VWWZW- , i. I gr Janice discusses the latest edition with the members of the staff. A small but energetic group of newspaper enthusiasts tackled the job of putting out six issues of the Blue Jay News during 1958-59. The managing editor, Janice Fredricks, oversaw the entire operation of writing stories and headlines, laying out pages, and getting the paper to the printer on time. Assisting Janice were the news editor, Gayle Arndtg the feature editor, Marilyn Porsborgg the editorial editor, Mary Farley, the review editor, Nancy Marinerg the sports editor, Gary Litt, and the art editor, Carol Hunt. Miss Millicent Nyquist advised the staff during first semester. Miss Vera Bol- linger supervised the second semester staff. Darlene Keaton, the business manager, aided by Mr, Ralph Kraft, kept the paper out of the red. The second semester saw the journalism class eagerly taking over the paper as the sen- iors departed with many memories. BLUE JAY NEWS Mary, Gayle, and Marilyn assist Janice and Miss Ny quist in proofreading the pages. Y P P Erik, Gary and Carol select pictures for the next issue. Nanc sto s to hel Darlene,

BAND Calgary or Bust! comes the cry of all fifty-six band members as they hash over plans to attend the Calgary Stampede in the Canadian city of the same name. Work and play will both be objectives of this six-day trip in July, 1959. Besides marching in a two-and-one-half-hour parade, the J.H.S. band will tour scenic sites of the surrounding area. Under the able direction of Mr. Karl Ulmer, the Jamestown High School Concert Band made a number of well-received performances during the past year. Parades, the combined concert, the annual spring concert Qthis year a benefitl, the State Dairy Show, home football and basket- ball games, and Jamestown's Diamond Jubilee are only a few of the events at which this popular organization appeared. An important offspring of the band is its many ensembles, According to Mr. Ulmer, expe- rience in small groups 'ts vital in providing for the individual training in such areas as coop- eration, independence in technique, and listening for tone quality. Presiding officers for 1958-59 were Alf Clausen, president, Ronald Tompt, vice-president, Elisabeth Sorkness, secretary-treasurer, Larry McAlpin, Suzanne Jakes, and Gaylon Swanson, librarians. 23 2
