THF CLA VIS well what ey er he has to do He w1ll The troublesome tlmes wlll brlng out support h1s school IU eyery loyal way glvmg to lt a full measure of dey otlon MTE THE TRAMP T was a dark hot stormy afternoon and Cherry Gulch was sleepmg peace fullv ln the shadow of a large cloud All the afternoon the clouds had been gathermg and threaternng a storm Cherry Gulch so named from the large gulch and the cherry trees whmch grew on xts banks was a llttle mmmg town of about one hundred mhabxtants mostly men A rlver had once run through the gulch but had been dammed at the upper end 'md lc t ID only as fast as the mmes used t The dam had been bullt for elght or ten ye xrs and had become qultt mfirm and the mme-rs knew It On thls afternoon IU partlcular they were more alarmed than usual Whlle they were talkmg about the danger a figure was seen aw ay down the tra1l a mere movlng speck IH the dlstance untll the people saw It was a man When at last he reachod them and re coy ered h1s breath he was able to mswer QUGSIIOUS When asked to tell hls story he began ind told as follows Away back ln the early 60s mv father and mother started out for the West then only a wllderness and cleared a spot for thelr cabm Two years after that I came 1nto thls world and from that txme on mv l1fe has been nothlng but hardshlps I have lam out ln the ram and sleet many a mght wlth no shelter but the tree under whlchl lay Well tlme passed on and I turned my footsteps toward the east Whlle In hls nature elther good or bad yust as the IYOH IS proved at the furnace 'kk RARY the clty of Salem I became acquamted wlth a charmmg voung woman whom m after years I made my wlfe We had one daughter and my frlends she was a true daughter to us She was the prlde of the vlllage and many a young man sought her hand but among them she dld not seem to show much favor But at length there came a young man from a nelghborlng vxllage and Nell seemed to fall directly ln love wlth hlm When at last they asked my consent to then marrlage I gave It In a short tlme they left Salem and came out th1s way We used to get letters from Nell frequently but they grew less frequent and then stopped altogether Years went by and we heard no more from them I advertlsed ln every paper I knew of for them but to no avall collapsed from a severe nervous stram and never rallled I stayed ln the vlllage '1 short tlme after her burml but tht spot seemed to h lunt me and 1 voice seemed to call to me to go West and here I am a wmderer on the flee of God s earth a tr imp Whlle he had been telllng hls tale a miner whom the boys called Salem loc and hxs Wlfe had listened attent lvely At the end they arose and w alked over to where he was slttmg Falllng upon hxs neck and weepmg the Woman sobbed out her story Whlle Joe overcome wlth emotlon sank down bCSldL them She told hlm how after she had left hum they hid eome out west how they 12 ' J .'
