As you hear or sing for the fame of the gold and black, you'Il remember the re- cords we made in scholarship, music, sports, and extracurricular activities. Perhaps these records weren't of national importance, but to the 565 students who worked and learned at JHS, this past year was f h b f h ' I' one o t e est yearso t elr Ives. l.et's look at the written record, and if you like, why not play the Talking '.l. Student Life Scenes Throughout the Year Pictured on the next six pages is the JHS Hit Parade-as determined by your interest. Based on a year of activities rather than a week'S, this hit parade is difterent from the one we watch on Saturclay nights. It covers every field of interest: classwork, sports, iouralism, pep sessions, drama, clubs, honors, music, and contests. All of these typify life at our school. These top ten activities are not listed in the order of their importance, but as they occurred during the school year. Some take place during school hours, some are extracurricular, and others are scheduled for after school. Together, they represent a record-breaking number of hours of planning and service. W UM. r We came to school lor readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmeticf' and, of course, the more advanced subiects, like lit, govern- ment, and trig. lt's a known fact that sometimes we daydreamed about the game that night, whom we were going to the dance with, or which dress Joe likes best on me. Wlwen we came back to real- ity, we firmly reminded ourselves that schoolwork is all-important, and buckled down to hard work and concentration! i . I J . gf ! Desks, chairs, blaclcboards- all are meaningless unless we have someone to help us find and use every opportunity for l ing. Friendly and smiling, teachers are constantly helping us to improve our own per! alities by showing their faith and confidence in this younger generation. Probably in no other career must a person have so many aoilities. A teacher must be the master of certain sub- iects, he must be able to direct the learning of groups of students, and he must like to work with others. Bringing education to a faculty-student basis, JHS teachers serve as class and club advisers, dance chaperons, contest judges, a guiding influence. . . A! Mr. Bernard Gallagher, Superintendent of Jasper City Schools, ex- amines the plans for the new Jasper Public Schools now under con- struction. OUR ADMINISTRATION They Set Policy for School Managing the affairs of Jasper High School is the duty of Principal Claude Miller and his faculty of twenty-three, Mr. Bernard Gallagher, the Superinten- dent of City Schools, and the three-member School Board, composed of Mr. Claude Gramelspacher, Mr. O. Leo Beckman, and Mr. Casper Elliott. They must all work together for the benefit of the student and the betterment of the school. It is the responsibility of these people to see that there is a direct faculty-student relationship. Mr. Miller keeps a complete record of each student, conducts teachers' meetings, and supervises student organizations and activities. He and other members of the faculty also sponsor many extracurricular student functions. Mr. Gallagher and the School Board have many ad- ministrative oftices to attend. They select teachers, approve all school expenditures, provide all the nec- essary equipment forthe school, and compile an annual budget and financial report. Last year the board pur- chased property for a new elementary school. Construc- tion on the new building in the southwest part of Jasper is now well under way, lt has been estimated that the school will be ready for use by next fall. At Jasper High School a club is considered a group which meets during the ECA per- iod every Thursday, an organization has its meetings after school, or it may be a regular class such as band or glee club. With a To Each His Own policy,, JHS students find that almost without exception there is a club to suit everyone's special interests. Through- out the school year we engage in a variety of club activities: planning elections, discussing basketball strategy, selling ads, giving plays, writing articles of wistorical interest, presenting musical programs, play- ng volleyball or maybe even chess. . . All members of the department have promoted good co-operation through the media of vocal music. The vocal department presented much entertainment for the fac- ulty and student body at the annual Christmas program and at the Democracy Contest. They also entertained members of the K of C, Kiwanis Club, and D of l. The smaller groups in this department brought many awards back to Jasper after they attended the Dis- trict Solo and Ensemble Contest at Evansville. The departments biggest project was the presentation at Victor Herbert's Babes In Toyland. Over 140 students co-operated in making this project a great success. Miss Ruth Utz, assisted by Carol Graehler, directed the production. The Glee Clubs and Madrigal Singers are sponsored by Miss Utx, while the Boys' Chorus and the Barbershop Quartet are under the direction of Mr. Walter Stutl. They carried out their theme by recording the top activities at JHS in the book and on record, Other new features were double division pages, inclusion of clubs in the index, and more student life pictures. Most of the staffs work was done after school, and many nights they could be seen wearily leaving the build- ing at 6:30 P.M. This defeat cost the Cats the confer- ence championship, but they came back strong in the hnal game to smother Bicknell by a lopsided 34-7 score. New head coach Tom Stokes installed a single wing attack that consistantly sprang speedy halfbacks Joe Rohleder and Jim Lehmkuhler loose for long gains, The highlight of the season was the Cats' I9-8 victory over archrival Huntingburg. It was the Wild- cats' hrst football victory over the Hunters. The Cats had failed to score in two previous meetings. A 65-yard drive the Hrst time they had the ball put the Wildcats in the lead when Lehmkuhler carried the last three yards around left end. Lehmkuhler also scored the second touchdown a a beautiful 53 yard run going off tackle and cutting back through the Huntingburg secondary for the score. Joe Rohleder scored the other touchdown on a two-yard run off tackle climaxing a 70-yard march. Both long drives were sparked by the hard running of senior fullback Jody Giesler. The B-Squad boys outscored their ri- vals by the lopsided total at T02 to 20 points. Starting most of the games tor the B-Squad were ends Bob Detray and John Sheffield, tackles Tom Thomas and Nelson Tredvvay, guards Maurice Eck- erle and Dick Kabrick, center Kenny Fleck, quarterback Phil l-lubbuch, and haltbacks Denny Otto and Danny Fried- man. Other players seeing considerable action for the B-Squad were Knust, Carnes, Kunz, Patterson, Mehringer, Nordhaft, Betz, and Gramelspacher. Playing a limited schedule of only three games, the inexperienced freshmen gridders were outclassed by their heav- ier and more experienced opponents and failed to past a victorv for the season. BASEBALL TEAM Cats Eye Conference Crown With a large group of players returning from last year's excellent team to build on, Coach Wes Settle hopes to turn out a cham- pionship contender this year if his pitching staff holds up. The Wildcats will be able to field a team that has experience in almost all the positions. The pitching staff, headed by senior Jody Giesler, will be the key to a winning season. Led by their slugging catcher, Bill Bohnert, the Wildcats should have plenty of power at the plate. Again this year the Wildcats will face a tough conference schedule after warming up with some non-conference games. Barring cancellations due to bad weather, the Cats will play a full fifteen game schedule again this year. Although the track team has many ing lettermen, the lack of team balance hurt the Wildcat cindermen this year. 84 Wuchner will have a tough job in finding rial to fill the weak spots in an squad that lacks over-all balance as ual stars. The atmosphere and tradition have remained the same, but there have been - many other changes. In 1949, when this picture of Jasper was taken, the new addition had not yet been constructed, and the enrollment was smaller than it is today. I wonder how JHS will look five years from now, in 1962. At that time all of you will be alumni of JHS, but l'll still be with you, ready to help you relive your high school days. Once again you'll be able to see and hear yourself reciting in class, rooting for the Wildcats, and speaking for democracy. As time goes on, you'll always cherish these memories of your '57 year at JHS.
