The Firefly Festival always attracts Riley thespians and musicians Being a chorus member in Annie Get Your Gun helped me gain experience in acting and dancing, stated senior Paige Laderer. The 4-H fair is a popular place to be during the summer. It ' s a great place to see all your friends from school, says junior Melanie Freitag. Hoping For Good Times When the Riley swimmers started the summer season, they hoped to have a successful summer and hoped to Improve their times, but more than that they hoped for a suc- cessful swim season at Riley. Riley swimmers competed for dif- ferent teams and against other Riley swimmers. Joe Koch ' 90 received 6th place in the M.A.P.S.C. finals at Northwood high school. Joe added, During the race I feared not to place in the top 10. About the same time at the Y.M.C.A. swimming and diving Championship, Steve Wosick ' 90 broke the 400 i.M. record with his 1st place victory with the time of 4:51.95. Wosick said, I feared that I would die in the race! Wosick also won the 800 freestyle. He help re- ceive 3rd place in the 800 free relay with John Cesh ' 88, Karl Peterson ' 88 and Clark Hoover ' 90. Keeping In Touch Seeing friends for the first time at the end of summer is exciting and dreadful. Will my friends still like me? Have they changed? I feared that I would grow apart from my friends during the sum- mer, commented Sue Pethe ' 89. Maintaining good friendships means staying in touch with your friends over the summer. Riley stu- dents do this by going to the mall, talking on the phone, or even driv- ing around and seeing people. Al- though hopes and fears vary from person to person, one thing will al- ways remain the same: there will always be friendship among the Riley High students. Right: Sophomores Heather Leippert, Lara Vitale, Jennifer Dolce, and Jaclcie Solmos keep in touch over the summer by attend- ing football games. 10 SumiiMr Above: Vianda Hill, ' 88 and Stephanie Stokes ' 88 enjoy cheering enthusiastically at the foot ball game. Setting The Standards Many feelings that can be catego- rized as hopes and fears are shared at the first football game. The fans are eager to socialize with their old friends. Members of the band are nervous about performing for the stu- dent body. But more importantly are the feelings of the players. After all they are the ones that earned the 28- 20 victory that will be recorded as the 50th anniversary win against Washington. Many feel that this game sets the standards for the rest of the season. When asked if the game had any special meaning, Steve Cook 89 ' replied, I tried to forget that it was the anniversary game at stake and focused on play- ing to the best of my ability. Right: Riley fans visually show their excite- ment during the first football game. Far right: Peter Szaday 88 ' shows that he en- joys being a part of the marching band. For one the hope came true and for the remaining eleven, the fears dissolved. September 25 was a very special date for twelve senior girls. During the day, the Homecoming court en- joyed lunch with Mr. Oldham, and was presented to the student body at the pep assembly. Then that night, the court members and their escorts strolled onto the football field, each with a proud smile. After everyone had been introduced, Jennifer Juday sparkled as Penny Polsgrove, former Queen, placed the crown on her head. I was shocked to hear my name and I was really surprised, stated Jennifer. The members of the court were Kim Bailey, Sarah Black, Camille Coddens, Tara Harris, Sara Herczeg, Vianda Hill, Jennifer Juday, Jennifer Knight, Sheryl Lynch, Nicole Medich, Wendy Medich, and Nora Weldy. Each of them were honored to repre- sent the senior class and will cherish the memories for many years to come. Below: Sharing a special moment while wait- ing for half time is Sara Herczeg ' 88 with Timo- thy Wallace, ' 00- With so many different styles it has be- come hard to distinguish fad from fashion. While fads die out fashions are reborn, often taking new shapes and colors. The mini-skirts and crew-cuts which are remi- niscent of the 50 ' s and 60 ' s seem to be back. Although a variety of changes have been made the roots are plainly visible. Many of us dress with the hope of fitting in because we possess the fear of stand- ing out in the crowd. Some of us adopt a certain style and stick with it because it Is a means of self- expression. While others of us just tend to go with the flow, either way fashion plays an important role in our society. One of the keys to fashion is self-perception, without that one wouldn ' t hove an identi- ty of their own. v.. iATLfdr Riley Spirit: Keep The Tradition Aiive Riley spirit, it ' s a unique blend of pep, enthusiasm, and energy. Home- coming, spirit weeit, and Ugiy Cou- ples are Just a few of the events that the student body, as well as faculty, participate in. Our Homecoming Court represented Riley ' s finest guys, selected by the students. Spirit Weeic became complete with paja- ma day, toga day, and the tradition- ally popular — beach day. The staff Is made up mainly of many new- comers who are enthusiastic and willing to worl . Shari Orisich stated I hope we will continue the tradition of having the best yearbook In the city. Amy Miller added My biggest fear is not meeting deadlines. In order to make this yearbook full of memories and good times, dead- lines do have to be met. Yearbook 81 Warmth And This year the Award Winning Riley Thespians presented one of their