BULLDOGS DOMINATE MID-SEASGN The high school Bulldogs football team had their best season since 1977: the highlight of which was a six game win streak. Excellent defensive play brought home four shutouts for the Bulldogs over the Commerce Tigers, Stillwell Indians. Gentry Pioneers and Locust Grove Pirates. These shutouts combined with overpowering offensive play to let Jay outscore their opponents 151 points to 76. Other coaches around the area said that the Bulldogs were the hardest hit- ting team in class 3A football. Injuries stepped in and plagued the of- fensive unit in the closing weeks to pre- vent them from making the trip to the playoffs even though they had a 6-4 record which was better than some other teams that made the trip. 5,3 W ff.. WRESTLERS BREAK g Reconns Jay's varsity wrestlers hit an all-time high this year when they completed the year ranked eighth in the state. Along the way to the teams top finish ever, the Bulldogs left their mark when they rewrote the school's history books by either breaking or tying over thirty ex- isting records. Among these was the most regional tournament placers. This was done by Ron Payton at 136 pounds, Brian Elder at 168 pounds, Todd Davis at 190 pounds, and heavyweight Tim Barnwell. Not only did these men place, but they were all in the finals. Barnwell set another school record this year when he placed in the state tourna- ment forthe third year in a row. This year he captured third while Davis took sec- ond to give Jay three straight state runners-up at 190 pounds. Overall, the Bulldogs took on much tougher competition this year by squaring off against top ranked teams from three states and all tive classifications. I 5' N 11889 T F JUNIOR HIGH 1 Jay's junior high wrestlers also had an exceptionally good eason this year placing in the top five in every team tourna- tent that they participated in. This included a fourth place finish in the sixteen team WRESTLING alina Tournament. ln this tournament, the Bulldogs were led O O y freshman Bill Bush who, after pinning all of his opponents t D 5 1 the first period, was voted the tournament's outstanding frestler. The first team also took on some of the toughest competi- on in the state at the Westville tournament where they falked off with a fifth place team finish. ln this tournament, te junior high was led by Jesse Hodge who not only easily ion his weight class but also won this tournament's utstanding wrestler award. Lady Bulldogs Finish Strong During the 1988-84 basketball season the Lady Bulldogs worked very hard setting out to achieve tneir goals. The Lady Bulldogs were a relatively young team with only two seniors, Patricia Corhshucker and Michelle Denny. Starting off the season the team traveled to the Mid-America Classic Tournament in Ada and placed seventh. They proceeded to the Jenks ln- vitational Tournament where they placed second after Collinsville. l-lere, they were defeated by only ten points. Going into the play-offs the Lady Bulldogs finished second in Districts and participated in Begionals. The Lady Bulldogs tied for first place in Con- ference. One of them, Michelle Den- ny, earned second place in the nation for most bases stolen in a season. Sophomore, Angie l-louck, and Freshman, Shannon Lane, shared the pitching chores for the Lady Bulldogs, and helped advance the team to Regional play by defeating the Salina Wildcats 13-7. A K vi BUILDING YEAR IN TRACK Jay's men's varsity track team set a new school record as they sent six in- dividuals to the state track meet. The running events for the Bulldogs were led by senior Randy Talley and Alex Chadwick during the state meet. Chad- wick was one of the only freshmen in the state to goto state. During the regular season, however, Jay was led by its relay teams which were made up of all underclassmen. Brian Elder led the field events with a first place finish at nearly every meet this year. Elder was the only bulldog to place at the state meet this year when he leaped to a fifth place finish in the pole vault. Elder was followed closely by Pat Hanley and Kenny Kemple in the pole vault and Bill Jones and Darren Buzzard in the discus. He's taught grades first through eighth but currently teaches fifth. Education is a process by which people acquire knowledge, skills, habits, values, and at- titudes to become a useful member of society. lt should also help him develop an appreciation of his cultural heritage and live a more satisfying life. That is the educa- tional philosophy of Mr. Harp. After retirement he plans to travel, farm, and be more involved with the church. Teaching second grade, language arts, health and coaching are just some of the jobs June Morrow has held. Her last year was spent teaching arts and crafts and serv- ing as assistant principal in middle school. She's spent twenty-nine of thirty-six years teaching at Jay, Mrs. Morrow wants to help students function in society better. There is good in everyone and l want to help them realize that and develop to that end using common sense she stated. Her future plans include taking better care of her family and traveling. To try to help the child attain his maximum ability in lear- ning is the philosophy of Audrey Harp. She's taught al elementary grades but now teaches fourth. Of her thirty years teaching twenty-eight have been spent at Jay. Secretary of the Delaware County Education Association, District Officer of Classroom Teacher's Organization an former President of the Jay Classroom Association ar some of Mrs. Harp's honors. She was also Teacher of th Year in 1979. Traveling, farming, and churchwork are als in her future plans. Ola Mae Landon first started teaching when she thirteen and instructed a Sunday school class. Her teaching career continued and she spent seventeen of forty-three years teaching at Jay. Her philosophy stresses the whole child being taught. She feels if they don't feel right about themselves they won't learn as well, Mrs. Landon was Teacher of the Year in 1983.
