ln Our Minds ond Memory Forever During the past year, we at lay High School have suffered a great loss. On August 25, 1987, our English teacher, Mr. Roger L. Furlong passed away due tola fatal heart attack. He died at the age of forty-seven. Mr. Furlong was born on july 15, 1940, at Eagle Lake, the son of William and Viola Furlong. There, he spent his childhood with his three brothers and six sisters. He graduated from Fort Kent High School. Afterwards, he attended the University of Maine at Orono and earned his degree as an English teacher. He began his teaching career here at lay High in 1971. His goal at IHS was to give his knowledge of English in a way that students could understand. Not only was Mr. Furlong an English teacher, he was also involved in other school areas. For many years, he taught drivers education during his summer vacation, giving up his free time to make the dream of a drivers license a reality. He also was the coordinator for the junior Prom and gave his advice on how to make it the best it could be. He also served as class advisor for our class during our years here. Mr. Furlong enjoyed fishing as recreation at Eagle Lake whenever pos- sible. He also read many books in his free time and put his literary skill to use in published articles. Another important part of Mr. Furlong's life was spending time with family members at Eagle Lake. One thing is for certain, and that is that we all will miss Mr. Furlong greatly. The loss was sudden, and it was surely a tragedy. But we all will have memories of Mr. Furlong to last a very long time.