most demanding dramas ever. James Reach created the play Da- vid and Lisa but through the acting of over twenty actors and actresses its performance became a true reali ty. The fall play dealt with the trials of mentally disturbed adolescents and focused o n their strengths and fears. As a first year performer, Jim Meiss ' 89, commented that, The way in which all of the performers can adapt to such complex roles and be so convincing is really amazing. In addition Jane Longnecker ' 88, Tim Tomlinson ' 88, Philip Sever ' 88, and Danny Goldwin ' 89, all agree that the time that they shared at re- hersals and performance nights cre- ated a feeling of warmth and friend- ship among the entire cast. In order to earn money and gain valuable experience, many Riley stu- dents hold jobs at local businesses while they attend school. A lot of teenagers feel that holding a job is important because it teaches one to allocate their time as well as budget their money. Many students have ex- pensive hobbies. States Matt Soren- son ' 88, You have to pay to play. Some students are able to gain employment In a place that will help them with their college majors or, if not planning to attend college, with their occupations directly out of high school. The Wildcats start off in the summer with all day practices with only one short break for lunch. When we all eat together, stated captain Robert Szczechowski, we are building the feel- ing of a family among us, which helps us play together as a team. Fall proc. tices aren ' t as hard, stated captain John Riddle ' 88, but they are cold, cold, cold. Most all the players share one com- mon fear. That is the fear of getting in- jured. Stated Robert Szczechowski ' 88, I fear getting injured and having to sit on the sidelines unable to help my team. Along with fears many have hopes. My hope is to win sectionals and beat the current rushing record. stated Senior Roy White. Through the good and bad the Wild- cats never give up. They play as a team to be the best they can be. The intensity at prac- tice and extra effort of the team has paid off. The fans were given the ex- perience of exciting rallies and tre- mendous comebacks, yet what do they fear? Being hurt or injured while in a game, remarked junior captain Melanle Freitag. The biggest event of the season was finishing second in the section- als. This year was also the best team Coach Morningstar has coached at Riley. We are a very close team; there is not just one outstanding player, we all contributed to the teams great year. Added Todd Bauer ' 88. This year ' s team is really special, I ' m glad to have been a part of it, re- marked Doug Luczkowski ' 88. Traditions And Emotions The Riley Swim Team has hod many sectional wins and has cap- tured several state titles, and there seems to be no stopping them. This is due to the dedication, strength and discipline that each swimmer puts torth. The main idea that is put behind the swim team is success and work- ing hard to achieve goals. It is not whether the team wins or loses, it is how they swim, both individually and as a whole. Each swimmer wants to develop himself to his fullest poten- tial. Success is developing your full potential, states Coach Dunlap. The hopes and fears among the team members are basically the same. The fear is failure and the hope is to meet the goal that was set at the beginning of the season, states Craig Fox ' 89. Each race is packed with emotion, and this is dis- played throughout each meet. As all Riley students are able to see, the team is a close unit and is always able to count on for success. This is one tradition that won ' t change with the years. Right: Riley swimmer Craig Fox ' 88 gets a good start at a tiome meet. In the minds of many, they were expected to carry on the record that was produced during the previous season. But Ihe question that resulted was whether or not the team as a whole unit werer mentally strong. Darnell Evans ' 88 agrees that the team possesses this quality. The reason being is that whenever a problem arises among the team we tal e time to work it out before a practice in order to work with each other in a more positive way. Throughout the season the team focused on accomplishments attained during the season. One such victory was the Adams contest in which Riley was awarded a trophy. Basketball is a team sport that requires total cooperation. With the combination of each players skill and strength it was inev- itable to produce a beneficial season in cer- tain aspects , commented Tracey Can- nady. When asked what the future holds for the wildcats Coach Robert Berger replied, The past season has been one of rebuild- ing and as a result of that rebuilding we as a team have built a firm base for future success. Recapturing The Spirit Early in the year, Head Coach Pols- grove and assistant coach Colleen Doyle were looking for a good sea- son with a lot of expectations. Unfortunately the girls came out with a 10 win and a disappointing 10 loss season. The second round of section- als ended their season as they were beat out in the second round by La Salle, with a score of 44 to 43. Becky Zumbrum had the record for the most assists in one season, set by Cindy Miller in 1977 of 67 assists. Becky achieved a total of 77 In this season. Nora Weldy had the best single season free throw average of 68.8%. Sheryl Lynch achieved 388 points to beat out the record of 362 points set in 1985 by Sandy Lewis. Coach Ciro Haraguchi believes