When we first entered this building in September 1954, rubble and other waste lay in piles in every hallway. workmen still swarmed through the building working on unfinished jobs. Paint was still wetg stairways were unsafe to use. We were forced to have a few days' vacation because of the condition of the school. This year we entered a building spark ling clean and beautifully finished We felt the homelike atmosphere of a place llved in and adapted to our use. Now the confuslon lay in our havlng to change our course of study Formerly we hed offered a course to last two ye rs, with a promise of a semi skllled Job awaiting our gr du tes Now we were to extend our course to three years of study The graduate would now have further tra1n1ng 1n her trade, and she would be able to enter the tenth grede at Merganthaler Vocational School, where ah would be able to complete senior hlgh school work She would, in addition, contlnue her VOC3t10na1 training In worklng on these class changes, we postponed beginning our club- work and extra currlcular act1v1ties untll the second semester he first semester passed with concentration on herd work On January 30th the mldyear senlors left A few went out to work at places obtained through school officials Most of the seniors, however, went to Mergan thaler The rest of our student body took home report cards They went home gleefully because the thirty flrst of January was to be a d y of va cation for them before enterlng the work of the next semester on Feb- ruary first However, on that nlght the tr nsit strlke was declared How dld that affect our school? Well, our school was more affected we believe, than any other ln the city Our glrls, who for the most part live far away, were unable to get tr nsportatlon As a result, the percentage of ttendance for six weeks was very low when the strike was oelled off, the girls returned 1n a body Wh t a midw1nter vacation many of them had had' It had lasted from February first to March twelfth Again we concentrated on dolng the work of the semester We formed no clubs We, however, engoyed a good program of HSSGmb11GS in wh1ch we have had our own students nd outslde talent taklng part We had a successful ChP1StmQS Bazaar The style shows have been beautlful, our 8Udl9nCCS have been amazed with the dlsplay of the glrld own work In December the gym classes held an mazlng program for the teachers and student body to see The homemaklng class s have successfully enter t ined import nt guests several times In Nhy'the Alumnae ASSOClPt1OH sponsored their annual dinner, whlch was held ln the evening 1n our lunch room After thelr meeting, the floors were cleaned and they held a dance to whlch the Jane Addams girls ard tb61T escorts were lnvited we have h d three rumpus room p rtles after school ln the afternoon as a welcome to the new girls, and in celebrat1on of Hallowe'en nd Valen t1ne's Day The Faster program was the mbst 8mblt1OuS of the year In this the Student Council members, dlrected by Miss Purdy, and the Glee Club, directed by Hrs B ker, entert ined the school During the summer complete plans will b made to convert J ne Addams Vocational School so that 1ts ac demic courses w1ll be equ1va1ent to those of the Juniorliigh School We believe thrt this will gre tly change and improve our program for future years - Q U I . o J . 1 9 - . .
