This, you poor nervous scholar, is what you have been looking forward to all summer. After sufFerinq through those all-night parties at the lake, the long days at Tower Hill, (and those dates after the dance when you could drive through Azar ' s with the top down and then go for a long ride in the country). Summer can sure be dull, you tell your- self as you pack your swim suit and noseplugs away for the winter. You have nothing to do but sleep till twelve, then spend the afternoon at the pool or mooch a ride to the lake. Your biggest problems are the decisions you have to make. Should I get up at noon or one o ' clock? Whose car are we taking today? Whom should I ask to the dance next week? Do we go to Waldo ' s party or Smiley ' s place? Well, that ' s all over now. You can settle down to the peace and tranquility of school life. As you step in the front door, Mr. C. grinds your cigarette out under his heel, and our new leader begins his reign. You rise at six to be at your early morning class. At noon the smiling cafeteria workers speed you on your way with a pat on the wallet and the start of a peptic ulcer. At 3:15 you are hustled out of the old Alma Mater and sent home with more books than the Li- brary of Congress ever dreamed of. You give up trying to figure out why Macbeth bumped off Banquo and not Fleance, and you hit the sack wondering if maybe the boredom of summer was such a bad deal after all. This silhouette of to school. chers, too, ore bock dge Is nol found in books Riley ' s New Principal, Mr. Grouse, Is A Man Of Impressive is tne word that most clearly describes the experience and record of our new principal, Howard L. Crouse. His B.S. degree from Purdue Uni- versity and his Master ' s in that same field from Indi- ana first prepared Mr. Crouse for his career as a sci- ence teacher. After a five-year stint in the army dur- ing World War 11, he returned to civilian life to become principal of the Hartford, Indiana, Junior- Senior High School until 1949. Promotions to contin- ually larger high schools such as Frankfort High and most recently Connersville High School have grad- ually brought Mr. Crouse to Riley. Our principal is as busy civically as he has been professionally. He is currently serving as President of the Indiana Association of Junior and Senior High Schools and is also an active member of such organi- zations as North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Rotary Club. Mr. Crouse has been well-pleased with the co-oper- eration he has received since coming to Riley. He realizes the importance of becoming better ac- quainted with the student body and has been trying to do so by presiding over assemblies and pep ral- lies and by being in the school corridors between classes. Also, his door is open to any student who may desire an interview with the principal. Recently there has been much controversy on the im- portance of extracurricular activities in school. Mr. Crouse feels that these clubs do have a definite place in high school, but should be considered sec- ondary to school work. The basic purpose of school is to afford an education in the subjects; activities are part of this, but work that results in the classroom is of number one importance. I Mr. Crouse enjoys a quick trip ' round the world os Rozia Forooqi, Riley ' s exchang student, points out her native land of Pakistan to Sharon Csernits and Becky Newhard. The New Cafeteria Fa There Are New Additions To IVIatcli Yes the new school isn ' t all Hard knocks and frustration. It must keep in tune with changes in the modern world, and while there may be danger in falling plaster and an occas- ional boltless door, Riley has acquired sev- eral new conveniences worthy of mention. They are the new electronics lab which graces our industrial arts department, the modern steam tables which facilitate the distribution of the daily ration in Riley ' s cafeteria lines, the electronic suds-makers which fade football jerseys and shrink socks, and the radiation lab emitting its benevolent rays to all fascinated advanced biology students. Gripes are heard daily in the halls of the Alma Mater, but only a few pet peeves con- cerning improvements are satisfied. Grad- ually Riley moves ahead, and another year sees several worthwhile additions. A New School Spirit Fall The Riley-Washington Bonfire was a joyful affair. Pom Solbrig clings to her crown and Sandy Lorincz smiles happily as So Yoder is crowned football queen by Dove Hendrix. Frames Football Festivities y- ' - B mm morning sho af Riley High. A smiling court attends the queen. Sue Barnfield, Sharon Csernits, and NIta Hawley ride atop their open-air carriage at the