Foreword One hundred years ago thousands journeyed westward to California to seek gold and a quick way to riches. The records these prospectors kept show they often found more danger, discouragement, and failure than golden ore. Today, a century later, we do not leave our community to find wealth. Instead, the riches sought are the sure knowledge and well-developed habits which lead to satisfying and rich living. This Phoenix, in memory of these earlier gold-seek- ers, is the log of our modern search for a more lasting kind of gold.
