No dictator fell here in JHS, and nobody found a cure for polio, but we, her 520 students, did spend nine very important months of our lives here. This is the story of those nine months, We will re-create atypical day in the life ot our school, from early morning to late, late at night, As we re-live this day we will meet again our friends ot the past year, our sports and organizations, and our advertisers. Oh, by the vvay, anybody else that's interested is welcome to tag along. I lcnovv you'll like our school. We do, 7 ff ..,,.W,.fsm. Some of us live on farms and have to get up very early to catch a bus. A very few of us live right across the street from school and can get up ten minutes before the tarcly buzzer and still make it. However, most of us live several blocks from school, and after hurriedly grabb- ing some breakfast, we rush to meet the gang we walk to school with. But before that, we wait on the corner for the inevitable slow- poke. Y - . P- '- L 'U-,. tx.. A' S KETTN5 xx. ,dsx -Jw.-. .Y 4 3. K: '- K. i X X Some ot us drive to school in the mornings. You will find us driving ol- most onything, so long os it runs. There is John's new '56 Plymouth, Tony's oncient '31 Chevie, ond Susie's cute little Jeepster. Those of us who con't drive yet live for thot doy when we become sixteen ond ore oble to get thot volu- oble piece of pciper, our driver's li- cense. We sove ourselves o lot of wolking but not much time by driving. By the time we pile everyone in, it would hove been foster to wolk, but then thot wouldn't hove been holt os much fun. A TYPICAL SCHOOL DAY On These Pages Are Typical JHS Student Life Scenes This is o picture story of o typicol, moybe slightly overcrowded doy in the lite of ci typicdl student of .losper High School, trom eorly morning to lote, lote gt night. We hope thcit twenty years from now we con point with pride to our '56 J ond soy to our high school-oge children, This is whot it wos like when I was in high school. Boy, those were the doysl We hope this section ond the cinnuol will bring bock mony fond memories. We olso, by meons of this school lite section, hope to give pcirents, friends, or even totol strongers o glimpse into our lite. We wont to shore with you our youth. So, it you're reody, whoever you ore, let's go! I.. f .INX i 1 ,f I J fs nf ,of Dig those crazy fads for 256. Far the fellas it's V-neck sweaters, Levis, or flannels. The girls sport fling-around scarves, short Coats, outsize purses, and bobby socks, or Italian blouses, straight skirts, and hose and flats. In the morning all the girls head for the nearest mirror to primp. Here's our chance to sneak a peek at the hair styles of '56. Some of our gals still cling tothe very long styles, others favor the medium length, and the rest cut it all oFl. An integral part of the eight o'clock scene in JHS are the locker lovers. You can find them in any hall, holding up the wall, completely engrossed in each other and entirely oblivious of everything around them. True Love's A Many Splendored Thing. Most of us make it to our first period class with time to spare, Some of us iust beat the buzzer and collapse thankfully into our seats, hutting and putting. But it seems that an unlucky few never quite make it. Mr, Miller, here l come. The interruptions settled, the teacher sur- veys his class. First he sees the sleepy-head. He stays up late studying. Next he sees the backrow gossips. Never get talked out. Then there is the eager-beaver. She knows the an- swer. Which one are you? Homeroom period follows. Usually after the bulletin has been read we begin chatting with our neighbors. But one day a month not a sound is heard during the whole home- room period. You guessed it! Comets have been sold again! As everyone says, Boys will be boys. But sometimes when boys are too like boys, they end up waiting nervously outside Mr, Mil- ler's office where they have been unexpectedly called for a little conference. Usually the offense is minor, but it still requires that fearful trip to the office where Mr. Miller waits behind that forebod- ing closed door. No matter how many times you have been there before, when you are told to go to the office with out being given any reason, you shiver slightly in your boots. Perhaps the most typical scene in a day in the life of our school is the hall between classes. And certainly the most characteristic feature of this scene is the line at the water fountain. The water foun- tain is always rushed, no matter what the season. There is always the fellow who tries to cut in ahead of the line, the girl who tries to break through the line in her hurry to get to her next class, and all the others who flock around the water fountain to make plans, get assignments, or pass on gossip. yy. fe x - , ,.,' V, V 4, ft gf- . . It is known as a report card-a small, white, rect- angular piece ot cardboard upon which our grades are recorded. lt doesn't sound very valuable, does it? Oh, but it is, especially to those few of us who are not burdened with the task of carrying it home. This is a very considerate act on the part of the administration, al- though the parents of these few don't usually see it this way. So ends our day. We hope you enioyed it. After such a iam-packed, tull- to-the-top, running-over day you would think that we were ready to collapse in bed, never to move another muscle. But not us, the conscientious students at Jasper High School! We have our ever- lovin' homework to do! No matter what the hour the Comp theme or the government assignment has to be done tonight. It's due tomorrow. The semester reviewing can't wait because the test is tomorrow. Eye- lids droop, Hngers grow stift, backs ache, and brains grow dull, but we forge forever forward, onward and upward to our goal, that nice soft bed. OUR ABLE LEADERS THEY WORKED HARD TO IMPROVE OUR SCHOOL The affairs of Jasper High School are administered very capably by Principal Claude Miller and his faculty