Riley-Washintgon half-time ceremonies. Our courageous football captains, Paul Nelson and Dave Hendrix, risk life and limb to get the Wash- ington-Riley Roundup off to a good start. Every girl ' s dream . . : . to be a queen. Solly Yoder bears her crown proudly as she is escorted off the field by Dave Izdepski. How does a queen get to be a queen? Each senior homeroom nominates two girls to run for court. There is uniform campaigning, and a picture of each girl is put up in the halls. A week after the homeroom nominations, the entire student body votes to elect the court. A final election decides who is to be QUEENI 13 ' Enthusiasm Carries The energy which forms the soul of Riley is its spirit. We wonder sometimes if there really is any, but when we stand in a deserted hall, we can feel a kind of magic present all around us. In the half- worn wax, the solid bricks, and the air itself, there is a silent voice that says Chin up; keep smiling. Riley ' s life has rarely been one of perfect victory, and the spirit sometimes becomes hidden. But it is never lost. In oil the pageantry of human existence. SUE McCURDY NANCY POSTLE MARSHA PERKINS CHAR MOMINEE SANDY GARBACZ On Motto, Lude Ludum the determination to succeed has never had a better example than the Wildcats who lose but keep fight- ing toward a winning end. And they will find that end. For somewhere there is a place where the mighty motto LUDE LUDUM! issues from the Jips of every student, and the purple and gold march on toward greater victories for each tomorrow. A New Council Influences Student Life The Riley Student Council has undergone a complete reorganization this year. Now representatives at large are elected by each of the four classes to form a council of twenty-six besides the four officers. With the aid of sponsor Mr. Morrison, the coun- cil has carried out a full schedule of activi- ties including an A.F.S. drive, the football and basketball coronations, and the early ordering of class rings for juniors. Honored by being asked to send a delegate to the national convention, the council looks for- ward to better relationships between the faculty and student body. The world is sometimes surprised at the wisdom of its youth. Student Council officers are glad to better international relations with some con- crete help. Becky Newhard, our A.F.S. student to Sweden, accepts a check from Sharon Csernits, president. Looking on are Judy Arch, secretary, and Curt Woolley, vice-president. Dean Brown Is now in New Zealand on the A.F.S. program. Presidents on parodel The P.T.A. invited the presidents of several school organizations to meet for o panel discussion. The presidents are: Jim Hamilton, Senior Class; Chuck Klickok, Booster Club; John Byers, National Honor Society; Sharon Csernits, Student Council; Jon Noce, Monogram Club; and Steve Lester, Junior Class. These are the middle men . The Student Council represen- tatives are selected from all four classes to better relationships between the faculty and student body. 16 Oi ' Ike K v t nnm sfydent isiia Fgfci « ' Knowing the hectic confusion of last minute changes, the editorial staff of the Hi- Tlmes marvels at the finished paper (or rather that It is finished at all I) Gathered around Editor-in-chief Anne Messerly are Mrs. Farabaugh the advisor ond More Cormichoel the sports editor, as well as JIM Swanson, second page editor, Susan May and Tom Holmes, third page editors; and Sue Sweltzer and Becky Newhord, first page editors. from Parkistan israelii girl to slay ley for a yea? scIisqI psltlen nou They ' ll give you the buslnessi Discussing a new approach to pep up business, the staff gives its attention to Advertising Manager Allen Lincoln. January Resolutions Produce Studying is a full-time job for conscientious Riley- ites. Whether in a quiet room or on a busy tele- phone, verbals, tangents, and neuroses are the standard terms of scrutinizing scholars. The study hall, soon to disappear from Riley life, main- tains a steady whirr of mental gears until the heavy student eyelids begin to overpower the student determinism. Study, Study, Study The library carries on a lively business in all types of reference reading and also serves as a place for peaceful skimming through the lighter side of cur- rent and classical literature. And oh! those never- to-be-forgotten days before finals ... on to a less serious version . . . 