the medium of the camera's eye, the spirit and enthusiasm of our fellow students and in this way to make this yearbook a treasury of memories for all who have attended our school. It is hoped that this book will constantly refresh the memories of our class mates and may ever be a source of joyous recollection to all. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE CITY OF JEANNETTE SECOND ROW: Mr. Seiler, Mr. Gilchrist, Mr. Floyd. Mr. Stouph FIRST ROW: Mr. Kneyp, Vice President; Mr. Gaskell, President of the Board, Mr. Adamson, Treasurer. ATHLETIC FIELD DEDICATORS Mr. Gaskell Dr. Snowden Mr. Adamson EIGHT Dr. F. B. Snowden Superintendent of Public Schools. Jeannette. Penna. Lafayette College Ph. B. University of Pittsburgh M. A.-Ed. D. □ □ □ My sincere congratulations are tendered the officers and members of the Senior Class. This, another splendid yearbook, sees one more fine group of Jeannette High School students completing high school as a foundation for higher learning or in preparation for immediate responsibility in life. This first year of my administration of the Jeannette city schools has been made very pleasant by the fine spirit of friendship and cooperation of the seniors and underclassmen. May we continue to build for Jeannette High School so that its graduates will find themselves worthy of a responsible place in our community and nation. The chief business of our school is to mold the boys and girls of today so that they will be the strong virtuous men and women of tomorrow. It is not entirely the particular subjects taught in school that count in after life, but it is the mental culture and moral stamina with which pupils commence the battle of life. This world wants boys and girls who conscientiously strive to embody within their own characters the best of all the attributes that the ages have taught us. I his yearbook stands as evidence of your high school activities in just such a preparation. FACULTY J. M. MACLAY, JR Principal A. B. Syracuse University M. Ed. Penn State University I e Lyon. The orchestra and two choruses, under the able leadership of Miss Olga Gagliardi, presented the outstanding play of the year “Hollywood Bound.” In addition to this the same group presented the annual Christmas pageant, which was acclaimed a real success. Last but not least in this musical organization is the band under the direction of Mr. Edwin Guest. SEVENTY VARSITY GRID SEASON Having one of the toughest schedules in many years, and having a squad of inexperienced boys, the Barnesmen suffered their first setback by Schenley High School of Pittsburgh at McKee Stadium to the tune of 19-12. The next game provided easier competition and the local team won over Se-wickley High by the score of 12-6. Taking advantage of the open date, the entire varsity squad witnessed the Tech vs. Duquesne game at Pitt Stadium in Pittsburgh. The following Saturday the Barnesmen traveled to Johnstown for an aerial setback, the score being 39-0. Playing a well experienced team from Morgantown, West Virginia, the Barnesmen suffered a defeat by the score of 32-0. The following Saturday traveling to Altoona the Jayhawks suffered another defeat, 27-0. The next opponent being our old rival “Norwin” which is always a “bang up” game, the score was a 0-0 tie. This game was played at the McKee Stadium. The next defeat was handed to the Jayhawks by Redstone Tup.; score 14-6. On Armistice Day, November 11. the Barnesmen played a “rip snorter” of a game with the Brown and White of Greensburg. The Barnesmen played head up ball all the way through only to suffer a setback, score 14-7. at Offutt Field. Greensburg. The concluding game was played on “Turkey” Day in cold and freezing snow of which W.P.I.A.L. champs. McKeesport, gave us our last defeat by the score of 38-0. Following the end of the season, the stalwart gridders turned to their annual football banquet at the Elks Temple where they were feted. There were many noted officials who participated in the celebration, which, finally, ended with the election of Paul Laudadio and Ray Hoffman as honorary co-captains. We, the students of J.II.S. want to thank the coaches, namely; Barnes. Rigney, Amann. and Mr. Stroud, the faculty manager for their fine piece of work in coaching and training the boys, scouting teams and handling the financial affairs of the athletic department. SEVENTY-TWO VARSITY BASKETBALL SEASON Having lost many experienced players from the past season, the Jeannette High Basketeers came through thus season with a fair record of which we must give credit to Pat” Rigney who succeeded Markley Barnes, as coach of the Jayvees last season. The season has not equalled those of the past, but the Red and Blue quintet tasted both the nectar of victory and the dregs of defeat during their basketball season. The spectators witnessed many exciting and thrilling games with our boys fighting until the final gun. Although the J. H. S. quintet did not win the county championship this season, the team at all times exhibited its gameness and the local five battled against oppressing odds at each contest. The staff extends the best of luck to our new Coach, Pat” Rigney, and his basketeers in their future encounters. TRACK TEAM This year’s track has improved over the Red and Blue teams of the past with the keen coaching of Markley Barnes. We have as seniors on the team, Robert Davis who holds the half mile record for the state, Richard Shirley, William McConnell, James Cavalier, John Naponic, and Matthew Hohn. As juniors we have John Leonard, Roger Abraham, Walter Federonka, William Oleszwski, Edward Hoh-man, George Gagliardi, Jacob Abraham, and William Baughman. Elmer Guy, a sophomore, is showing up very well. Robert Davis, and William Oleszwski are carrying off many top honors for the Red and Blue with a good Mile Relay team consisting of Federonka, Hohn, Guy, Davis, R. Abraham and Oleszwski. With six seniors and eight juniors and about ten sophomores and freshmen the team of 39” has been a very successful one. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity Basketball squad, coached by James McLean, who succeeded Coach Pat” Rigney has finished another basketball season. Trained by Red” McLean, the boys came through with a successful season. We owe a great amount of credit to Mr. McLean for their success. The Staff extends the best of luck to Mr. MCLean and the boys in their future encounters. SEVENTY-THREE IN THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE MEMBERS Top Row: Paul Stiffey. Bottom Row: Alex Lapina, Clifford Storey, Gerald Smith, James Erikson. The Student Council is the governing body of our school. One of the outstanding things accomplished by our Student Council this year was securing a Public Address System, which our high school needed very badly. Besides governing the school, they have charge of the dances and securing assembly programs; in addition to this, they award a trophy to the club or home room which puts on the best assembly. There is no greater honor, than to be a member of the Student Council, supervised by Mr. Leinbach. A newcomer to our Service Organization in our school is the Printing Staff. This year Jeannette High School printed their own paper, which was published every two weeks, under a very able staff. These boys did a very fine job on My Hi News. We take our hats off to them. The Makeup and Stage Crews play an important part in our assembly programs. The Makeup Crew has the job of making the actors and actresses as much like the character they are portraying as possible, while the Stage Crew handles the setting and sound effects necessary. The gym monitors take the attendance and act as referees during the games. The library monitors see that the books are in order and easy to find. The office force takes care of the attendance and office calls. Much honor is given to the boy or girl who serves in one of these organizations. Seventeen other neighboring high schools were requested to participate and meet the representatives of the 33 colleges, trade and business schools that so whole-heartedly cooperated. A delightful program of entertainment preceded the period of conferences. Although the attendance was far below expectations, we plan to conduct College Night again next year with certain adaptations that will insure a larger attendance of seniors and their parents. COMMENCEMENT QUEEN A feature of the 45th Annual Commencement Dance to be held at the Oakford Park Pavilion on the evening of Picnic Day will be the crowning of the Senior Queen, Kathleen Guy. She will be accompanied by her Maids of Honor, Mary Raynak and Jane Shearer. These seniors were selected by their classmates and are thus especially honored. The crowning will be made by some outstanding individual and will take place early in the evening. It Is planned to make this a feature of the annual Commencement Dance. The committee in charge of arrangements is Eleanor Hamilton, Winogene Willis, Dan Mash, Don Roberts and Warren L. Stroud, of the Faculty. Music for the dancing will be provided by Frank Paterra and his Orchestra, featuring the sweet voice of Miss Jane Enis. This is the same orchestra that made such a fine impression at the Junior Prom in 1938. SPECIAL AWARDS The Bausch and Lomb Science Award this year goes to Henry Smollen. Henry was chosen as the recipient of this reward by the Science Teachers on the grounds of fulfilling the requirement of four years of science, and his general interest in science. One of his many activities was repairing and mounting the skeleton oT a full sized cat for the Science Department. The skeleton was placed upon a wooden mount. This is a fine tribute of the effort and patient work of a student scientist. Last spring two of our high school boys, John Bober and Paul Dan ton. were elected by the student body to be sent to the Keystone Boy’s Camp sponsored by the American Legion. This camp is situated at Indiantown Gap and its purpose is to better acquaint the boys with the Government of Pennsylvania. Each boy was elected to an office which was governed similar to our state government. This is another worthy project sponsored by the American Legion. The National Thespians in a national dramatic honor society founded for the purpose of creating a more active and intelligent interest in dramatics among the boys and girls of secondary schools. The society is purely educational in nature. Membership Is extended to all students who qualify and who are worthy of membership. Each high school unit of the society is called a “Thespian Troupe.” Each troupe Is assigned a charter number. Troupe 304 has been assigned to Jeannette High School. Thespians in Jeannette High School are; James Cassell. Robert Davis. Edwin Marsh. Betty Jane Morris, Paul Stiffey, and Joseph Tray. The Staff wishes to take this opportunity to thank George Evans, Lester Haines and Kathleen Guy for their fine work in managing our business affairs. SEVENTY-SEVEN OUR NEW CLUBS T Q_y HE Chef Club organized by Miss Duncan in September 1938, was open to all boys interested in food preparation and camp cooking. This club has been very successful this year. The Automobile Club was organized in November 1938 by Mr. Boettner for Seniors only, in order to acquaint them with traffic regulations and improvements in the motor car. We think this club is very much worth while. Also in September 1938 Mr. Black organized a Girls’ Mechanics Club. The object of this club was to familiarize the girls with the repairing and adjusting of different fixtures in the home. Miss Vater organized the Rembrandt Club in September 1938 for students who are interested and talented in various forms of art expression. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS If we have succeeded in our efforts to make this book what we wish it to be, it is due to the generous support which has been given it. Therefore, we, the staff of 1939 are very grateful. To the School Board for its interest in the publication of this book. To Mr. Maclay for his untiring efforts as our photographer. To Miss Wilda Hutchinson for her advice and assistance. To the Senior Class for its cooperation., To Mr. Knox of the Northern Engraving Company for his advice and ideas. To Mr. N. C. Griffith of the Jeannette Publishing Company for his excellent cooperation in printing our book. To all who have supported this book in any way whatsoever. SEVENTY-EIGHT m Year Book Staff of 1939 and its advisor Miss Wilda Hutchinson, wish to extend our grateful thanks and appreciation to all the merchants of Jeannette and Vicinity who helped make possible the success of our book. :«5 SEVENTY-NINE DOLLARS ARE DRIVE WHEELS YOUR HOME BANK Earning power drives the whole machinery of your life.
