Johnson, P. King. owawaevce It is whispered around that the Commerce Club is one of the most commercial clubs on the campus. And although rtunors are rife nowadays, it seems like a pretty sure thing. This year, Lena Pantleon led the thriving little band to victory. Only mishap of the year was an ugly story concerning the conviction of certain members for violating the interstate commerce laws when they were found smuggling a girl into Sanford. President Pantleon denied the truth of the stories, but there you are. Oflicers for the year, besides Miss P., were Lloyd Sheldon, vice-president, and Harlan Edson, secretary-treasurer. This select group goes in for the social angle too, and lo and behold if they don't turn up at parks, at Stuclcenbrucks', in fact any and all places suitable for the discussion of Commerce As A Social Asset. Anyway, what with troop transports and Jamestown's being right on the railroad and everything, the Commerce kids are looking forward to a prosperous year. 'TV 5 I . A , 9? Q? LL .. X- Clalvinet Above, you see approximately twenty Big Sisters who fa, are known collectively as the Y. W. C. A. Cabinet, fb, make it their duty to pilot Freshmen through their scarifying year, fc, sponsor Rose Garden Formals, meditations, Heart Sister Week, hymn sings, Friendly Blazes and mixers, fdj join forces with the organization on the next page and sponsor Y hooks, coffee forums, Spiritual Emphasis Week and more lonely Freshmen, and who fe, devotedly follow 'Lucille Flesjer as president, Phyllis Travis as vice-president, and entrust their minutes to Florence Saude and their cash to Betty Hall. We could continue this list of sterling qualities almost indehnitely, but the W. hlushingly decline, and besides, the M. are waiting on the next page. SuHice it to say that these ladies have reached the highest place on the campus, the attic of Sanford, and there we leave them. E. J4. Cabinet ' And if the Y. W. have reached the highest place on the campus, an their ascent to the attic of Sanford, at least the Y. M. have ceased to be the lowest. For low and behold, this crystal year marked the egress of the YM from their haunt of many years, the subterranean cavern believed to be under Thaw Memorial Library. In a magnanirnous moment, they abandoned the former Y Den to the C. P. T. 'ers and took up residence in Watson Hall. And president Stanley Wasson now sits in the rosy aura once occupied by Stine's old desk. Sadie Hawkins, one of the Y's proudest calendar possessions, was last seen cavorting out in the fields with Ceres, and she never did get in. But this casualty didn't discourage the Young Men from holding weekly meetings, coffee forums and Sings, and getting together with the ladies' auxiliary to sponsor the Y book, Spiritual Emphasis Week and group discussions. ' Officers for the year besides president Wasson were Kermit Clemans, vice-president, Royce LaGrave, secretary, and Bob Stuckenbruck, treasurer, while pearls of advice dropped from the lips of Dr. St. Clair, Dr. Bullet and Prof. Schmidt, faculty advisors. Ogife evvice ecvuil-s 1 All too often are the L. S. R.'s referred to as being merely one of the quietest and most sincere organizations on the campus. It's downright frustrating to be compared with the quiet pool, when actually it ain't so. The Life Service Recruits are the only religious organization on the campus for both men and women, and they work with a will in their aim to further Christian teachings on the campus. Their meetings are inspiring and their chapel programs no less so. And churches, hospitals and Homes can rell you that the Recruits mean what they say about good will. This year they elected Lucille Flesjer president, Duane Hyde vice-president, Betty Hall A secretary, and Sam Graf treasurer. evwaaws' Never, we repeat, NEVAIR, has any organization been hurtled into such electrifying prominence in a brief moment of history as has the German Club, where yesterday they were a retreat for the scholarly pursuit of Goethe and Schiller, today they are besieged by telegrams and pleas from those who thirst for the knowledge of the teutonic customs, psychology, folkways and moresg they have sprung from being a quiet study group, to holding a vital spot in modern world thought. When Smilin' Jack stands up to the Hitlerats and gurrowls, So-SOO: denken Sie jetzt, dasz unsere Soldaten faul sind? , is it Le Cercle Fracais who understand what he's saying? Not on your life-it's the German Club! And when Skeesix briskly upbraids the desert Heinie, Ruh! Machen Sie your trap zu! , do the Latin students know what's going on? Don't make us laugh! Ha ha! It's the GERMAN kids who know what the score is! So, in their enviable position, they work like mad, with Keith McClelland making like president, Carol Condit looking like the vice-president that she is, and Lena Pantleon taking notes and dues. The only hard part about it all is tuming away the pathetic faces which gather around Watson Lounge every time the select group has one of their scrumptious and bountiful feeds. They say it's heartbreaking. Sheldon V. Brooks, V. Henna, P. Travis, A. Henne, J. Robertson, W. Haberstroh. McClelland C. Condit, Miss Lein, L. Pantleon, D. C9ZVY4i5f'1' When the chorus of voices from the Pine Room breaks into the stirring strains of Ag Threads Among the Au , or By the H2O's of the Minnetonka , you can bet your bottom nylon that-yes-that the Chemistry Club is meeting tonight. And when you step closer and peek through the key-hole you ind that the percentage of femmes in this organization is amazingly low. In fact, the percentage of males is so high, that any girl would give her right leg to join-if only there weren't those darned requirements. But there are always a couple of lovelies who brave the rigors of chemistry and break test-tubes with the best of them. If you're still looking through that key-hole, I think by now we can call you an adamant eaves-dropper. But it's worth it to see what goes on at the meetings. A favorite game is one in which the president throws acid on the vice-president, and when the v.-p. rushes up to the lab to get some base to neutralize his face, he Finds that the president has filled the ammonia bottle with phosphorus. Then when he comes back to the meeting, the other members try to remember what he looked like before he went. Anyway, Helmsworth was president this year, Ed Doherty was vice-president, and Thelma Grande wrote up the meetings and collected the dues. It is rumored that Doctor Hart was a party to these goings-on. ebicai If you should see a cat ambling down the street some day, any cat, street and day, you'll know that said feline is on his way Qaj to a meat market, there to offer his all in the face of present meat shortages, or fbj to becoming a violin string, or, and most probably, to a meeting of the Medical Club, where he will be the program for the evening. Not that the members of Medical Club are catty, but the average Medical Clubber would give his eye teeth for the privilege of dissecting a cat. And the member who manages to find one, is a lucky, lucky guy. At the annual Medical Club Dinner, catburger and hot formaldehyde are the piece de resistante, and a loyal clubmember can scent a scent a mile off. The future doctors rompecl at their annual picnic, being careful not to squush any defenseless arachnids or coleoptera. Doctor I-lelmsworth was president of the pepcats, John Brandenburg was vice-president, and Dorcey Davy was Secretary-treasurer. f - For next year, the club is planning to award a special plaque to Oscar, for having been a member in good standing of the club for a period of time exceeded by that of no other member, dead or alive. By now you probably know that these are the Spanish kids. Yes, the Spanish kids. This year marked the advent on the campus of the Student Pan-American League of Jamestown College, affiliated with the National Student League. Initiative in its founding was taken by the second year Spanish class, and membership in the classy organization was by invitation only, with a ten cent cover charge. The Spaniels elected Senorita Voge presidents, Senorita Cafferty presiclente segunda, fpresidente del vicej, Senor Beaumont el jefe del dinero, y Senorita Woodward la secreteria, with Miss Lein la profesora grande, maestra bonita, and amiga simpatica. The League met for the first time just in time to get above picture taken, and thereafter settled down to a semester of diligent delving into the folkways and mores of the vecinos buenos. Anyway, die Mitgleider, er, - uh, uh - los miembros, are looking ahead to long and prosperous careers in