20 With feet propped up on desk , the back-row flunkie nonchalantly flips his gum wrapper toward the wastebosket in the front of the room. He thumbs through his collection of comic books, Mad magazine, etc., and yawns at the world in gen- eral. The semester wears on. With the ominous threat of final exams looming before him, beads of cold sweat appear on his forehead as his ever-present grin begins to waver. As he steps into the room on the day before finals, his dusty, mold-encrusted textbook is clutched in his sweaty paw. The chair rests on all four legs for a change, as he feverishly scribbles on scraps of paper the knowledge of a semester, and he laboriously assem- bles a set of beautiful crib notes. Research for my term paper? ' Course not, never do today wtict you can do tomorrow for something may occur to make you regret your premature move. These inventive students (names v ithheld on request) experiment v ith their new ■T ' ' --. « method of cramming for finals ... bridge anyone? Note proper position for homework: back straight, knees bent feet flat down. After all it doesn ' t soy which side should b up! The next day a sly grin cracks his otherwise sleep-robbed countenance as he hunches over his paper like a miser examining his gold. By now the smile is beginning to droop at the corners as he reads down the list of questions searching for one he has answers for. His jaw hangs loosely in its sockets, and his wrinkled, dripping brow indi- cates our hero is a bit unsure of his performance. After masticating two pencils and seven fingernails, emitting a few groans, and scratching his skull until dandruff begins to obscure his blank test paper, another small-time cribster hits the dust. In the back rows of many classrooms this semes- ter we see small, crumpled, sobbing figures trying to figure out where their well-planned schemes went awry. 21 For The Final Accounting I hate to bother you, sir, but if you have c moment to spare, I ' d like to talk to you about my grade. It ' s just that I feel I did more this semester than you gave me credit for. My final? That bad, huh? But I do feel my work during the semester was very good. Kinda good? Above average? That bad, huh? 22 Well, anyway, I believe homework should be very important in determining the final grade, and . . . I did not! I admit we did work together on some assign- ments, but I would never copy . . . By the way, what was my homework average? Oh — I see. But still, my class participation was exceptional. Oh, so you thought so too. You know I ' m glad you noticed that because I worked very . . . You didn ' t mean that kind of participation? Well, I can easily understand why you might feel that way ... I did mess around a little in the beginning, but I settled down, oh yes, I settled down. I really learned a lot from this class, sir. I learned to appreciate a good teacher like you so much. Speech development is one of the many extras at Riley. . ookworming is allowed in the quiet reserve of Riley ' s library. The emphasis in high school is leaning more and more toward higher education. Courses are not only college preparatory but also college level. Advanced courses have become prominent and nev subjects are being added every year. The English department has not been standing idly by while the world moves on. It has, in fact, led the school by encouraging contests, new methods of teaching, and new courses. The developmental reading course, open to 200 of the more advanced readers in the junior class, is being taught by Mr. Biiby. Its purpose is to help the better readers to become still more proficient. The modern trend is carried on by the library as it responds to demand by opening a paperback section to the student body and encouraging the use of the library for reference material. Other de- partments have contributed many helpful reference books on the sciences, mathematics, and literature. All of these advances point out the desire of the school to reach new levels of education and prepare students to continue their studies in college. It is becom- ing increasingly important in today ' s chaotic world that the minds of men be brought together in a working harmony, and language is the key which can unlock this door to better relationships. Riley ' s foreign language department keeps this in mind and offers three years of study in Latin, French, Spanish, and German. In his chosen language area, the stu- dent is encouraged to learn the significant develop- ments and achievements of the people who inhabit the native country of that language. Latin includes supplementary work in the classic history of Greece and Rome, while the modern languages utilize films and personal contact through penpals. Future de- velopments include the addition of laboratories to supplement the department ' s work. students of Spanish learn more than just language structure for knowl- edge of culture adds interest to modern language courses. Mr. Clayton, I ' d like you to take a look at my physics project. The program of studies in science has been developed over the years to serve all of the stu- dents. This year at Riley, the science department has resisted wholesale changes merely for the sake of change. While many of the schools in the country are watering down their courses to make them new and improved, Riley has maintained its tradi- tional pattern of strict discipline. The curriculum is geared to the Atomic Age with the emphasis on the newest theories. The courses of study have become more com- prehensive because of the nature and content of the material. This year the biology rooms were equipped with overhead projectors, micro-projectors, and re- corders. These devices add to the efficiency of the course in giving the students more visual aids. Looking into the future, Riley hopes to have two new semi-microchemistry laboratories, and a new physics laboratory. Precise techniques corry Charles Horvath and Sue McCurdy through this chemistry demonstration. The great changes in the world have not gone unno- ticed in the math department at Riley. In an endeavor to keep pace with the modern world new equipment has been added: instructor ' s slide rules, miniature computers, a kit for the study of statistics, new additions to our paperback collection which helps fill out our mathematics library. Along with this, the department has added a course in analytical geometry in the spring semester. Some anticipated improvements for the future are the combining of courses in Geometry II and Algebra ill in the second semester of the sophomore year. This, along with the combining of solid geometry, trigonometry, and analyt- ical geometry into one course in the senior year, would en- able the student to take calculus in the spring semester of the senior year. United States and world history courses help him to evaluate the past in order to plan for the future of his country and humanity. Civics, sociology, economics, and government courses teach him about the people and forces in his environment and v hat he must do to effectively deal v ith them. Next year, the social studies department hopes to initiate a course in international relations. This class will give the student a more intensive look at the broad field of world culture and diplomacy. The trend towards humani- ties is increasing steadily, and Riley social studies curricu- lum is going to meet the needs of a growing civilization, to prepare us to meet the challenge of democracy. The new power tools in the wood and machine shops help to acquaint the student with the advances in mechaniza- tion. The remodeled mechanical drawing room is another example of the efFort to keep pace with the advancing world. Probably the most noticeable improvement in the vocational de- partment is the electronics lab which has been added this year under the supervision of Mr. Bad- ger. There are four courses offered leading from basic fundamentals to advanced theory. The new equipment is excellent and the courses fascinating. Their summer vacati on is cut short by the start of football practice in mid-August. They arrive early in the morning when the dew is on the grass and stare dumbly at each other through red, throbbing, blood-shot eyes which constantly remind them of their last night of freedom which they had ushered out so gayly only a few hours before. They receive their clean, but dusty whites, and climb into their stiff and creaking armor. As they trot reluctantly onto the grassy grid, they pass the smiling members of the cross country and tennis teams who are leaning non- chalantly upon the fence. Among a torrent of catcalls and jeers the boys prepare to mold themselves into a team. After the season the boys struggle on to wrestling or basketball, and, with the same determination, sac- rifice to make the team. The wrestlers struggle thru the long practices, finger-tip pushups, and star- vation diets to have their chance in the next meet. The dribblers bounce around the gym and practice long shots, lay-ups, free throws, and how to fake the opponent out of his shoelaces, so that they may have the chance to pull out some of the splinters and play in the big game. Then, along with the budding trees and emerging groundhogs, the Riley harriers dust off the spikes and hurdles in the hopes of a successful season. Spring heralds the start of a new track season and starts the divot-diggers swinging the old 5 irons in the back yards around town. Finally the apple tossers start warming up the old soup bone and dusting off home plate for the first game. At the close of the baseball season they pack the suits away in moth balls and