His early educaf tion was received in the public schools of Halif fax, Middlesex and Alhemarle Counties, After he was graduated from Red Hill High School in Alhemarle County in 1921, he entered the University of Virginia and was awarded his B. S. degree in 1925. He later did graduate work in the School of Business Administration at Harvard University and was awarded his Masters Degree in Education on Septcmher I, 1939, from the University of Virginia.
