T MR. CQRWIIN The presenf sfudenfs of Jamesfown High School, as well as ifs alumni, cannof buf feel regref fo know fhaf our highly regarded prin- cipal. Mr. Merfon P. Corwin, is refiring from acfive school life af fhe end of fhis year. His 36 years of leadership have made him an in- valuable parf of fhe school. If is inferesfing fo nofe fhaf Mr. Corwin came fo J.H.S. almosf by accidenf. ln l9I3 he was sfaying in Jamesfown on his way fo be inferviewed for fhe principalship in a near- by communify when Rovillus Rogers, fhen superinfendenf of schools, offered him a posi- fion as head of fhe Mafhemafics Deparfmenf here. Mr. Corwin accepfed because he liked fhis area and never did arrive in fhe ofher fown. Affer serving as assisfanf principal, Mr. Corwin became principal in I92O. The old high school building was in use fhen, buf was so crowded even affer addifions had been builf, fhaf porfable schoolrooms were puf info use. Twelve of fhese wooden sfrucfures were on fhe campus af one fime. ln fhose days. fhe high school had daily chapel exercises, a pracfice which gave Mr. Corwin more con- facf wifh fhe sfudenfs fhan he enioys foday. Since fhe complefion of fhe presenf build- ing in 1935, several new organizafions have been added fo fhe program. Mr. Corwin was insfrumenfal, for insfance, in organizing a chapfer of Nafional Honor Sociefy in J.H.S. As a maffer of facf, fhe Kappa Alpha Tau chapfer in Jamesfown was fhe firsf one in Chaufauqua Counfy. He also gave greaf encouragemenf fo fhe Fufure Teachers of America chapfer which was named for him, and fo fhe Thespian Troupe. Af fhe beginning of Mr. Corwin's adminis- frafion, fhere were only abouf one fhousand sfudenfs, including fhe ninfh grade pupils, in fhe high school. Since fhen, fhere have been as many as ninefeen hundred af one fime. The fechnical deparfmenf and vocafional courses have expanded greafly. Mr. Corwin says fhe greafesf change in sfudenfs is im- provemenf in fheir abilify 'ro speak in classes, and fhe besf change in educafion, fhe em- phasis now puf on reasoning. Mr. Corwin will probably use his execufive abilify in business affer his refiremenf. He looks forward fo having more fime fo spend oufdoors, fishing, hunfing, or iusf enioying nafure, for he is happiesf in fhese pursuifs oufside school. The fhousands of sfudenfs who have known Mr. Corwin feel fhaf fheirs was a real privi- lege,for fhey have known a man deeply kind, or if severe in aughf, fhe love he bore fo learning was af faulf. The faculfy who have faughf under Mr. Corwin have found him fair in his dealings. He has exercised his aufhorify when need required if, buf has always expecfed his feachers fo use fheir own good iudgmenf. Mr. Corwin has faken an acfive parf in communify affairs and has welcomed fhe fownspeople fo parficipafe in high school doings. To Mr. Corwin, fhen, go our hearffelf fhanks for his many confribufions fo fhe happi- ness and welfare of fhe young people of Jamesfown. There is a special place for- ever his, in fhe hearfs of all of us.