reflect upon their past year of glory — the winning touchdown, breaking the high-jump record, the close game, and the double play. They sorrowfully pack away the heat lamps, lina- ment, heat packs, and splints for the summer. Despite the charley horses , sprained ankles, blis- ters, and stiff backs, the boys will be back the next year ready for the same old band-aid and iodine treatment. We say good-by to the boys as they reflect sorrow- fully upon the all night card parties, the late date after the Prom, and the day they skipped school and didn ' t get caught. The 1961 edition of the Riley football team again completed the season with a 2-7 won-lost record, but this time in a more spectacular fashion than previously as they won the opening and closing games of the season. Outstanding on the team was quarterback Paul Nelson who rated honorable mention on the South Bend Tribune team. Also outstanding was center Dave Hendrix, a four year regular, who was picked as an all-state center by the Associated Press and was also named to the Ail-American high school team! The Wildcats opened on a victorious note by de- feating arch-rival Adams 19-12. The score was not a true indication of the actual situation as the Eagles were completely outmanned. In the Wash- ington contest (a carbon copy of the 1960 game), we lost 26-14 to the powerful Conference champs, after leading in the third quarter 14-13. Our Wild- cats fell to crosstown rival Central in the third game by a 21-14 count. Only in the last quarter did the powerful Bears pull away to win by the slim one touchdown margin. St. Joe downed the Wildcats on a muddy School Field as they scored a touchdown and a safety and held on to win 9-6. Then Riley territory was invaded by the highly touted Elkhart Blue Blazers, who barely escaped with a victory by 14-7. In the sixth game Riley hit rock bottom as they fell to lowly Goshen 7-0. As time ran out in the first half, a lineman from Goshen picked up a Riley fumble and ran for the score. Next Riley fell to grossly over-rated Mishawaka by only two touchdowns 13-0. The Wildcats ran their loss streak to seven games in Michigan City as the Red Devils scored three quick touchdowns in the second quarter and held the Riley offense In the second half to win 20-0. In the last game of the season, the Wildcats, determined to break their four game scoring drought and salvage a little glory, powdered the Fort Wayne North squad 20-0. Although this season was not successful as far as the record is concerned, it was successful in other ways. Much experience was gained by the under classmen and if one looks at the record over the past four years it can be seen thot football is on the upswing at Riley. 72 Freshmen Show Great Promise Freshman football record promises a brighter future for Riley. M The Wildcat varsity basketball team closed the season with a final record of eight wins and thirteen losses, including a loss to Washington in the Sectional, 61-62 in over-time. At times the team really showed a lot of class, and at other times, they gave the opposite impression. This inconsistency was the key factor in dropping the Wildcats below the .500 mark. They lost to such teams as Lakeville, Rensselaer, Go- shen and Mishawaka. They also dropped a game to Wash- ington after beating them earlier by ten points. The team did have its moments of glory, however. One was beating La- Porte after losing to them before. Another was the walloping of Si. Joe by a score of 77-50. Yet another was the 71-37 slaughter of Washington-Clay, after a loss to them last year. The victory over Washington was a terrific one. Coming back from a halftime deficit of eleven points, Riley ' s forty point second half was too much, as the Panth ers came out on the short end, 58-48. Playing at forwards this year were John Byers and Jim Hamilton. They were helpful in getting rebounds and also Joe Kramer, Bill Adams, Dick Newport, Woody Bradford, Chuck Hohman, Ted Northern, Jim Hamilton, John Byers. Ends With 8-12 Record could score baskets in the clutch. Junior center Ted Northern paced the Riley attack this season, averaging 1 2.3 points per game, and snatching over 250 rebounds. Northern look- ed real good at times, especially on defense. Next year he should be a real top-notch center for coach Lennie Rzezew- skl. Playing at the guard posts were Woody Bradford and sophomore Joe Kramer. These two boys played very steady ball, and could maneuver and shoot very well. Filling in very capably were Jim Jewell and Jim Glick, as they could come into the game most any time and score a few quick baskets. This year was another chapter in the history of Riley ' s los- ing seasons. But