STUDENT DRIVER TRAINING Keeping pace with modern education, James Wood High is noted for its driver education program which is under the direction of Archie Manuel. Students are given a thorough background and complete training in the theory and practice of driving. This course is aimed at producing better trained and therefore safer drivers in our state. 84 SPECIAL FEATURES IN CLASS AT HOME Mary Barnsley, who was unable to attend school the first semester of this year due to injuries suffered in a car wreck, is shown above attending class from her wheel chair. This was made possible through the local telephone company, which installed a special communication system between Maryls home and her classrooms at james Wood. This system, one of the few in operation for such purposes, enabled Mary to hear and participate in all class discussions and assignments. Using this unique system, Mary maintained a high average in all of her required subjects, a tribute to her courage, her parents' faith, and the school. 85 ,-. 5 -:wb First Row, Left to Right: Doris Greathouse, Ann Racey, Judy Lupton, Dorothy Feltner, Betty Slonaker, Charlotte Leight, Luella Dellinger, Patricia Mauzy, Carol Lake, Betsy Phelps, Myrna Smith Jean Boswell, Sandra Burcham. First, it widens the basis of sci- entific information in the pupil. Sec- ond, it seeks to find students who are definitely interested in science as a career, or to interest some students in its many opportunities. For the first group, courses in gen- eral science are offered in the eighth and ninth grade as an introduction to biology, chemistry and physics. These courses offer both foundation for con- tinued study in advanced schools and colleges as well as information needed in life occupations. W l f f Increasing interest in mathe- matics and emphasis on its place in our scientific age are making this subject more important than ever before. The math curriculum at James Wood includes general math, first and second year algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. Above, Mrs. Mildred Saunders instructs class in algebra. At james Wood, American history is studied in grades eight and eleven and government in the twelfth grade. Since a good back- ground is essential, a course in world history is offered in the tenth grade and vocational civics is a ninth grade elective. HISTORY By using maps, as well as films, filmstrips, slides, and records we try to broaden the students' concepts. Our aim is to help build a better democracy through an increasing knowledge of history. 95 www.. The one hundred and forty-three students enrolled in the All-Day group receive training through classroom study and home farm projects. The Young Farmer group now includes twenty young men who have either graduated or left school and are now farming. They meet once each month to discuss problems they encounter as they advance in farm ownership. The Adult Farmer program is in the form of a ten week course of two nights per week on farm machinery main- tenance and other topics which present problems to the adult farmer. Since james Wood lies in a rural area, the Vocational Agriculture program is one of the best and largest in the school. Miss Watson's class practices table-setting. HOME ECONOMICS Homemaking education at james Wood prepares individuals for effective home living now and in the future. It aids them in solving personal and family living problems of importance to them. Classes are offered to ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students. This program provides practical on-the-job training to those who have shown a desire for such, and whose school records are above average in business skills. The students are permitted during their senior year to attend classes at the school in the morning, including a class in Office Train- ing, and to work in an office in the community in the afternoon. As a result of this office experience the students are able to do actual Work learning how to meet people, how to operate various office machines, how to dress properly for the office, how to get along with others in the office, how to file and keep records, and all other phases of office procedures. At present sixteen students are enrolled in office training who are working in thirteen various offices in the community. IO1 A44 X I D. E. students learn interview methods for job applicants. Through this program, students who do not plan to go to college after graduation learn salesmanship and business methods both in the class- room and on the job. Students are required to work an average of 540 hours a year for each of two years in the course. From the Distributive Education program, students have a wonderful opportunity to gain ideas on grooming, speech, and the correct way to apply for a job. Students can also learn about stock keeping, merchandising, and advertising. 102 .,......