What subiects do I need to take to get into Nurses' Training? These and a thousand more are the kinds of questions answered every day by the Guidance Counselors. As the title implies, their function is both to counsel and guide students through high school and help them plan their careers beyond high school. Additional duties involve giv- ing all kinds of tests, consulting with both parents and teachers about students, and assisting students to adjust to the manifold problems and situations, of high school. In order to avoid serious mistakes and loss of op- portunity, students need the careful and intelligent guidance of counselors who are specially trained to give this help. This specialized help is given in two ways, through discussion under the direction of the counselor, and through individual conferences. 33 34 The staff of the English Department. Standing. Years ago it was readin', writin' and 'rithmetic. Today it is still readin' and more readin'. Although you may think the aim of those in this department is to make you struggle through the mysteries of the participle and verb, their chief ambition is to teach you how to read, what to read, and how to write. We have come to know that since we rub shoulders with people at work and in the community, a solid background in English is a prerequisite to happiness and well-being. Without some knowledge of what the best minds of all time have to put into print, and without a reasonably good command of English as a means of communication we are not educated for happiness or for success in the exciting business of making a living. This Department tries to develop a recognition and appreciation of the art heritage of students, and to help them gain a knowledge of art terms and es- tablished art principles. Many students are helped to develop acceptable standards of taste in art in order that they may be intelligent consumers in the selection and arrange- ment of obiects used in everyday living. It is common for these teachers to discover the stud- ent who has special abilities and aptitude in art, and to give him that added encouragement and ex- perience which will aid him in developing his talent to the fullest. Lastly, this Department provides a means for self- realization and individual expression, both for re- creational purposes and as a basis for the continua- OW 'WO Ur' fe0Cl1eI'Sf MVS- WCICY1 Gnd M555 DOY, take tion of growth in art as preparation for a vocation. pride observing the work done in their classes. The world has be- come travel conscious and rapid transportation has brought all countries within close reach of each other. You not only enioy a trip more if you know the language of a country you visit, but it aids you in becoming an ambassador of good will. Another reason for learning a second language is the military involvement of the United States in countries all around the globe. When boys are assigned to military service, knowledge of another language will aid in their placement, or help in their adjustment to conditions they meet. The great in- crease in world trade calls for persons who have developed a reasonable proficiency in another lang- uage. The study of a language includes the study of the geography of a country, its history, and the customs of the people. Learning a new language involves study and hard work, but the rewards are great in personal enioy- ment and profit. Language teachers Miss Noble and Mrs. Brokaw are looking at the route Miss Kiel took this summer on her trip to France. Pop l '- in l - ::, H This is an affair of the heart, Joe Northern explains to Jim Clark, Jack Robeson, Carol Thompson and Marie Odush. The program of studies in science has been developed over the years to serve both the terminal as well as the advanced student. The basic philosophy in the science curriculum at Riley, is to reveal to the student the wonders of the universe, both ani- mate and inanimate. lt teaches a student to develop the habit of critical examination of data and an understanding of the limitations of such data. The Riley Science student must spell correctly, express him- self clearly in both speech and writing, be orderly in work and thinking, and realize that the laboratory is the place to sharpen his eye, to withhold judgment, and to examine data critically. f This big Cincinnati is no easy machine to master, but Bob Skelton seems to be making the milling machine do what he wants it to do. In The Making Be on your toes, girls! lf a few years from now a boy who graduated from this de- partment pops the question he should have all the furniture made, blue-print of the new home in his pocket and the invi- tations printed and ready to mail. Later, a lathe and work-shop in the basement will repair any home appliance that needs it. That's how thoroughly this department cov- ers the ground. Seriously, here is a de- partment that accomplishes great things. Many a boy has found his vocation in life from the hours spent in vocational arts. Countless others have discovered a hobby that will make happy the lcisurc hours to come in the future. f Q, s., A MN Lance Greider and Gene Pulliam are putting the finishing touches on their proiects in Woodworking shop. .lim Welly and Bill Wells are setting the type for tickets to the Sophomore Dance. ,..n1 S ik if .f ,.f ws., 41 The courses in the Business Education Department are designed to give information which will help every individual handle his personal business affairs, and to give training in some basic skills which will help an individual earn his living in business or sup- plement his income while he is making preparation for some other vocation or profession. Business and economic conditions change so ra- pidly and so radically that no one can predict with certainty what the opportunities or needs for em- ployment will be in the future. Those taking these courses find it necessary to get as broad a founda- tion as possible and then to learn one or two funda- mental skills which can be marketed. Those planning to work in the business world know, that there are a number of personal qualifica- tions necessary for success. Among these are ac- curacy, dependability, a good attendance record, the ability to get along with others, personal appear- ance, courtesy, and loyalty. This department continually stresses these im- portant personal assets. Mr. Murtin's Typing l class tries for 45 words a minute during a five-minute drill This Departmenfs ..