it was not a total loss in any sense of the word. Rather, the teams that played Riley had to be up for the game, because if they weren ' t, they were beaten. By next year, the underclassmen on the squad should de- velop into a fine team, and they should start Riley back onto the winning trail. Basketball coach Lennie Rz principal Noble I. The B-Team was unusual this year in that there was only one freshman on the squad, all the rest being sophomores, and no juniors. John Nelson was the freshman and gave a good account of himself, as he averaged nearly ten points a game. Carl Frank, although short on stature, was long on ability as he was the leading scorer five different times. Milt Pittman and John Walz gave a fine display of the kind of basketball Riley can expect from this B-Team, as they move up to the varsity next year, to fill the boots of this year ' s seniors. There were, however, such debacles as the Washington game, where the score was 51- 27, and Central, where the score was 41-27. BACK ROW, Left to Right: Al Boulanger, Skip Helm. Again Successful Through the efForts of Captain Jim Jewell and his five fine teammates, the golf team enjoyed an admirable 7-4-1 season. Returning lettermen were Jim Jewell and Bob Beck. Other up and coming hopefuls were Jim Peterson and Dwight Skip Helm. One of the highlights of the season was winning over Mishawaka in the later part of the season after losing to them previously in the season. The team captured second place in the Lake Hills Invitational and the Laporte Invitational acquiring 341 and 314 strokes respec- tively. They took third place in the sectional and ended up with a tie for fifth place with Elkhart in the state meet. Sluggers Fail All we needed was Roger Maris. Our varsity baseball team was: FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Conch Doug Simpson, Bob Poor, John Byers, John Barth, Lorry Eberly, Dove Gapski, Coach Dick Thompson. SECOND ROW, Left to Right: Mgr. John Hipskind, Don Ellison, Darrell Stroup, Bob Lerman, Jim Niemann, Jim Perkins, Dove Hendrix, Frank Nevelle. THIRD ROW, Left to Right: Mgr. Mike Darch, Joe Kramer, Maurice Krause, Bob Rickel, Hoi Widener, Bob Suit, Mgr. Greg Sugonis. To Duplicate Previous Season The baseballers of spring 1961 did not capture their second straight conference title, as many fol- lowers of Riley baseball had hoped they would, but they did snare their share of glory as they grabbed third place in the ENIHSC and finished with an overall 1 2-8 record. Powered by the pitching of seniors Bob Rickel and Hal Widener and the timely hitting of Dave Gapski, Bob Poor, John Barth, and Jim Perkins, the Wild- cats bowled over their first five opponents. Then the season was up and down. Niles was the first to eke out a victory; then Central, St. Joe, and Washing- ton, in successive games, came out on the short end as the Wildcats triumphed. This was followed by two loss streaks of three games each. Sandwiched in between was a win over LaPorte, 5-0. Springing back to life, the team plastered Goshen, 9-1, and squeaked past Elkhart, 6-5. In the season finale, the Wildcats couldn ' t push across a run, as Central escaped with a win, 2-0. That sure was a fast one, wasn ' t it. Bob poor? Racquelmen get ready for opponents. Left to right: Jim Glick, Jotin Wolfe, Jim Welling, Sam Kramer, Craig Hostermon, Rick Shearer, Chuck Freeland, Mark Hostermon, and Albie Hirschler. Tennis Team Blames It All On Kennedy Administration This year was undoubtedly a new low for the tennis team at Riley. The racquetmen just could not seem to hit the winning trail as they compiled a record of no wins and eight losses. In each match the team came out on the short end of a 5-0 score except against Misha- waka when they just barely lost by 3-2. Playing varsity for Coach Wilbur Armstrong were Albie Hirschler, Chuck Freeland, Jim Glick, Craig Hostermon, Mark Hostermon, Sam Kramer, Rick Shearer, Jim Welling, and John Wolfe. 90 TRACK Mishawaka Riley SOVi Lakeville Culver M. their time and advice, and to the Riley faculty and student body for their support. it ' s over now. We see our year behind us. It looks different than it did a year ago. Then it was tall, hard, cold, and wrapped in austerity. Now it seems to smile. It is warm and haloed with fond memories. We see in its shadows those who lived through ' 62 with us. We step on and leave our signpost behind — behind as we stride ofF into the dim future. This warm glowing memory and the challenge of the path ahead give us new courage to push on . . . forever. Our special thanks go to Mr. Koch whose time and effort guided this book, and to all others who have contributed in countless ways.