- ....... E W -I E U c 1' 1 m rn U c n D 1' O z I i 1 I i MR. S.G.A. means student participation, not stu- dent self-government, for all powers are delegated. It is a service organization to provide activities for the general welfare of the student body. Among the activities are two get-acquainted parties in the fall that always draw large crowds of students to dance, enjoy refreshments, and form many new friendships besides becoming acquainted with the S.G.A. officers. The S.G.A. is an integral part of the school program because it strives to obtain a wholesome school environment where students and faculty co-operate and share responsibilities. The yearly awards for homeroom Christmas door deco- rations and the many educational assemblies are ad- ditions to the school. The S.G.A. at James Wood has been used as a model for other school S.G.A. systems and is very successful in all its activities. Every James Wood student becomes a member upon registration and the S.G.A. officers are elected by the student body as the leaders of the school. Through these leaders -the S.G.A. improves the school atmosphere. THE HONOR COUNCIL The Honor Council of the S.G.A. consists of a five classes. They hear all charges against individual chairman and one representative from each of the students and recommend penalties to the principal. THE MONITOR COMMISSION Monitors are appointed by the S.G.A. to carry maintain order in the halls and the cafeteria. out all rules and regilations of the council, and to MONITOR COMMISSION Sealed, Left to Right: joan P h C 1 1 ug , aro Day, Mr. York, Neil Miller, Mrs. Hoagland, Sandra Baggeflys Abby Miller, Barbara Woore. That is the theme of the James Wood Spanish Club- Organized in 1951 to create an interest in foreign languages, the club has grown and has seen many of its ideals fulfilled. This year the constitution was revised to allow the alumni of the club full membership privileges, except that of holding office. High point of the club year was the initiation party, at- tended by members and their guests. At each club meeting a different Spanish-speaking country was studied through films and discussions. This has served as a great aid in the study of the language. Under the support and encouragement of their advisor, Mr. Funkhouser, and with the co-operation of their classmates, our safety patrol has contributed greatly to the safety of the student body and has made james Woodis safety record an enviable one. Since most students come to and go from school in county school buses, the main duty of the safety patrol is to prevent accidents on the buses by assisting the drivers and keeping order. Through their efforts and with the great amount of student co-operation, no james Wood student who rides a bus to and from school has been seriously injured during 1957 - 58. 143 MR. To achieve this, the challenge of producing a book that would be distinctively different from any yet published was placed in the hands of the journalism class, a senior honor division of the English department. The experiment paid off. Changes were made this year which will enable future Woodbine staffs to produce books which will appeal to the student body and will be recognized throughout the East as outstanding. This year linotype was introduced to provide a variety of print styles. More space was allotted to our curriculum and coverage of the school year was more complete. Of course these changes cost a great amount of money and time, but although the journalism class is small, all records for book and ad sales were broken. Handling the biggest budget in school history is Mr. jim Biddle, who continuously watched expenses and dead- lines. With the help of the advertising and sales staffs who solicited the advertisers, sent out bills and collected money, the '58 Woodbine was a financial success. Our sponsor, Mrs. Rewis, is to be congratulated for the help and encouragement she gave to her students both in work on the Woodbine and on the Wood Post. With the co-operation of our principal, faculty and the student body who this year bought over 500 books, the New Look has become a reality. It has also become a challenge to future seniors to make each year's Woodbine better than the last and by doing so to make each year at James Wood High more succesful than the last. One of its chief aims is to help the student develop his own creative powers. The other is to introduce him to the broad subject of art history and appreciation, which is based on the textbook and is culminated in a tour of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. The Art Club assisted other departments and organiza- tions many times during the school year. Making posters that publicized school functions, Christmas decorations, and helping to decorate the gymnasium for the Prom were only a few of the club's activities. Above, Coach jim Casey is lifted to the shoulders of his team as Dickie Goode leads the way through the cheering crowd at Bridgewater College. There, james Wood won its second straight District 10 championship this year. 162 - N- kg S K 'auf' jfi fx A K , 1 gi x a, W I x 1 I 1 5 I 1 if , , gil X N X , K KX E5 -,ff -f,,..
