There will bring to mind the many classes and activities that made your high school years special. Looking through yearbooks of the past four years you will see the many changes that you have all under- gone. It will seem almost inconceivable that you could have looked like that as fresh- men. It is clear that we all change with the time whether we want to or not. What is important is not only how we deal with changes in our lives but with the circum- stances that surround them. It will be essential for all of you to be flexible enough to deal with an ever- changing world. The background you have received at lay High School will help you as you move on to work or college. Do not sell yourselves short for you are capable and qualified to compete with graduates from around the state and the country. It is cer- tainly a big world out there full of oppor- tunities and possibilities. You will be limited only by your own energies and aspirations. I believe as the following quote states: To my mind, the possible and the fu- ture are one. I believe that all that is possible is striving to come into beingg and all that can will be, if man helps. Andre Gide My very best to all of you. Bill Riley, Principal 2 Thonk You To Our Closs Advisors 'We, the closs of 1988, wish to express our grotitude to our closs odvisors. On August 25, 1987, our English teacher, Mr. Roger L. Furlong passed away due tola fatal heart attack. He died at the age of forty-seven. Mr. Furlong was born on july 15, 1940, at Eagle Lake, the son of William and Viola Furlong. There, he spent his childhood with his three brothers and six sisters. He graduated from Fort Kent High School. Afterwards, he attended the University of Maine at Orono and earned his degree as an English teacher. He began his teaching career here at lay High in 1971. His goal at IHS was to give his knowledge of English in a way that students could understand. Not only was Mr. Furlong an English teacher, he was also involved in other school areas. For many years, he taught drivers education during his summer vacation, giving up his free time to make the dream of a drivers license a reality. He also was the coordinator for the junior Prom and gave his advice on how to make it the best it could be. He also served as class advisor for our class during our years here. Mr. Furlong enjoyed fishing as recreation at Eagle Lake whenever pos- sible. He also read many books in his free time and put his literary skill to use in published articles. Another important part of Mr. Furlong's life was spending time with family members at Eagle Lake. One thing is for certain, and that is that we all will miss Mr. Furlong greatly. The loss was sudden, and it was surely a tragedy. But we all will have memories of Mr. Furlong to last a very long time. fam X lm CLASSES -I FRESHMEN nvrnqhuni 1ST Row - l to r - jennifer Purrington, April Raymond, Deb- bie Smith, Tina Richard, Rebecca Purrington, Tonia Pullen. 2ND Row - Kristen Turner, john Walp, Duane Trask, David Town- send, Raymond Pomerleau, Scott Read, Tracy Rose. 3RD Row - Eric Pomerleau, Scott Volterman, Kevin Riggs, Todd Yates, Donna Yeaton, Tina Sabins, 10 Rx N 1ST Row - I to r - Cure: Nadeau, Christina Lee, Charli Leavitt, Rosa Tennison, Shawl Leclair, Tanya Oldham, Mis' Moody. I woke up the first morning - or should I soy ofternoon since it wos olmost two o'cIock - with the feeling thot I wos going home in o couple of weeks. Well, I soon found out this wos for re-ol. I wos here to stoy - ot leost for o yeor. And this yeor will indeed be very voluoble for me, something I'II remember for the rest of my life. In the beginning I wos kind of lost , ond I wos seorching for similorities between Joy ond Drommen, my hometown in Norwoy, just to find thot olmost everything wos different, The Americon people ond their woy of living differs very much from whot I wos used to ond it didn't toke me long before I reolized thot didn't work. QI could probobly write o book on thot subject, so I'lI leove it with this for now.j Thus, I leorned thot the thing to do, wos to toke every situotion os it come ond try to moke the best of it, even though it wos hord sometimes. Port of my experience with Americon culture hos included the need to reject the woy thot l've been brought up, ond suddenly needing to occept the totol opposite. I knew thot I hod to wind up soying Yeoh, sure ond go olong with it, becouse I knew thot it wos supposed to be different. Friends. I don't know whot I'd do without them. I consider myself lucky the woy I wos welcomed by everybody, especiolly ot school. I'm fortunote to hove friends of oll oge groups, but the kids in Coty school ore Cproboblyj the ones l'II remember the most when I, fifteen yeors from now, look up in the yeorbook ond think bock on things we did. I'm reolly groteful for whot they did for me, letting me become their friend, toking me here ond there, introducing me to others etc. The school foculty hos been very nice too, helping me ond supporting meftogether with everyone elsej so I could hove o QFGOT yeor. I reolly opprecioted it! I guess this yeor in Joy hos been more thon whot I expected, but I know thot without the help from my friends I'd never be oble to monoge, oll olone in onother country, miles from home. I owe you oll o greot deol, ond I'II treosure this yeor for os long os I live. Thonks olotl A speciol thonds to the senior Closs of 1988, you're oll greot! We have tried to instill our creative juices onto eacfr page to make this a great book, We have worked, fought and struggled for this yearbook, then to celebrate our progress, we had a pizza party. We tried some new things this year: we cut down faculty, sports and activity pages and increased candids because to be a part of Jay High School excelling in activites is not a prerequisite. Fortunately, our staff worked well together and much was accomplished throughout the past months, For all of our dilligent efforts, it was well worth the long hours of work to gain the satisfaction of the finished product, our 1988 edition of Breezes. We are proud of our accomplishment and hope that you wil enjoy reminiscing with us our past years events and memorable moments.
