'Q QQCS 91 XXL A f Vglb-If' E293 HW SPORTS Within recent football history the Flying Tigers for the first time finished the season with a perfect record The ligers scored l 18 points while holding their opponents to only IZ thus capturing the North Piedmont and Guildford County Conferences Very much of the success was due to our coaches Dennis franklin and S B White Jr They desired to hate a winning football team and both contributed a great deal of time and hard labor Jamestown vias rated as o e of the strongest defensive teams in the state The opponents found it impossible to cross the Tigers goal through the line or around it However they scored twice on passes Because of the Tigers fine record they were invited to play in two post season games They made a trip down to Ahoskie to play on Thanksgiving Day The team lost to Ahoskle but was invited to play Graham in the first annual Hosiery Bowl The team played a fine game but lost in the last few mmutes of play when Graham recovered a fumble and passed for a touchdown They also passed for the extra point thus defeating Jamestown to the tune of 7 to Richard XVillard Wimp Smith and Harry Hennls made the all county team this year Bill Geyer was selected to play in the Optomist Bowl at High Point Buddy Smothers Bill Geyer Bill Haney Rick Willard Wimp Smith Harry Hennis Chester Street Bill Pegram Ronald Brovnn Gene Staley C B Newton Tooty Dean Reitzel Parrish Bob Glover and Bill Carroll are seniors and will not be back next year With the help of our new gym and the guidance of Coaches Siler White and Slade the basketball teams haye made an immense improvement this year Although the gym was not completed until the bisketball season was almost over the teams took advantage of what time was lcfx by practicing almost every day The boys won 6 games lost I0 girls won 4 lost 9 games We are yery proud of the fine sportsmanship that our fans have shown and we hope that it will grow with our teams As thc Annual goes to press. the Jamestown wrestlers. coached by Don McCurry have had only,two encounters this season. Both of these were with the Purple Whirlies of Greensboro. The Whirlies defeated the Tigers the first match, but with a short time of hard practice the Tigers improved considerably and on the return bout, tied Greensboro 23-23.
