Cuomo has announced that Jasper Central School is one of three schools in New York State to win the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. The other schools are Putnam Central School in Putnam Station, and JHS 216 Q in Flushing, N.Y. The Presidential Physical Fitness Award was established in 1958 and designed to motivate students ages 10-17 to develop and maintain a high level of physical fitness. Participants are tested in six categories: sprint, endurance, run, agility run, standing long jump, sit- ups, and arm and shoulder strength tests. A total of 43 Jasper students were presented fitness emblems and cer- tificates in recognition of their ac- complishments. In a congratulatory letter to Jasper School, George Allen, chair- man of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, 'noted that the school qualified a higher percentage of students for the Fitness Award than any other school of similar enrollment in New York State. Physical education teachers Robert Cleeves and Sandra Cutter noted that a physical fitness pro- gram is begun in first grade at Jasper School, with the American Amateur Union Program used for grades one through four. Fifteen percent of students enroll- ed at Jasper in grades 5 through 12 received the award. They were: Gwenna Button, Laura Hayes, Keron Anderson, Monique Norman, Melissa Drake, Lanita Kent, Stephanie Button, Ann Fuller, Amy Gates, Yvonne Hunt, Jeanne Drake, Kristie Meilutis, Jennifer Brotzman, Rhonda Price, Pam Savey, Stephanie Foster and Kelly McCaig. Also, Stacie Friends, Marita Price, Shelia Savey, Phil Adams, Joe Bouton, Chris Friends, Lance Zaleski, Troy Terry, Benny McCaig, Jeff Hunt, Stacy Jackson, Robert Lubberts, Craig Pero, Ken Stanford, Bill Bouton, Jonas Cox, Tim Guild, Kyle Flint, Tom Price, Darrin Van0rsdale, Tom Woodard, Jeff Drake, Joe Farrand, Scott Friends, Mark Davis and Hank Williams.
