C'f19f'!Q9 A Meyer' The 1969 Jarvis yearbook, The Bulldog, is dedicated to a man who has demonstrated his dedi- cation to Jarvis Christian College. He is Charles A. Meyer, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, a member and former chairman of the College's Board of Trustees, and a former vice president for Sears, Roebuck 8a Company, Dallas. The College is demonstrating appreciation of Meyer: The ultra-modern Charles A. Meyer Science and Mathematics Center is named after this man. To Charles A. Meyer - a sincere, heartfelt thanks. The Jaffvfz' Mayfeff Pfam The development of Jarvis' building and academic programs of the 1960s is impressive indeed. The follow- ing pages illustrate this through photography. Also illus- trated, through architectural drawings, are proposed buildings of the 1970s. Under the Campus Master Plan, the developments of the 1960s are labeled Phase I, and those of the 1970sg Phase Il, Phase I, which began a decade ago, reached its pinnacle in 1969, Capital improvements consum- mated under Phase l include: - The 31, 5-million Charles A, Meyer Science and Mathematics Center 419693. - The half-million dollar Olin Library and Communi- cation Center 419653. - The James A, Aborne Health Center 419613. - Four brick-rock men's and women's dormitories 4early 196053, - Administration Building now in remodeling stages. - Fellowship Center refurnished, - Maintenance Building 419613, - Faculty Housing under construction in 1969. As the College's business is educating, any campus development must necessarily complement the academic program, And Jarvis' academic program is in good standing, The College's full accreditation by the South- ern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1967 is a high- light of academic progress. 1 ,Q - DR, J, O, PERPENER, Jarvis President The College also maintains approval of the Texas Education Agency and is affiliated with Texas Christiar University, In addition, Jarvis is approved byfor affil- iated with many national, regional, and state organiza tions, The College offers bachelor's degrees in more than 20 fields, Phase ll, an integral part of the College 's Master Plan, will start developing early in 1970. The projected capital improvements of that five -year phase include: - Center for Human Health and Development. - Center for Religion and Philosophy. - Center for Applied, Graphic, and Performing Arts. - Student Life Center, - Dormitories for men and women, Providing the leadership for these developments is Dr, John Oliver Perpener, the College's fifth and first inaugurated President, He became Executive Vice Presi- dent in 1959 and five years later 419643 was made Pro- vost and Chief Administrative Officer, The following year, he was named President, On October 1, 1967, his inauguration was carried out, President Perpener holds the Doctorate 419523 from the University of Colorado, Dr, and Mrs, Perpener are parents of Carmena Maye 4Mrs, John A, Richards3 and John Oliver Perpener III, MRS, PERPENER President Perpener is flanked by son John 4left3 and son -in -law John ground are Mrs, Perpener 4left3 and daughter Car- mena 4Mrs, John .J 3 'ti.f Richards3. But when he spat out Foot-foot-foot as quick as you could draw breath, you knew you had a lesson to learn from the Gentleman Professor. He was one of the most sincere, dedicated, and passionate teachers where knowledge was concerned, spoke one of his former students, Dr. Charles Berry. He taught that knowledge was there for you if you had the motivation to seek it out. And Mr. McCoy helped his students seek out that motivation. His words were a shock wave of concern. One of his younger friends and students was Simon Edwards who said Mr. McCoy would often exhort: 'Foot-foot-foot!! I don't have time for your fool- ishness If you don't want to work go on home and come back when you have your mind on some- thing more constructive. Teaching was more than a living to the science professor - more than a passion. Teaching was his hope for productive lives in others. lf you don't come in here to learn, he would tell his students, just get out of my classroom and stay out so the other folks can learn. But once Mr. McCoy had your scholarly attention, he felt he could polish our skills. And he could. The Professor was a religious man. And the religion he lived by was enforced by the science he taught. Few men of science believed in God asdid Mr. McCoy. He believed all life was a gift of God, said M. L. Lanier, one of his fellow teachers. His actions, and words, told his students earnestly: I Care. He was keenly interested in X' lg' 9 A X the progress of Jarvis, and the Q greatest tribute we can give him Dr. J. O. Perpener, Jarvis Presi dent is the building of a better life and a better Jarvis, declared Q - 5 ,. An early photo Mr. McCoy was a man who helped mold many lives, a man who believed hard work developed a man. His work was not just in the classroom, laboratory, study, or library. CHe was an avid reader.J With his handiwork, he helped maintain college property. He appreciated nature. Witness to this is the row of pin oak trees he planted along a campus avenue. He cared for saplings. He cared for life. As if writing an epitaph, Simon Edwards presents this proverb Professor McCoy surely would endorse. Time is too short, and our responsibilities are too tall for us to indulge ourselves in foolishness. - James Carroll McCoy Jan. 25, 1886 - Dec. 3, 1968 ' . To Armstrong, Phillips, Sand 9 fn M oflgm- Highway Collision Kills Studiis JAMES ARMSTRONG MARK PHILLIPS ALFRED SANDERS The memorial services were meditative---quietly searching for answers. Eulogies made by the minister and students seemed to battle the silence of the hundreds of mourners. This was on Saturday afternoon, May 24, 1969. Within the preceding 24 hours, three Jarvis students were fatally injured in a highway tragedy only a few miles east of the College. James Craine Armstrong, 19, Dallas sophomoreg Mark Patrick Phillips, 20, Longview sophomore: and Alfred Lee Sanders, 24, Terrell senior. On the afternoon of May 23, the three men were traveling in a white sedan which somehow collided with a station wagon between Big Sandy and Gladewater on U.S.l-lwy. 80. Apparent driver of the sedan, Sanders, was killed instantly: Armstrong died shortly afterward. Phillips died early the next morning fMay 245. Sanders was to be graduated with the bachelor's degree at the Jarvis commencement on May 25 - two days after the crash. Bffofh ef' f?00'g.Qf'Q He Pu! He was born March 16, 1869, and died June 2, 1969. Brother Rodgers was a pioneer promoter of Jarvis, as he in the 1910s helped clear land for College buildings, which he helped build. Farmer, carpenter, preacher - these were his vocations. Ir1 1959, Jarvis presented Brother Rodgers an Award of Honor for Life- Time Commitment to the College. And in turn, we hope to make each student a recipient - a vessel into which facts and figures will be poured, mixed and hopefully retained. We will strive to make each individual an analyst, able to study objectives, to rea- son, to separate, to criticize and to recommend. Each student will be a responder: one who will be called upon to answer, to refute, to provide and participate. It is our hope to make each an observer - attentive, preceptive, and a good listener. He will no longer be a statistic but avery important individual for whom new programs and new processes are innovated to keep abreast of the changing college environ- ITIEIII , Finally, we will stress the fact that college is primarily an intellectual experi- ence. Training is involved: vocation is not negligible: social participation must be lively and interestingg physical activity must be vigorous. Nevertheless, Q central objective of college is the cultivation of the mind for a better tomorrow. This we will hold fast to, letting our leaders lead and our followers follow, thus making us a body of united young americans, pure of heart, sound of mind, and sure of purpose.