the girls ' soccer team has great poten- tial to become a winning team in the near future. A win lllce that, stated Jeff Franko ' 89, is what motivated us to do well the rest of the season. Being a member of the Wildcat wrestlers Is a privilege as well as a challenge of your mind and your body, stated Chris IVIese- car ' 89. Underclassmen are just as impor- tant as the upper class this year, with sophomore Tony Bailey losing only one match to Penn. The team has brought home many trophies and hope to continue bringing them home. The national topic debated this year deals with the current U.S. poli- cy for Latin America. The topic is hard to defend sometimes because it is very broad, Stated Ken Koch ' 89. Many students fear debating ne- gativily on this topic. The Pride Of The South Side ' ' Imagine a school with no spirit. No cheerleaders, no pom pon squads, and no pep assembles. No pep assemblies! Riley is known for showing its spirit at games, sectionals, and especially at pep assemblies. Whether we ' re patron- izing a home game or celebrating a ri- val victory, assemblies are a tradition- al part of Wildcat history. Even twenty years from now, give me an ' R, ' will send a surge of spirit in each of us. We ' ll remember the energetic pom routines, the rhythmic cheers, and the spontan- aeity of the Senior section. Our pep assemblies have included everything from plaques to banners to bananas. Our outrageous games with faculty and athletes encouraged a bit of laughter and craziness in everyone. Keep the tradition, keep the spirit, and Riley will always be the pride of the South Side. They bring discipline into the school and strive to make for a positive edu- cational environment. It is difficult for the students to real- ize the hard work and long hours necessary for this job, and it is even more difficult for the students to ap- preciate It. What would Riley be without our principals? One Riley student states, Without them, this school would be total chaos! You can recognize our head princi- pal, Algie Oldham, by his friendly smile. You see him between classes greeting students and getting to know everyone. Assistant principals JoAnn Fox and George McCullough are seen making occasional visits to the dif- ferent classes here at Riley. Freshman Josh Volheim states, The principals here are the nicest I ' ve ever met! Although some stu- dents think the principals are too tough, the majority are satisfied. Wilson Better Prepared To Fulfill Hopes The advanced technology of our society has greatly influenced the Math and Computer fields. Many classes here at Riley, such as Alge- bra, Geometry, Algebra Trig, Calcu- lus and Computer Programming help students in their preparation for pos- sible careers using their knowledge in these areas. Joel Sumner states I hope to have a career in Computer Programming . Another stu-ex- presses her feelings by stating I feel that these classes prepare us for col- lege or any type of carrer we choose. Even if the career doesn ' t deal with business, it is good training and knowledge. , state Tara Harris ' 88. With the help of Riley ' s Math and Computer departments, students have the opportunity to be better prepared to fulfill their hopes and dreams. Expanding Minds Reading, vocabulary, and discus- sion. These three basics provide the foundation for English at Riley. Reading expands our minds and opens doors to worlds of love, hate, war, and death, while vocabulary allows us to use lan- guage to define our innermost emo- tions and feelings. Through discussion we broaden our perspectives and gain new and powerful ideas. We can better understand our assignments, papers and novels through discussion, be it in class or simply between student and teacher. Without these tools of English we are expressionless beings. Riley ' s English Department prepares not only for col- lege but provides the opportunity to learn a practical use for English in the future. Top Right: J.J. You haven ' t eaten for three days, but your squadron needs your leader- ship and keen firing eye. We are not in Vietnam or Nicaragua, but in France during the Second World War. History can be exciting if we put ourselves in the place of our fore- fathers. Psychology, Economics, and Government aii contribute to our So- cial Studies department. By learning about our history, our governments, and our minds, we learn about life and how to live it. Bottom Left: Carrie Pugti ' ' 89 Is determined to complete tier History assignment. Bottom Right: Laron McGee ' 88 proudly dis- plays the symbols of our freedom; the flag and Constitution. Expanding Our Understanding Of Tlie Worid The Foreign Languages at Riley are a great experience for everyone who talces one or more of the lan- guages offered: French, German, Spanish, or Latin. The classes study not only the language, but also the various areas of culture: foods, dress, and customs. There are many hopes and fears which accompany the study of a For- eign Language. Each student hopes to learn the verb conjugations, vo- cabulary words, and grammar. Some of the fears are the final exam, and teachers who ask that only the target language be spoken in the classroom. Why is Foreign Language impor- tant? Foreign Languages are the basis for understanding ourselves and other peoples of the world, says Mr. Stebbins, Latin teacher. Overall, The Foreign Language De- partment at Riley offers various ex- periences that are valuable to each student in some way. ' Irla 1-= :j