the Western Hemisphere. Shades of Iberia! e Asc' tiers The slaves of the mask this year started things off big by leading the dramatics department in and out of the tremendous spectacular, colossal, gigantic-I guess we can stop this sort of thing now-anyway, the Naughty Nineties Revue . Nostalgia! Drahmal Music! And overtones and reverberations from the faculty, too. The spirit of the whole thing so imbued the members that when they had their collective group pictured for posterity, they just naturally fell into the family album number you see below. Anyway, it went to show that Stutsman County is not dead, no sir! And they even went on the road, kid, and came baclc the same night. They elected Wendell -losal president, Keith McClelland for president of vice, and Mary Flowers secretary-treasurer. However, the aforementioned president accepted a government position of a pretty low rank after the first semester, and so Mr. McClelland moved up a notch, to become president. Since Miss Flowers refused to go into the army at this time, she was really the only one sure of holding her position all year. Second semester, the Masquers gave their annual play, this year, Outward Bound . Mrs. Jaclcson beat the rationing board by about a few weelcs, and outdid herself with the turkey and trappings. Every year we say that Mrs. out-does herself, but honest, it gets resplendenter and resplendenter. Okay kids, the curtain's fallen, last one off ,with his make-up is a dead Jap. Crash!!! S. The band, too, got stymied this year by travel restrictions, but the new uniforms now celebrating their second birthday, were as resplendent as ever. The very fact that band members are always the first ones to basketball games, shows that they are prompt, faithful, well-dressed, hardy, loyal, musical, and must know a lot about basketball games. The band has distinguished itself this year by having members who are all able to read music. In these unusual times, a sterling organization, yes, we repeat it, a sterling organization. 1 1 Clow The fifty-odd smiling faces Cocld' goes with 'fifty'j that you see below, open at times to produce harmony of celestial beauty. Their repertoire extends from Bach and Palestrina during concerts, to that modern-classic, Monsieur Cinq 4 Cinqu, while waiting for King to take pictures. Besides the fact that they have a brand new mascot, namely Susan K. Black, chorus members are going mad with delight this year over their election of Doug Oyan president, jean Robertson vice-president, Grace Dittmer secretary, and Keith McClelland business manager. In face of the travel mirtailment this year, chorus members were last seen grimly heading out of town on roller skates for their annual tour of Stutsman County. So there they go with a mi re do. The-late opening date of college and a week vacation for the men to help with threshing intemittently handicapped the Jimmies and as a result they were not quite ready when the schedule got under way. The revamped schedule brought the Cassellmen in contact with Wahpeton in the Wildcat lair for their initial conference tilt. Although the Jimmies pushed the Science men around considerably the hosts managed to run up a final score of 19-0. In their first home game the Jimmies met the Mayville Comets and hung up their first seasonal win with a score of 2447. In the traditional Valley City game the Cassellmen travelled to Valley to play on an icy field the coldest day of the season, but they were successful in concluding the game 12-O. The unpredictable Ellenclale Dusties visited the orange and black lair for the Jamestown College Homecoming game, and although the 26-13 decision went the Jimmie way, the Jamestown eleven had more than enough trouble keeping on top. At Moorhead the Jimmies were forced to bow to a pile-driving MSTC team to the tune of 20-13. On Armistice Day Coach Cassell toolc his men to Aberdeen where they met the Aberdeen Wolves. In the hardest-fought, hardest-hitting, best ofiensively played game of the season the Jimmies concluded their season with a 0-0 deadlock. As the season progressed, however, his guidance shaped the team into a fighting, championship quint which won twelve of its sixteen games, three non-loop encounters and one league game. Nine Jirnmies won their letters in the 1943 season: Bud