Each little bird seemed to take the form of a real person. A little bird was busily gathering the food from the ground and carrying it away for his winter supply. It reminded me of an efficient secretary always thinking of the next day’s work and doing extra work. I knew this could be no other than Ruth Bendall, the girl who always used to know the answers. Then there was a red-headed woodpecker who couldn’t seem to make up his mind whether to eat his crumbs or carry them away for later when there wouldn’t be any to eat. This reminded me of Billy Felts, who couldn’t figure out whether to go to college or buy acar. Shh! Don’t let Mr. Owen hear of this; we want to see Billy in college next term. Next, I noticed one little bird showing all the others what a big supply he had already gotten. It made me think of a farmer showing off his prize cows and pigs and a Henry J. This I decided could only be George Bradley. Then there was a bluejay which seemed in earnest chatter with an older bird. What, I wondered, could Edward Harrell be doing on his knees in front of Mr. Clarke. So, at last the ‘‘ole boy’’ had gotten up enough nerve! And, oh look! There are two cute little love birds who seem not to care about food or anything else in our world. Those could only be the new Mr. and Mrs. Perry Matthews. Perry sure got a basketball player, but as a Mom-e-e -- well, Goldie, I don’t know. And there’s a lonely little mocking bird chirping sweetly. This was the one and only Doris Pair, our favorite singer. Ah! There's a little bluebird patting gently around. This was Betty Lou Jenkins walk- ing around in her modern kitchen, cooking for the U. S. Navy. Over there is the bird with the G.I. feather cut. Well, that could bring to memory only one person, Prince Proctor, who is now a professor in Civics at the University of Richmond. And look, there’s a little bird with a very heavy package. That must be Pauline Starke with her thirty-page letter to mail to Joe. Hope it doesn’t break her to mail it! There to the left is a wren who is much quieter than the rest. This is everybody’s friend, Rosalind Owen, and I can tell by her smile that she has been successful in all her undertakings. But, ha! ha! Look at that robin with his chest stuck out. That’s bound to be David Grizzard, the ‘‘Big Man”’ in Grizzard, a well-known city. There seems to be only one little bird left; it also has a large bundle. No, nota let- ter this time! It’s library books. And as you have already guessed, it’s Anne Redman, the librarian’s helper of good ole J. H. S. Woops! What was that? My, my, it’s raining and I didn’t even know it. I must have been dreaming. But I wouldn’t mind trying it again, if it would bring back memories of old friends as wonderful as those were. And now I’d better run for shelter. It had made wonderful progress in the past year. The band has been in several parades the past year. The first was the Community Day Parade, held in Jarratt in September. Christmas time brought on many parades and the band participated in the one held in Petersburg and the one held in Emporia. Mr. Mazza has started a Junior Band. This is to start the younger boys and girls interested in music. Soon these young musicians will be able to join the larger band. The entire band gets together two periods every Tuesday and plays music of many different kinds, from popular hits to real peppy marches. The band members, working very hard, hope to have one of the best bands in the State of Virginia. With many concerts and parades in the future, the entire group of young musicians is looking forward to many more years together. RUCKER - ROSENSTOCK S. F.
