Wayne Velicky A child, entering elementary school for the first time, finds that a new world has been opened to him and all his friends. Through these seven years, he obtains new ideas, develops new hobbies and interests, and increases his knowledge. As he progresses, he and his parents save papers, drawings, and handicraft as a record of his achievement as well as for sentimental reasons. In one such collection, we found a book of poems, written and compiled by the fifth grade of Jarratt High School in the school year 1956-57. The completed work was entitled “Our Poems” and each selection from it, presented here, was written by a senior of 1964. These gems of literature are written here exactly as they were written in the book, errors included. Before me, I held in my hands a newspaper of the future. The lead story was headlined Beverly Parker, World's Greatest Woman Athlete, Gives Birth to Sex- tuplets. Beverly always said she wanted six children but, I didn't know she meant all at once. What a coincidence! The attending physician was Dr. Daphne Owen. She’s soared to great heights since her days at good ole J.H.S. Beverly's first visitor was Judy Hall who flew in from Cape Kennedy where she holds the position of chief mathematician of the United States space program. Jean Rideout flew up from Florida to visit and invited the mother and children to Florida where everything's SONNY . Marie Bottoms sent a wire of congratulations, We understand that she is rather busy in her job as secretary to Virginia's present governor. The only one of Beverly's friends who wasn't heard from was Suzanne Owen. She is with her husband who is somewhere overseas. In the next article, I read about a promising young dentist, William Ballance, who had just opened his office in Jarratt. Next, in the business section, I saw that Clifford Richardson, famous for his dealings in oil, had bought up the SKIPPY Peanut Butter Company on the side. Then, an article announcing a rock and roll show in Richmond caught my eye. I noticed that Sonny Horner would be among the stars, He became famous when he brought back that all-time favorite JEANNIE With the Light Brown Hair,” One of the letters to the editor was written by Aubrey Harrison, Believe it or not, in the family tra- dition, Aubrey has become a teacher. Do you remember the quiet boy in the Class of ‘64, Ralph Harris? As I glanced through the book review section, I saw that his book, How to Succeed Without Ever Really Talking, is now number one on the best seller list. Louis Briley, who used to drive a school bus at JHS, now owns a bus company with which he can HALL many people. Jarratt has now become such a prospering community that new housing developments are springing up everywhere, The next article featured the first three families to occupy these modern homes: Mary Elizabeth and David Zimmerman, Sandra and Wayne Harris, and Lorene and Melvin Harrell, Another bit of Jarratt news I read was that the famous nurse, Deanna Willis, has come to Jarratt to head up a Red Cross drive. On the sports page, I found that Charles Ricketts has just won the Indianapolis 500--on his motor- cycle no less! Jeanne Williams was pictured peering over stacks of fan mail. She is now secretary to a famous movie star, Next, on the society page, I saw that well-known playboy, Larry Craft, surrounded by several beauti- ful girls, Larry got his start at Weldon Mills and now owns several such companies. Finally, I reached the comic section and was surprised to find a new addition, drawn by none other than Ralph Miller. 29 Who’s Who BEST PERSONALITY BIGGEST FLIRTS Jean Rideout Mary Elizabeth Harrell Billy Ballance Louis Briley GUEST MOST ATHLETIC Jean Rideout Beverly Parker Sonny Horner Clifford Richardson MOST COURTEOUS MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Marie Bottoms Judy Hall Billy Ballance 30 Billy Ballance Wéo’s Who oC “ MOST MISCHIEVOUS MOST POPULAR Jean Rideout Jean Rideout Ralph Miller Sonny Horner y CO EO TIT TI MOST STUDIOUS MOST TALENTED Suzanne Owen Daphne Owen Billy Ballance Sonny Horner NEATEST QUIETEST Suzanne Owen Lorene Wilkinson Sonny Horner 31 Ralph Harris When We Were Young... ubrey Harrison Marie Bottoms he oa J, 7 Ys Y oN Mae Ralph