world peace, His unprecedented, one-day visit in the US. was the culmination of plans by men of all faiths. 7 ARM Suqgey-President Johnson was photographed in a reclining chair at Bethesda Naval Hospital the day after his gall bladder op- eration on October 8. He conducted the work of his office from his hospital room and his Texas ranch during his recuperation. 8 Proud Studen!-Charles Craig, 19-year-old freshman at Iowa uni- versity, demonstratcd his criticism of draft-card burning incidents by displaying his draft card on his jacket with the note: HI'm a draft card carrying American and proud of itf' Our role in the Vietnamese war sparked the incidents. 9 B!ackoul4The glittering metropolis of New York City was thrust into darkness on November 9 by a massive power failure affecting hundreds of miles along the eastern seaboard, City residents and commuters were stranded in offices, railroad and subway stations for hours before service was restored. The crippling condition was caused by a faulty relay at a Canadian generating station near Niagara Falls. I0 New Ambassador-Arthur Goldberg was named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by the President after the death of Ambassa- dor Adlai Stevenson on July 14 in London. Goldberg was secretary of laborlunder President Kennedy and a U.S. Supreme Courtjustice when named to the U.N. post. 1 1 Startling Faslzions'-Bold and contrasting blocks of color were the youthful fashion note of 1965. The eye-catching designs even ex- tended the length of campus stockings worn with the costumes. 12 Rnyaliy on Tom-Princess Nfargaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon, arrived in New York on November 4 for a whirlwind tour ofthe US. During their visit, they took time out for fun-filled activi- ties such as a ride on a cable car in Frisco and gala parties in Holly- wood and the nationls capital. FOREWORD Each year contains many memorable events good, bad, and indifferent. Some recalled bring pleasure and joyg some pain, sorrow, or regret5 some are difficult to recall unless some- thing prods the memory or an event calls it back to recollection. As days pass into years, we hope this record of the year 1966, compiled for your enjoyment by the Lancer staff, will prove to be for you a treasure of pleasure Whenever opened. Though we worked hard to compose this yearbook of memories, nevertheless, our associa- tions in this effort were enjoyable, and we ourselves found pleasure in our labors. lt shall be a year we shall recall happily and hope it will be such a one for you. DON YOUNGLUND Mr. Frazer returns to Jardine, and Luider his capable leadership we shall continue to rise as one of the finest junior high schools in Wichita. We Welcome him and are con- fident we can rely on him to provide an atmosphere of learning second to none-- education par excellence. MR. GEORGE H. SHEPHERD if L W Mr. tauber found the transition from the classroom to acting f vice-principal an interesting one. As a mathematician he was tops--as a vice principal he met the challenge and emerged the victor. 4 Dr. Younglund, though with us for only a brief time, left the imprint of his philos- ophy and personality on us all, and it has become an integral, living part of the con- sciousness of the teachers and the students of Jardine. We wish him Well and the very best, which he so richly merits, in his new ca- pacity. MR. PAUL FRAZER A Well -run school must have a person who can keep its machinery smoothly running with little evidence of the labors involved. What would we do without our Mr. Shepherd to keep his finger on the pulse of Jardine, and keep the patient alive and vital? What on earth would we do without our able mentor? As an assistant adminis- trator, he can walk with the best and cast a mighty tall shadow as he goes. MR. JAMES W. STAUBER ' Q ADMINISTRATION I X 1 I M in fum l MR. COUNSELOR ' Have problems? Their young minds will soon be engulfed in the ideological whirlpool of national and world politics, and it will take an informed citizen to maintain a sense reason and direction in the America of the future. With this goal in mind, every student shall have the opportunity of developing into as well-informed and positive a performing American as he can become. LIBRARY A library holds a collection of the knowledge and wisdom of the years and of the great minds of all ages eternally at our fingertips. The library is our storehouse of information, of humor, of phil- osophy, of life and lives, and of pure pleasure. The computational skills acquired in the elementary schools must be maintained and broadened, and previously learned ideas in mathematics must be clarified, simpli- fied, and unified with more advanced concepts. It is hoped that through such an approach pupils are more properly prepared for their future roles in otu' modern technological world. SPANISH Mrs. Jennie Thomas 14 AS the speed of travel and com- munications has increased very rapidly, the need has increased for better understanding of people of other cotuitries. The students of Spanish not only learn to understand, speak, read, and write the language of the people of the many Spanish speaking countries, but they also develop an appreciation for the culture of these countries. Many fads may come and go, but the beautiful music endures for generations. Two major objectives of all science teaching-should be apparent. First, the stimulation of interest and the arousing of a student's curiosity about his world is a goal toward which we strive. Second, it would be a desirable outcome of our work together if those students who wish a career in science would find the area for which they are best suited. Apart from these, the immense importance of science and the scientist in the life of every individual demands a basic knowledge of the problems, techniques, and methods of science. As long as the world must face problems of population control, over-production, under devel- oped areas, mismanagement of natural resources, and an advanced technology, then so long will citizens require training in science. 16 READING CLASSES S SSS if if kfh' V stirs V,', ViV,.V Si,. Mrs Frances Mrs. Bessie Mrs. Fairie Boyers Lance Martin Reading classes are designed to increase the reading achievement and ability of a selected group of students, and are geared to reinforce and con- tinue instruction and to promote the individual independent reading habits for mental growth and leisure enjoyment. When the printed page can deliver to the student its full meaning and purposes, then he has become educated, for the key to all learning has been given him--the ability to read and to comprehend. SPECIAL EDUCATION Special Education Teachers: Mis. Bessie Lance QNOT SHOWNJ Mrs. Dorothy Glover, QRIGHTJ Mr. David Youngblood QLEFTJ Special education provides an atmosphere of learning for those with various handicaps so that they may learn to become N citizens fully able to make their contributions to the society in which they live. They learn at their own rate and learn to live and grow as independent, self-sufficient adults able to take their rightful place among their peers. 17 CLASSES INDUSTRIAL ARTS WOODWORKNG E-ECTRICITY METALS Mr. David Mr. Larry Almes VanPelt Whether one or all of these things apply to any one boy, it can be said ' that he will be a better citizen for 1 having had this kind of training. ' ww A X ' i-xi X Sim INDUSTRIAL ARTS has three main reasons for its importance to each and every boy. No matter what area of industrial arts is involved--whether it be woodworking, drafting, metalworking or electricity--these reasons still apply. lndustrial arts might lead to an occupation by which a living can be earnedg if not an occupation, it might lead to a hobby which can enrich the individual's leisure time. lf not a hobby or an occupation, it will at least make the individual aware of quality products and how they are madeg thus he will be a better consumer. 18 N L-J HOMEMAKING CLASSES MIS. Grace Miss Jani ce George Nickel I 1 The content in homemaking education gives girls a clearer understanding of the needs and concerns of individuals and families in a changing society. The girls learn management of time and money, preparation of food, table service, and proper etiquette, they learn to con- struct and care for clothes. They also study and practice good housekeeping, caring for child- ren, and better understanding of personal and family relations. Basic concepts are provided which can be applied to living now and in the future. TYPING Li Miss Glenda McNew Mr. Tal Baker junior High Typewriting gives the basic fundamentals of the typewriter. Students learn to type themes, reports, manuscripts, personal letters, business lettersg to address envelopes, to use carbons properly and to cut stencils for duplicating machines.
