r , The future Blue Jay News staff examines old issues for ideas. These sophomore students seem entirely absorbed in their assignments. 10 M iss Shearer looks pleased as students engage in an intriguing discus- sion. ENGLISH What's a dangling participle? How do I write a good descriptive paragraph? What plays did Thornton Wilder write? These questions and many others are answered in the English classes at J.H,S. One semester each year is devoted to the study of grammar. Speech and writing are also emphasized to help students express themselves in a clear, concise manner. The fundamentals of taking notes and using references are also a part of the curriculum. The other half of the year is spent reading great works of literature. A class in journalism is held during the first semester for juniors who are more interested in newspaper work than a study of grammar The hard working pedagogues are Miss Stella Aanrud Miss Mrllrcent Nyquist Miss Bernice Shearer Miss Glenora Watkins and Mr Ralph Kraft.

Ill KIIN 14-X Mrs Anderson heads the class rn singing German songs GERMAN LATIN The one hundred forty nine students enthusiastically attacking a foreign language this year top all previous en rollments by a definite margin German was taught ini I-I S for the first I1lTl6 Students in this course under the gurd ance of Mrs Elfriede Anderson struggled along without text books for the first few weeks because of a mistake in ship ping Everyone agreed in perfect Ger man, Aller anfang ist schwer. QA1l beginnings are hardy. Mrs. Frances Nichols made Latin a living language for her pupils, even though authorities term it as dead. Latin classes enjoyed working on special projects and displaying them at the an- nual P.T.A. exhibition. Among them were mosaics and models of ancient Roman houses. At the end of two years, the students not only understand Roman life and history, but have a better knowledge of our English language.