Abilities Many students are taking Industri- al Arts at Rile y. You can gain special abilities by taking programs such as Drafting, Wood Shop, Auto Shop, Printing, Electronics, Robotics, and Machine Shop. Drafting is very Important to future architects and engineers. Wood Shop helps students to be- come good carpenters and crafts- men, while helping you to build and repair. Dennis Murphy ' 89 stated, Draft- ing helps you to learn the basics of designing layouts of buildings and machinery. He also added his hope and his fear of Industrial Arts. My hope is to become an engineer in college; and with a teacher like Mr. Besinger, there are no fears. Top left: Chris Gregory works diligently In electronics. Industrial Arts 105 Many Useful Programs The Home Economics Department at Riley High School offers many use- ful programs for Riley students. One of these programs is Child Develop- ment — where students are taught about the responsibilities of having children. Sara Danch ' 90 comments Child Development is interesting and enjoyable. Some of the other classes offered are: Foods and Nutrition — in which students learn about the values of certain foods and how to prepare them, Family Relations, and Clothes and Textiles — where sewing and knitting are taught. Home Economics instructor Wilma Harris stated: This is the best year for Home economics. Students are more appreciative of what they are being taught. With all the excellent teaching staff and the stu- dents cooperation this year has been very successful. Andy Mihait (88 ' ) said Health was one experi- ence I ' ll never forget. You learn many different emergency tech- niques in health so maybe someday you can save a life. Mr. Gartee said I am extremely pleased with the students in Phy Ed this year. One Of The Best In Town The Riley Science department ot- ters a wide variety of classes to choose trom including Biology, Physi- cal and Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy. Atomic structures and chemical equations are some of the topics Chemistry students explore. One Ril- ey sophomore stated, I fear chemis- try from just looking at my brother ' s Chemistry book. All those big prob- lemsl The biology classes are involved in studying ttie process of photosynthe- sis, mitosis, and the study of evolu- tion. Freshman Misti Buti says she fears having to disect a pig. I ' d like to study it, but I ' m afraid I might get sick just looking at it! In physics, the students study nu- clear energy, forces, motion, and electricity among many other sub- jects. With all this to offer, the Riley science department is one of the best in town, especially with the great teaching staff! Along with these we have been planning out our future dreams. We all hope to ac- complish these with the education and self pride that the Riley Faculty has given us. Each one of us is an individual, but when we come together In unity, we hold a strong promise for the future. Although we all will be going in our own seperate ways, the memories and friendships will be cherished for a lifetime. Even though the memories consist of football games and pep assemblies, and the hoaxs pulled on our teachers, we feel that we gained important knowledge pertaining to education as well as life in general. As we are handed our diplomas on June 5, 1988, we will have mixed emotions, including anxiety, fear, and happiness. But this day is the beginning of a new life for all of us. i ( od S R Sh HH i- WM ' i t HaM Hfl V l L m flfi« ! i ' iM« ' H!l ' ,fiIMl.W ' H ■ K li !?Hll wKBm 3 n K ' Mm 1 Walter Aberegg, Kenneth L. When we first came to school we feared we would get lost, we would be picked on, and that the rumors about our teachers told by upper classmen were true. We now fear we won ' t get good grades and the class- es here will be much harder than 8th grade. Another fear that many fresh- men boys have is that the 200 pound Seniors won ' t leave them alone and the girls fear the same senior won ' t be their boyfriends. The freshmen also have many hopes. We hope that we will achieve as much as we can. Most of all we, the freshmen hope for success at this school and for the rest of our lives. Zusman, Rochell e 155 Throughout our lives, we all devel- op hopes and fears. But many of these seem to develop throughout the four years which are spent In high school. Here at RIley, the hopes seem to be basically the same. These are to graduate, have close friends and to be successful. But the yearbook staff members seem to have additional, uncommon hopes: to meet deadlines, write good copy and to virtually get the finished prod- uct back to Riley on time. The fears that seem to exist are the fear of fail- ing a class, of not graduating and the fear of not being accepted. For Hoo- sier Poet staff members, the most definite fear is not meeting deadlines. This yearbook Is being dedicated to the class of 1988 because each and every member has contributed in some way to our theme of Hopes and Fears. Every student has a hope and a fear, but the seniors are ready to experience the true definitions of these words. As Co-Editors of this yearbook, we would like to thank the staff mi bers, the student body and the foi ty. Each and every one of you I played an important role in the ( duction of this edition of the Hoo Poet. As you close this book, we h that you are not closing your mint the memories that derived from i periences at Riley. They all hoU great deal of value and importar exoesa cop -qs Ss?-}.: JtaU
