Mr. Robert Aylor, the Superintendent, of Frederick County Schools, is well-known among the faculty and stu- dents of our school for the part he has played in the educa- tional program of Frederick County throughout the years. He frequently visits the various schools to meet with the school administrators to discuss classroom policies and ways of improving the total school program. He is also in charge of transportation and maintenance. The Frederick County School Board ttf, The Frederick County School Board offers guidance and direction to the administration and operation of schools throughout Frederick County. The Board Members dis- cuss ways and means of operating schools and establishing schools policies during their monthly meetings. Mr. Aylor pauses in the midst of his daily duties. s X. Z Q La Mr. Melton Wright , Director of Instruction Mr. Wright is responsible for the instructional program in all of the schools in Frederick County. He works with principals and teachers to improve the quality of instruction in our schools. Some of his duties are: planning workshops and extension classes for teachers, selecting new textbooks, visiting teachers in their classrooms, investigating new ideas and techniques in education and introducing and experiment- ing with some of these innovations with other members of the administrative and teaching staff. Mr. James V. Hutton Testing Coordinator and Elementary Supervisor Mr. Hutton plans and directs the testing program in all of the schools in Frederick County. Fawcett, the assistant principal, is another well-known person frequently seen in out school. As his title indicates, he takes over the duties of our principal in his absence. Besides this, he issues absentee cards and teaches social studies. 'Included among his other duties are assigning lock- ers to all new students entering James Wood and collecting teachers' monthly reports. In spite of all of these responsibilities, Mr. Fawcett is always willing to help anyone in any way he can. Mr. james C. Gordon is now beginning his fourth year as principal of james Wood. Each morning he greets the entire student body when making announcements over the public address sys- tem. He participates in many of our school activities such as sponsoring the BETA club. Our principal is free with his advice and ex- tends a friendly, helping hand wherever it is needed. 'By taking such an interest in our school, he natu- rally creates the same enthusiasm among the mem- bers of the faculty and student body. . Excused ot Unexcused -which will it be? Miss Lucy Painter, another familiar face at james Wood, is the school bookkeeper. It is her duty to keep all financial records for the school. Throughf her efforts, confusion and work is lessened in ourjschool. A new, -face in the school office this year is that 'of' Mrs. Anita Bly, the school secretary, Mrs. Bly, a past, graduate of James Wood, is a great asset to our school and has already proved herself to be indispensable. Lucy Painter, seated, begins to type the day's corre- spondence while Anita Bly, standing, answers the phone. IMPROVING FARMING METHODS 3 . 'Sw up I 1 Harry Kems and Frank Ritenour are all smiles as they show off some of the Agriculture De- partments equipment. The main purpose of the Future Farmers of America organization is to develop rural leadership, cooperation and citizenship among its members. In the development of leadership all members served on a committee, studied and practiced par- liamentary procedure. They conducted well-planned monthly meetings, put on radio programs and spon- sored a Father-Son Banquet. They assisted their communities by organizing Keep Virginia Green Crews, in each majesterial district by the prevention of forest fires, setting out tree seedlings and repairing farm machinery. Also, the Agriculture Fair and Pure Bred Swine chains were sponsored by the club. At Christmas they as- sisted the student body in collecting 60 baskets of food for the needy. Last fall the members prepared the seedbed and seeded the newly graded playground of 6 acres and the lawn arotmd the new Kline Elementary School. 160 Spomorr: Mr. Whitacre, Mr. Givens, and Mr. Davis PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE Mary Ridings and Loretta Wilkins examine some lovely, prize-winning flower arrangements at the Frederick County Fair which was held at the Armory.