Miller ‘ Sonny Horner 32 Ralph Harris Beverly Parker Charles Ricketts hows. aormronnion. They told us then that she would grow out of it. BOS ich : TSarralt | Jarratt High School, Jarratt High School, we are pledged to thee, Pledged to keep thy name forever sacred in the hearts of we _Who pass between thy stately doors and climb thy a stairs, Yes, we are pledged for Jarratt High is ours, Ours to proudly represent with honor and fair play, Showing others that we really, truly mean it when we say that We are proud of Jarratt High, so proud that we could bust, We're proud of Jarratt, make her proud of us, Girls’ Dasketball The Jarratt girls started out this year with a high goal; they were determined to retain the coveted championship that they had fought so hard to win last year. The enthusiasm of their new coach, Mrs, Dorothy Ricketts, made the girls want the honor even more, With a new coach and a high goal to guide them, the girls once more brought to Jarratt High School the honor of having the champion girls team of District C, During the regular season of play, the Jarratt girls won thirteen of the fourteen games that they play- ed, Their only loss was to McKenney in sudden death play-off. When the tournament began, Jarratt ranked first and was scheduled to play the fourth place team, Waverly, Jarratt's girls defeated Waverly 44 to 18 and immediately turned their thoughts toward the final game with arch rival Stony Creek, Throughout the season, Stony Creek had proved to be rough competition, but the determined Jarratt team was just too much for the Stony Creek girls. The final score found Jarratt the victor, 32 to 25, For the third consecutive year, Jarratt brought home the girls trophy. Four of Jarratt’s players were chosen for the District All-Star Team: Marie Bottoms, Beverly Parker, Judy Hall and Jean Rideout, Marie Bottoms and Beverly Parker were also chosen for the Tournament All- Star Team, Pictured above, the team members are: KNEELING, left to right, Daphane Owen, Marie Bottoms, Beverly Parker, Jean Rideout, Mary Frances Craft, and Judy Hall; STANDING, left to right, Jean Penning- ton, Connie Edwards, Irene Zimmerman, Mrs. Ricketts, Bernice Williams, the team mascot, Sondra Ezelle, Joyce Hall, Joan Harris, and Patsy Parker. 50 Senior Guard District All-Star Tournament All-Star Senior Forward District All-Star Tournament All-Star Marie Bottoms Co-Captain Beverly Parker Co-Captain Senior P Guard District All-Star Senior Jean Rideout Forward District All-Star Judy Hall Senior Forward Daphne Owen Sophomore Guard Mary Frances Craft VAUEAtE 5 6 AGhUts «tore! sl efeueions CULE Vmctetatcnels Jarratt: eo (SOS. reverecs ajevane cu VVARerIeCId arene JALEALE sie cre SU ccteh ciate se eleters IC KCONE Year. This simple sentence may not be any consolation to the members of the basketball team, but it sums up the feelings of most of their followers who rejoiced with them in their victories and shared their sorrow at losses. The boys finished the season with a record of three wins and eleven losses, This was in no way an indication of the ability, sportsmanship, or teamwork of the boys, for, in all three areas, the Jarratt Aces rated high, The first team consisted of two seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore, Each had his own special ability, so that, when they were put together, they formed a well-rounded team, Their three victories, Surry once and Stony Creek twice, were wonderful examples of all three--ability, sportsman- ship, and teamwork, The Aces last victory over Stony Creek made them eligiblefor the tournament. Although Jarratt did not win that first tournament game, their playing was by far superior to that of the Opposing team, McKenney, who seemed stunned, The final score was McKenney 46 - Jarratt 41, That game was perhaps the most exciting of the season, The Aces, with their spirit of determination, have made Jarratt High School very proud of them, this year, Pictured above are the members of the team, They are: KNEELING, Freddy Briley, Mr. J. Mrs. Lucy Saunders coached the team last year, Even though they lost two players last year, the team this year hopes to be much better than ever before., Mrs, Ricketts is the coach of the girls this year.
