5fie Of ’60 Published By he Senior Class Jaspe’r High School Route 2, New Bern, N. C. 3 ovc word We, of the '60 yearbook staff, have worked steadily for many months to produce this volume of the J-HI-NIKE. Within these pages we have tried to record the many memorable events that have happened to us during our journey through high school. Music—popular, classical, and sacred—has played such an important role in our progress that we have used many of our favorite melodies as illustrations in this volume. We hope that, not only at the present but in the years to come, this book will' be a treasured keepsake and that it will recall many happy occasions. Only a few teachers can we students honestly designate as exceptional teachers. They gain this distinction by qualifications of fairness, friendliness, sympathy, genuine concern for students, For devotion to their profession beyond its actual demands, a disinclination to shirk responsibility, a thorough grasp of subject matter and an inter- esting and vital manner of presenting it, a way of making us as students realize the importance of learning. For being truly professional minded and student minded. These are the teachers who demand both respect and love. One teacher whom the Senior Class believes to possess these qualities in the highest degree is a person we consider anA+ teacher and an A+ human being. With gratitude and affection we, the Senior Class of 1960, dedicate our year- book to our homeroom teacher, MRS. COLVIN JOYNER. The reality of it dawns on us and along with a feeling of joy and thankfulness, we experience a feeling of regret. Then before we know it, our thoughts begin to wander back over the years. We remember our first year of High School and the headaches Algebra classes brought. With Mr. Harris as our homeroom teacher, we finally survived the title of green Freshmen. During this year we lost two members of our class, Rose Marie Boodle and Joel Gardner. As Sophomores we enjoyed a trip to Raleigh. Our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Mcllwean, and her husband chaperoned a beach trip to Morehead during the spring. Faye Register and Donald Humphery left us this year. As Juniors we took on the responsibility and hard work of giving a Junior-Senior Banquet which was held in the school gym. Itwas difficult but we finally came up with a good banquet and prom. With Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Carawon as chaperones, we enjoyed a beach trip to Morehead in May. We added two new members to our class during this year, Penny Daly and Jane Cummings and also lost two members, Howard Wood and Bobby Nobles. As Seniors we visited the campus of East Carolina College with Mr. Tyndall as chaperone. Having completed our yearbook, we are eagerly awaiting a trip to Washington, D. C. in March, Junior-Senior Banquet in May and finally to the big day— Graduation. It has been a long road with many smiles and a few tears, but it has been one that will always bring pleasant memories to us. To everyone who helped us and patiently watched our progress—Thank You. May we live up to your expectations and our own dreams. MARY ALICE KOONCE Historian 34 Ub Slowly Paddle Your Own Canoe ■hfl f -f- M. In my vision it was the year 1970. My husband and I had just returned home after a long stay in Europe where we had been stationed for the past seven years. I stopped inside a cafe for a bite to eat and 1 heard a familiar voice saying, Two hamburgers and a cup of coffee coming up. 1 turned to see who was speaking and to my surprise it was none other than NYOKA DAVIS, now Mrs. John D. Grimes. It was apparent that John and she had decided that children were cheaper by the dozen. She soon had me informed on all the latest gossip. BRENDA REGISTER, LOIS ATKINSON, and CLEM DAUGHERTY were in New York trying out their talents. Clem has taken over the leading role in Pete Kelly's Blues ; Lois has her great painting of Whistlers Father displayed in the New York Museum of Art; and Brenda is soloist in the Metropolitan Opera Company. As I sat there, HARVEY TRIPP came in. He said that he and HURLEY VINCENT were opening a drag strip lor all speedsters. He also said that RAY HERRING had finally achieved his ambition as mortician at Pollock Funeral Home, a place I like to be away from. He was quite surprised that 1 didn't know that PAT DAUGHERTY had astounded the scientific world by announcing that he has perfected a sure cure for broken hearts. After chatting with those old cronies, I decided to go down to the drug store. When I reached the comer, I found a crowd of people gathered to see the talent show which was in production. Lo and Be- hold! whom should I see but ALTON DALY singing I Won’t Go A Hunting With You Jake, But I'll Go Chasing Women. Across the street from the talent show I saw a sign which read Hodnett's Barber Shop, the best hair cuts in town if you can wait. I went in to see none other than RONNY HODNETT,the barber. MEREDITH CUMBO was there to pick up her little Dennis the Menace. She gave me the low-down on some more of my classmates. RODNEY SUTTON is still the play boy around town and all the girls are still swooning—whether over him or the swanky convertible he struts around in, no one knows. BERT DAVIS has finally succeeded in becoming Governor of Texas. JoANN HOYLE has been his secretary for five years and thought she'd run for governor herself next term. RAYMOND ADAMS was in the real estate business but he never had any estate to sell. MARY FRANCES HILL is now married to Bobby Edwards and they live in the biggest house in town, requiring a pass of all who enter therein. ANNETTE MOORE and MARY ALICE KOONCE are also happily married and are employed in their husband's businesses. RITA HARRIS has just gotten married and is teaching school so that she can support her husband. Last but not least, ROBERT ADAMS has taken over the job as basketball coach at Jasper High School. As I continued to sit by the fire, I realized my vision was clearing and everything seemed real again, but it was wonderful taking a trip into the land of tomorrow.
