SPORT The football team this year had the most outstanding record since 1948 as they rolled to an im- pressive 8-1 record. The Tigers were undefeated and unscored on in three games when they met the perennially strong Bessemer Whippets who handed the Tigers their first and only defeat of the year 26-20 in one of the finest played games seen in several years. Rahlo Fowler won the county scoring race and was second in the state with 153 points. The seniors Rahlo Fowler, Glenn Crihfield, Freddie Little, Jerry Bullock, Wayne Veach, Hurdle Lea, Jimmy Rodgers. Elijah King, Ralph Summerlin, and Lamar Eller will be sorely missed, but with several experienced lettermen returning, prospects arenit too dark for next year. The boys, basketball team, although only two of last years starters returned, is giving a good account of itself. Even though their record is 9-6, they have given the best teams in the county a real scare. One of the most thrilling games of the year was with Durham County, a strong AA school. Nip and tuck all the way, the Tigers finally won a thrilling 60-54 decision. By tournament time they should really give someone a headache and we predict that they will give a good account of them- selves. The girls, basketball team started the season under a handicap, since they lost two all-county guards and a high-scoring forward from last years team. Coach Klosterman has done a remarkable job of rebuilding the team. Although our season has not been too successful, we have gained expe- rience and enthusiasm with each game and have high hopes for the tournament. The baseball prospects are good this year with three all-county performers and seven lettermen returning from last year's County Championship Team. 42 g. . iw: Q U K , ,. ... '...,.,, g.n....,..
