James Wciod is beginningg the Class of '51 is the beginning Senior Classg this is the beginning annual. And what could better illustrate the beginning than a baby? So, to illustrate our theme, we have a b'b d ' ' ' a y pose to typlfy the various phases of life at James Wood- Administration, Classes, Activities, and Athletics. This cherub-like infant will ca t p ure your heart as you see him on the Hrst page surrounded by the makings of an annualg on the divider page for Administration looking like a stern professorg staggering under a load of books to announce the Classes sectiong holding closely a dance program and a bouquet to illustrate the Activities sectiong and looking just like a miniature football captain on the Athletics page W h h . . . . . e ope t at our new baby, beginning its life this year, will End a home in your heart. linntents QV 'Administration 'Classes ,,,,,,,,aiiiioi. On with our studies, on with our books Try not to mind the teachers' stern looks. For it's here today and gone tomorrow Some are gay, others full of sorrow. The first thing we know June is here With all of its graduation cheer. Now we realize if we haven't before This is the time we learn the score. We will receive our diplomas with bliss Remembering our fun, and any we had to miss. There were dances, studies, and boys As were our sad moments and then our joys. It's the last strict studious year we hope The last year with our friends to study and joke. Then it's over and we realize if we haven't before That we are entering through a strange new door. We must start climbing life's stairway so steep The future ahead our past to forever keep. The future, I hope, will be prosperous and gay As the seniors of iiftyfone each go on his way Virginia Shifflette 5 Wi RHIIIZATE RIIR FIRST YEARRRRK lll FREDERICK llllll ll The people of Frederick County-you are who made this wonderful school possible, and to you we wish to dedicate this first annual. Madame Futura's crystal ball brought forth these astounding predictions. Mary Ann Mcllwee has opened a dancing studio in Winchester, teaching the unique McIlwee Method. Frances Wolford, the famous interior decorator, has just finished redecorating the White House. Hillary Brant is seen on television every Tuesday night sponsored by the Four Roses Garden Club. Dorothy Colfelt is doing charity work in Frederick County. Betty Keiter is still collecting stuffed animals. She collects them for Willie, junior now. Dolly Shifilett, who has been in the Waves for ten years, has ten more years to go before she can retire for smooth sailing. Dwain Place is manufacturing a new kind of car called The Place. His motto is The Place will go any place. Louise Walker is busy these days housekeeping. In her spare time she works in her mother's store in Kernstown. Jane Clevenger is grand winner of the Midget Auto Races held recently at Akron. Kitty and Mary Bragg work for the Mutual Life Insurance Company. More men are taking out insurance policies than ever before. Don Taylor is part owner of one of the largest farms in this part of the country. His farming partner is his little brother John. Nancy Sue Cather, Johanna Kettlewell, Pat Sutherland, Nancy Baker, and Libby Hollis are taking nurses training at john Hopkins University. The doctors there received a lecture recently for not concentrating on their work. Warren Kines is now big time operator for the B Es' M Chevrolet Company. Gardner Brannon, who is a research chemist, has made a great discoveryg it is a new kind of lipstick that is allergic to shirt collars. Phyllis Dick, Irene Russell, Helen Owens, and Lamaris Sager are office workers. They also take an active part in the Flippy Flirts Club. Charles Cochran, who is still in the Marines, is stoop-shouldered from wearing his numerous decorations and medals. Robert Renner is Kernstown's biggest car salesman. He is owner of Renner's Hotrod Haven. Mildred Kirk is still secretary to Mr. Beable. In her spare time she is bookkeeper at Hotrod Haven. Roxanne Roger's thoroughbred horse, Racing Roxy, has just captured all honors at the Kentucky Derby. Q J N Q W 19 w... 6'lHl lilllll HS The james Wood Colonels started off the season with 32 men on the squad. The coaches, Mr. Harry Caughron and Mr. Robert Tabor, had a hard job ahead of them. This was the first year at James Wood and none of the boys had ever played elevenfman football before, and some hadn't even experienced a game of football. After several weeks of hard practice, the team went to Harrisonburg, Va., on Friday, September 15, to play their first game. However, due to lack of experience and a strong passing attack by the Harrisonburg eleven, the Blue Streaks topped the Colonels 46fO. Coach Caughron still had high hopes for his team and was looking forward to the games which would follow. Friday, September 22, the Colonels journeyed to Waynesboro to play Waynesboro High School. The first quarter looked good for the Colonels when Allen Barley ran 15 yards to score the first TD for the james Wood Colonels. Due to lack of experience and a muddy field the Colonels bowed to W.H.S. 3Of6. Friday, September 29, the Colonels played their first home game at Rouss Park. The boys went into the game with high hopes. Dorsey and Franklin scored touchdowns for J.W. but failed to convert the extra point. As the game concluded, Strasburg had edged james Wood by one point, 13'12. On October 6, the Colonels traveled to Orange, Va., to play their fourth game of the sea- son. The Colonels, out to cop their first win of the season, scored first but failed to make the extra point. However, the strong Orange eleven was not to be denied. They cut loose and won 25f6. Friday, October 13, the boys were ready to play their second home game against Buena Vista. Being Friday the 13th the boys said it was their lucky day and were ready to whip their opponents. Buena Vista had two strong wins in their favor, but our boys still had high hopes, and right they should, because they trimmed the Fighting Blues, 2043. The Colonels had looked forward to their sixth game, Clarke County vs. James Wood. Rememf bering the defeat that Clarke County handed the small schools last year, the team took the field deter' mined to win. By the end of a hardffought game it was certainly fulfilled. The students, as well as the coaches and faculty, were proud of their team when they downed Clarke County 24f7. Friday, October 27, the Colonels with two straight wins under their belts, traveled to Front Royal to play the strong Randolphflviacon Academy eleven. The Cadets opened the game by scoring three times in the Hrst half. The Colonels man- aged to score once in the third. The game ended with the Cadets on the victorious side, 31f6. The i'Colonels, having only two more games left on the schedule, were out to win them, and this they did. On November 3, the squad defeated a strong Warren County eleven 2644. Bobby Franklin showed his best playing in this game along with his fellow teammates. On November 10 they topped Wilson Memorial 14f7, this saw Dick at his best and help lead his team to victory. Congratulations, boys, keep up the good work, we're proud of you. 62 'X A A ... 4 Row I, loft to right: Mr, Canglwron, Brown, Barley. Franklin. Gillcspic, Vvlluitc. The members of the Annual Staff sinf cerely hope that this first edition of the Wcuodhine will serve to recapture with words and pictures the events of the past year. We hope that as you turned the pages of this annual you will have renewed old acquaintances and that it will present a part of the early history of our school from 1950 to 1951.
