' , .- CLASS HISTQRY In September 1936 we began our first year in jasper Public School Our first grade teacher was Miss MacDonald whom we thank for helping us through our most difficult year Of our original first grade there are six remaining namely Beverly Patterson Milton Seeman Beth Burg Evelyn Niemann Velma Preuss and Betty DeBates Our second class was divided between two teachers Miss Reep and Miss Iverson Dick Sexton entered our class this year We kept Miss Reep for our third grade teacher The end of this year found many of us acquainted with the corners of the school room Miss Nelson taught us in the fourth grade The year was high lighted for us by helping the rest of the grades present the operetta The Early Bird Catches the Worm Donald Haraldson began school here this year Our fifth grade class was also divided between two teachers Miss Wyum and Miss Klinger This year we starred in the presentation of another operetta Autumn Gold We were actually beginning to show our remarkable talents on stage We finally passed to the sixth grade and began looking forward to moving upstairs Our teacher was Miss Westensee who guided us through our las year of grade school This year our class helped present a third operetta Hansel and Gretel which starred many of our class Milton Seeman played the part of Hansel High School at last' We seventh graders found ourselves losing our way around the halls and getting used to having so many teachers Lockers were also new to us and we had so much difficulty with them until the upper classmen taught us to plug them But finally we settled down to a year of hard work The next year found us in the eighth grade and participating in many more school affairs In September 1944 about fifty Green Freshmen entered the building to eniors we found our place as Freshies We gave several parties during the course of the year including the Freshman Return Party and a party for the sophomores As sophomores we were honored to serve at the Junior Senior banquet given in the spring This year was high lighted by Eddie Schneider representing J H S at the state declam contest Our Junior year proved to be one of the most exciting and eventful ones of our high school years We had everal parties during the course of the year and best of all made all the arrangements for the junior Senior Banquet and Prom For most of us this was our first Prom so we looked forward to it with great anxiety Most of the boys took part in football basketball and track with several playing on the first teams and doing a good job of it Declam also proved to be very successful with june Haraldson Betty Lou DeBates and Eddie Schneider entering the regional contest F1nal1y we all are Sen1ors Our year has been an eventful one and our class is proud to have taken part in so many activities along with the rest of the student body This year four boys represented our class on the first ten in basketball Two of these Dick Sexton and Milton Seeman were named on the All Sub District team june Betty Lou and Ed participated in the District speech contest Ed also entered the Regional contest and received a Superior rating music found many or us in instrumental and choral groups and participating in our last music contest We are especially proud of our successful Homecoming and our thanks to the juniors for the banquet and prom So now we are look1ng forward to graduation and the best wishes and success to all students future years in jasper High School from the Class of 48 If 9 I ' . . y . . Returning lettermen were nilbur Anderson, Bernard Megard, Don Haraldson, Milton Seeman, Tom Johnson, and Dick Sexton. This was Jasper's first year under their new coach, bars Overshei, and also their first year in in several years with a complete eleven man schedule. Difficulties were met in arranging a suitable schedule due to the late decision to abondon six man football. Results of the season were asffollowsz Jasper O Flandreau 21 O Pipestone 26 O Flandreau Indians 39 9 J Howard 19 32 Howard 'O O Garretson 6 7 Edgerton lb The Quartz-siters journeyed to Flandreau to made their l9h? debute. Jasper had lost their opener with a final score of 21-O. In the second game Jasper met the ripestone Arrows under the newly installed lights. The stronger Pipestone team handed Jasper their second defeat to the tune of 26-O. In the next game the nRocksn took a beating from the Flandreau Indians. The Howard Tigers came to Jasper for the Homecoming game, again defeat came to the wuartz-siters. Next Friday the Quartz-siters overwhelmingly defeated the Tigers in a return game. The last two games were the most exciting of the year with jasper being nosed out by a small margin. So endfd a year in which the Jasper eleven acquired much in the Jay of experience. TRACK In the spring of l9hY a large number of boys shoaed interest in track. A represfntive team entered the Dakota Relays at Sioux Balls, the District Track Meet at Pipestone, and the Regional Meet at Mankato. In the Dakota Relays, Jasper failed to place, but in the district meet they placed third, with vorthington and Pipestone ahead of them Dick Sexton took iirst in the hhO yard dash, Uonald Kdhlman gained iirst in the ZOO yard low hurdles, william hrickson se ond in the 880 run, Paul Hansen second in the mile, Paul Strobel fo rth in the hlO, the relay team took iourth in the 380 relay On May 22 Coach Lngen took four hovs to Mank to where they earned a total of four points Donald Kuhlman placed fourth in the low hurdles, Paul Hansen fourth in the mile, and Dick Sexton fifth in the LMO yard run S E Z QQTCQY 'i I . . . . . . The first iive consisted of R. 5exton and Seeman.as pivot men, Peterson Anderson, and Haraldson, guards. They played a ver3 eiiectlve double-post offense which could throw a scare into any opponent. Highlights of the season Here: Pipestone Arrows at Jasper when the Quartz siters defeated an age-old rival by two points lynd at Jasper when the ever-powerful lynd team edged out a victory by only one point. 'M 95751 E1 sf, Q, ABN? Jasper twice defeated Cathedral, runner up in the South Dakota state Catholic B. B. tourneyg once by 36 points. Jasper's Sl to 32 win over last year's district champion and regional runner up, Luverne, on Father's Night. In the first round of the Dub-district, Jasper was victor over Beaver Creek for the second time this year. In the championship game Jasper barely eked out a victory over Hills in an overtime period having defeated them by wide margins twice before. lhe final score was 37-35. lhree Jasper cagers made the All Sub-district team, R. Sexton, Peterson, and Seeman. The next aednesday the Jasper quintet met a strong xorthington team in the first round of the district tourney and were dealt a 32-M6 beating. The Quartz-siters ended a very successful season with 13 wins and Y losses. Congratulations go to Coacn Ovcrskei, the man who lead them through this victorious season and to the team who did its best to live up to his expectations. Before a crowded auditoruim, Barbara Detlerk, queen of 191111, crowned Carole Thielman Queen, and Verland Johnson, Fling of l9l,E, crowned dick Jecton Kin-' of l9L7-LS. Beth Jurg and Milton ofeman were attendents. The Hoyalty, chosen by student election, gave responses. After the ccronation, a pep fest was held around 1 huge bonfire at the athletic field. Pep talks given by the football players and coach Jere introduced by the checrleai rs. n snake dance was formed, which ended in another pep fest wown town. Frida: afternoon brought a colorful parade through gain Street. It included floats from th' various grades, classes, business places, and a moyalty float. Prizes were given for the best floats and windows decorated. At h:3O a tea was held in the home Economics room for the alumni. The Homecoming football game ended with the Howard Tigers victorious, defeating Jasper with a score of l9-9. The high light of the festivities was the Homecoming dance in tho gym.