of twenty-three, Mr. Bernard Gallagher, the Superin- tendent of City Schools, and the three-member School Board, composed of Mr. Claude Gramelspacher, Mr. Casper Elliott, and Mr. O. Leo Beckman. All these agencies work together for the benefit of the student. The faculty makes the direct contact with the student, It is their responsibility to teach. Mr. Miller, as princi- pal, is responsible for teacher's meetings, keeps records, develops and directs student organizations, and gets everyone's schedule organized. He must also supervise extra-classroom programs and take care of the place- ment, transfer, and administration problems of the students. The Superintendent ot Schools is an administrative otticer and, as such, Mr. Gallagher carries out the recornendations of the School Board. The board selects teachers, receives all receipts, approves all expend- itures, prepares an annual report and budget, and provides all articles necessary for the efficient man- agement ot the school. This year the School Board purchased ground for the erection of a new elementary school building in the southwest part ot Jasper. Tempor- ary plans for the building have been made. It meets every day during the third ' period. Last September the band won sixth place , f, F at the state fair. At the Marching Contest in October they won a first, making a perfect 3 7' score. They also entered the Playing Contest g it.- ' A - in April and gave a Spring Concert. The band performed at four football games and five basketball games, played for all the pep sessions, and made many civic appearances. Last year the band won first place at the state fair and as a result was invited to the Cherry Blossom Festival at Washington, D, C. But because this event took place in April it was impossible to cover it in last year's J, so we include it here now. At the Festival the band won three trophies. They received a first in playing, a PM second in marching, and a third in the pa- rade. For their feats they were included in the First Chair of America, the yearbook of the top high school bands in the nation. l Mr. Tom Bishop is the director. Writing articles on the history of JHS basketball teams tor each ot the basketball programs was their main activity. The Historians entered a float in the pep rally parade, a picture ot which appears on this page and also on page Ql. By selling ribbon during the holiday season, they financed a trip to a point ot historical interest this spring. The His- torians also had a special program for each meeting. Two members volunteered to give a program on the history ot Dubois County at each meeting. The club members also decorated their clubroom for Christmas. Mr. John Fierst is the adviser ot the Historians. 86 CAMERA CLUB The Jasper High School Camera Club, with fifty members, is one of the larger clubs and one of the busiest. The Camera Club meets in Room 39 weekly during the club period, but most of their work is done outside of this period. Some members work during their study periods, and much of the work is done after school and at night. The purpose of the Camera Club is to train students in photography so that they may furnish pictures forthe Comet and J, which is their main activity for the year. Student pho- tographers took almost all of the pictures in this annual. This club also sells pictures to individuals. The Camera Club, organized in 1938, is the oldest club in JHS. From 1938 to 1942 it was very active and successful. However, forthe next eight years the club was inactive because of difliculty in obtaining supplies during the war and because of a lack of space. When in 1950 the club purchased its press camera, it began working again and has been quite busy ever since. Mr. Victor Nixon sponsors the Camera Club. CATS' RECORD 1-1-5 Gridders Finish Strong At Bicknell The Jasper Wildcats opened their third season of football by playing a i3-i3 tie with a strong Mitchell team and closed the season on a happy note by wallop- ing the Bicknell Bulldogs 39-6. Playing a rugged seven game schedule, which in- cluded six conference games, the Wildcats, who are in only their third year of football after an interval of forty years, shovved the opposition and the fans that they were no easy marks. Their l-l-5 season record doesn't show the true picture of this tearn's accomplishments. Center Dick Persohn lays one up as Jasper Hordes of iubilant, shouting fans swarm over the floor to congratulate the happy, but scores its third victory of the season over Hun- tired, Wildcats after they won the sectional by edging out Winslow in an overtime tingburg. ...ti ... TRACK TEAM JHS Track Team Will Miss Stars Lost By Graduation The JHS track team was weakened considerably by the loss through graduation of John Ackerman and Ken Ackerman, the two leading point getters from last year's team. These two boys competing in both the running events and the field events contributed most of the points to Jaspers' total in all of the meets. John Ackerman broke the school record in both hurdles events and Hnished second in the state meet in the high hurdles. This year's team will consist mostly of underclassmen and will lack experience. Returning veterans who showed promise last year are Fred Brames, Mike Witte, and John Hoffman. 12 -. Baseball Team Faces Tough Fifteen Game Schedule Last year's veteran baseball team played an eleven game schedule and came out on top ten times, losing only to a strong Bloomington team. This excellent record was spoiled when the Wildcats were forced to for- feit four games in which an ineligible player participated. This spring three new opponents, New Albany, Vincennes Central Catholic, and Shoals, have been added to complete a fifteen game schedule. This year's team will be built around the following players who gained considerable experience with last year's team: Alvin Brenner, Bill Dupps, Don Kress, Mike Witte, Jody Giesler, Willie Haas, Bob Seng, and Bill Bohnert.
