For the already educated to give their knowledge to those who must face the future is the goal of their intentions. PAGE 1 ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF G FACULTY Never . . . was so much owed by so many to so few. -- W. Churchill. When a person chooses the teaching profession, he realizes his duties to his students. For what he will give will help mold the future. PAGE 5 SEN IORS At the crest of the hill, I shall hail the new summits to climb. -- Bernard Trotter. As seniors we have reached the crest of the hill, but the summits ahead are also difficult. The future of our generation in the seventies must undertake such summits as peace, understanding and equality. To reach these is a difficult path. PAGE 13 UNDERCLASSMEN The aim of education is to enable man to continue his learning. -- Unknown. Although it often appears hopeless and unending, the end result is invaluable. AS underclassmen you face the challenge and the choice is yours to decide. PAGE 31 ELEMENTARY There is only one child in the world and the child's name is all children. -- Carl Sandburg. As young people start on a long journey towards fulfillment of a dream, they face many facets of educaiiong the successes and the failures. PAGE 39 ACTIVITIES Man's actions are the picture book of his creeds. -- R. Emerson. When students enter into the organization either enjoyable or learning, they have the opportunity to express their individual ideas and blend them with others. PAGE 53 MUSIC And the silence for which music alone finds the word. -- E. Masters. Harmony can be achieved many ways, but one is the ex- pression of music either individual or together with others. Nothing can be audibly spoken, but the feeling can be commtmicated. PAGE 63 ATHLETICS It matters not that we won or lost, but how we played the game. -- Grantland Rice. The true Spirit of competition comes through the hard work and bad breaks. The playing of the game is a step often retraced in life. PAGE 71 2 DEDICATIO sine' '16-as if With this deication goes deepest gratitude and admiration to a teacher, who in his quiet way has showed us right from wrong and to have faith and confidence in ourselves above anything else. His constant advice and understanding has helped us to attain the very best of school and to prepare us, not only in science, but for the life outside. At this time, we would like to honor this man who can always face each day with a warm smile and an optimistic viewpoint on life. With sincere appreciation and due respect, we dedicate the 1970 Edition of Golden Glimpses to Mr. Howard Van Scoter. 3 Ruth Dennis Homer Morton JASPER CENTRAL SCHOOL JASPER, NEW YORK George L. Johnson IUPIIVIIINC YIINCIFAL Dear Members of the Class of l97O: I am pleased to have the opportunity of having a part in your yearbook. You have a theme which is appropriate and challenging: Ulf you have knowledge, let others light their candle at itu. It is a reflection of the idealism and a call to service that motivates many, especially the young. You graduate from high school in times that are changing and challenging. We believe that the great challenge facing your generation is to choose the best and finest ideals of the past and to build upon them construc- tively so that in time we can make into reality, what we say we believe. We believe that in dedicating a part of your time and lives to the service of others you will bring lasting satisfaction to yourselves. We hope you have enjoyed your years at Jasper Central School and that they have given you experience and knowledge to serve you as you go on to new fields. Cur sincere best wishes go with you. Sincl ely yours. 9 JCR, N. Lf'-ffm-x.2 George, . Joh on Princi al 4 3 N.,,.-.LM ,, H L N 31 -f'rf.f2,-1-X HJ Iwaiii-5!x ,.T4rAsf za ! ,, , ,,,gV,sxfw,,x,40 1 1 . When school began in September, the administration and students welcomed five new teachers james Henderson, Candace Taft, Arlouene VanHorn, Esther Ritter, and Harry Andre to the school. Their addition has been enjoyed by all. Remodeling and classroom improvements have been made in the high school this year. New laboratory equipment was added to the science department and the library received a welcome refinishing. Parent-Teacher conferences were again held to provide an opportunity for teachers and parents to discuss students' progress. Scholastically the Class of 1970 was pleased to have a Letter of Commendation awarded to David Cole for his performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualify- ing Test. Also jasper Central was proud to have four seniors awarded State Regents Scholarships: David Cole, Dale johnson, Belva O'Dell, and William VanSkiver. Two alternate positions were awarded to Sue Cornell and Donald Perham. This certainly was a wonderful accomplishment for the students, their parents and the school. The year of 1969 and 1970 has been a year of great change and improvement in the world and the scholastic and individual achievements made this year at jasper Central School are a small, but important part of it. 10 BUS DRIVER T FRONT ROW: G. To cure them of their foolish ideas, their daughters Helen and Deborah with the help of inventive Uncle Phineas, use the ghost of Great Caesar to make the action begin. The disappearing act, the moving objects, and the loud, mysterious knocking all help to keep the chills tingling and laughter ringing. Under anew president with new ideas this year's council has begun to be an important part of school life. The student government organized and scheduled school activities for the school year for its first project. It then tackled the problem of revising the warning system to still meet with the guidelines of the administration. After much discussion the revisions were sub- mitted to the Faculty Council, where it received approval. Also for the first time in many years, the council established a school newspaper which has been a big success with the students. The Council plans to hold a circus in the future to finance our school assemblies. Above all, the 1970 President and Student Council strengthened the student government at jasper Central School and represented the opinions of the student body. Other officers are Vice President, Bill Van- Skiverg Secretary, Kaia Andrewsg and Treasurer, Terri Payne . 54 E IOR HO OR SOCIETY x li Ir The 1970 Honor Society under the leadership of this year's president, Dale Johnson has tried to continue its good of scholarship, good character, service, and leadership. Using all of these, the group plans the annual benefit basketball game and other ac- tivities for the school and community. Under the guidance of our advisors Ivlr. Nosky and Mr. VanScoter, the Honor Society upholds the qualities of its foundation. JU IOR HO OR SOCIETY 55 FRENCH CLUB ,, .--f-f , rag f 5 . All over the world there is a communication gap. Members of the French Club feel they can overcome some of this gap by being able to express themselves in another language. Under the leadership of Mrs. Hopkins, the French Club has set up a foreign exchange program. Through this program, our school has better understood the customs and language of other nations. Tachi's full name is Isabel Murayama and al- though she and her 3 brothers and 3 sisters were born in Peru, she is of japanese descent. l-ler father came from japan to Peru when he was 31 years old. Mr. Murayama now has a store in Lima, Peru, though at one time he ran an academy of judo. Tachi graduated from her all-girl school in Peru on December 26. She wants to learn English better, and perhaps French to aid her in her future as a bi- lingual secretary. This year at jasper she is taking home econo- mics, gyni, sociology, typing, English ll, reading. We are pleased to have Luz Ester f Tety j Men- doza from Guatemala City, Guatemala as one of our exchange students this year. Tety is a member of the senior class at jasper Central and will be a se- nior at English-American School in Guatemala when she returns in the summer. Next year she plans to study economics at the San Carlos University of Guatemala. Her warm personality and interest in our country has made her stay in jasper a memor- able one for all those associated with her. LIBRARY COUNCIL inf, emi: The library council has undertaken as its task to brighten and enlighten the world through reading. They feel that the small part they have contributed toward the goal of bettering our World has been beneficial and rewarding. I .NW f' Efficiency is the key to success hs certainly been proven by our always willing and enthusiastic members of the secretarial club.