Buchholtz, Everett Kangas, Eldot Sagehorn, Bob Easthurn, Dick Herzog, CHE Hendrickson, Sidney Hughes, Dick Norgaard and Louis Carlson. This squad of Jimmie tracksters proved to be one of the most well-balanced teams in recent Jimmie history. Led by Captain A1 Graves, the J-men participated in four meets and two relays, winning three of the four meets,- and placing second in the other. In the hrst meet of the year the Jimmies narrowly eked out a win over Ellendale and Aberdeen in a triangular meet by gathering 711.6 points to Ellendale's 67 and Aberdeen's 42116. In a well represented meet at Aberdeen the Jimmies found tougher competition and tallied only a fourth place in both the one-half and one mile relay. At Moorhead in their annual relays the orange and black men found victory in the 440 yard relay and placed second in the one-half and the one mile relay. A third place in the sprint medley ended the honors which the Jimmies won in this meet. The annual North Dakota State meet was held in Jamestown on May 9. A powerful aggregation from Ellendale gathered 49 points, while the Jimmies found themselves in second place with a total of 351k points. At Aberdeen in a pentangular meet the Jamestown men compiled a total of 51 points to best their rivals for top honors. On May 22 and 23 the Cassellmen finished their season by winning the Conference title in a meet held in Taylor Stadium. The Jimmies, with a grand total of 113 points can give credit for their win to the excellent work of every member of the squad. Ellendale placed second with 75 points, Valley City captured third with 39, and Mayville, Nlinot and Wahpeton rounded out the scoring by gaining 30, 1554: and 516 points respectively. One record was broken at this meet. The Alumni registered, the Freshmen beat the Sophomores in the Tug-o-War, and Mr. Orlady crowned Elizabeth Robertson Queen of the May in a chapel service that was the epitome of all lovely services. Attended by Princesses King, Fiegel, Condit and Hartley, Elizabeth was gracious and regal, a queenly queen. The Homecoming Victory Parade wound from the Stadium around town and back to the Stadium, and Sigma Tau Delta toolc home the money for the first prize in floats. The Saturday of the gala week-end worked up to the Naughty Nineties Revue, which, due to harvesting et al, went on, yea, half dressed, but tremendous, yea tremendous. Because of the war fewer came home than in past years, but the spirit prevailed, and that was what counted. Gradually, as the weelc-end died, the homecomers actually went home, the crown was laid away for another year, the team settled down to hard worlc, and eventually even the gay nineties fell back exhausted. But why not? Who didn't? . And Rothstein had done such a flawless job on the whole thing, had kept peace so beautifully, and had presented to Homecomers such a completely resplendent Homecoming, that chroniclers near and far recorded the whole thing as The Rothstein Spectacle , and sat back satisfied, waiting for 1943. In The Blackout 4 vacuafion 'f 'i Nlwt-5 , The spring of 1942 saw a most successful i production of the redoubtable Shalcespeards x L great tragedy, Macbeth . Alvin Anderson, as 'l the ambitious usurper, Macbeth, played his l role with fine discrimination and herce intensity. His soliloquies had the quietness of profound thought with an undercurrent of fiery tempera- 5 ment. Lady Macbeth was portrayed most 3 vividly and passionately by Marjorie Thompson. Q Her sleep-walking scene was one of the greatest I performances that has ever been projected from l l the stage of Jamestown College. The costumes were an artistic triumph for Wendell josal who 1 designed them all. ssuwa Hon of Hannelle The Assumption of Hannel-le'Q a play by a German playwright, Gerhart Hauptmann, ' was presented at Christmas time. The play is a finely wrought combination of naturalness and fantasy. The inspiring story of the simple faith of I-Iannelle made real to the audience the true, spiritual significance of the Christmas season. The child-like and fanciful Hannelle was portrayed with delicacy and pathos by Elizabeth Robertson. The background of organ music and singing voices integrated the play into a moving piece of dramatic artistry. L- -5 :- 'K+ -, , A i ,559 l ,E jg a I Aussbfy :nec-ies wwf W. L. H 1. :.,.-, ,r -, .y.