-v 'N i. 'es Our nurse Mrs. Cashman, right, and her assistant, Miss Koscielski keep a sharp eye on the health of Riley students. A Q More than twenty students find it necessary to visit the nurses' office each day. Some of these cases are serious while others are mild, but everyone de- pends on Mrs. Cashman, and Miss Koscielski for any help they should need. Our nurses also give hearing and TB tests. They weigh and measure all students at certain grade levels, and they keep a complete health record of every student in school. This record starts when the student enters kindergarten and continues all the way through high school. All gym excuses, dental and doctor appointments must be cleared through the nurse's office. Her ex- cuses are valued ones, for with them there is no time to be made up. This only proves how brave Ann Millar and Judy Laughlin were, receiving their tests from the ladies of the TB league. L ..f ' A s M'w,,....-4 5 'fri X , 'Q' L D Teens Kee Trim In addition to Riley's complete course in Health as taught by Mr. Parker, considerable emphasis is plac- ed on physical fitness through our gym classes. ln the iunior high school everyone goes to gym class- es at least five hours a week. These are decreased as the students grow older, and have acquired the knowledge that properexercise is a daily requisite for physical fitness. Riley's gym program helps students conserve and im- prove their health, fosters wholesome activities on a year-round program, and develops skills and abil- ities to the point that the student enjoys taking part in games and recreation. It seems like the boys in gym class look forward each semester to the week they can play with the cage ball. Christine Burglund is leading the discussion. Literally speaking, here is a department that is as old as the ages. It may be History to you, all start- ing with the ancients at 5,000 B. C., but to these teachers it's a job of explaining and interpreting a story of human events that is vital and alive even though it is recorded in a dead and distant past. Music, in its variety of forms, is one of the vital forces in the life of an adult and a community. lt appeals to all classes and is indispensable in the home, the church, and the school. Music of the right sort offers a wholesome outlet for the emotions of joy, grief, patriotism, and religion. Musical training has an inestimable value as a medium to aid in developing the worthy use of leisure time. The courses offered by the Music Department aim to develop good taste, to instill a genuine love and fine sensitiveness in the world of music, and to develop musical talents to the best of the student's ability. Those having unusual talent are en- couraged to choose a career in the field of music. Rehearsals like this, directed by Miss Guilliams, are es- sential to the fine performances given by our glee club. gm-1 fe' Professor Newell Long was guest con- ductor of one of the band rehearsals. Someone once said that Einstein made up math problems he could not later work himself. lt's too bad he did not know the members of this depart- ment. They could have even shown him some short- cuts. This department provides the mathematics necessary for graduation, as well as that required for entrance to any college. Among these are four semesters of algebra, three of geometry, and one of trigonometry. In the last five years, however, some changes have been made to meet the new demands for mathematical manpower in our society, and some others will be made in the coming years. It has books, of course, about 10,000 of them, and acquires more each year. It also has other library materials- maps, charts, globes, pictures, newspapers and pamphlets, but more important, it puts these mater- ials to work. That is the final test of a library- the use that is made of its materials by students, teachers, and parents. In addition to the standard reference works, fiction and non-fiction books, many periodicals are pur- chased in general and specialized fields. By means of these students keep abreast of current history and the rapid changes that science, invention and en- gineering are bringing about, changes which affect our daily lives and the economy in which students will have to find their places. The library program at Riley is designed not only to supplement and enrich subject matter, but to intro- duce students to our great literary heritage, and to teach them the techniques for locating materials on subiects that interest them. lllll Qiiii? A football team cannot always be iudged by its won and lost record. This Riley team had spirit, courage, and enthusiastic student backing. These are what make a successful team in any sport, not the won and lost column. Improvement over the previous season also marks a successful team. Riley did not improve in the won and lost column, but it did improve in the spirit and fight of the team. Student enthusiasm and support of the team hit a high peak this year. These im- provements mark a successful team, not its record. Riley excelled in two games last season. They scored their first touchdown on October 2, 1959 in the St. Joe game. The Wildcats dominated p l a y throughout the second half, but an untimely fumble proved costly to the Riley cause in losing the game, 20-7. On October 'l7, 1959 Riley scared the con- ference title hopes of the Adams Eagles. Riley, on a spectacular passing play from quarterback Bob Foor to halfback John MacDonald, scored early in the third quarter. But the conversion was wide and the Eagles eeked out a hard earned victory over the 'Cats, 7-6. All and all it was a successful season for the 1959 version of Riley Football. . . . The Riley basketball team finished this season with the same record as it had last year, winning nine and losing eleven both years. Although the re- cords of the teams are the same, this year's squad had more fight, speed, and much better backing by the student body. There were several games that were quite close. We lost to Central by four points, 72-68, and to Adams by two, 62-60. If luck had been in our direc- tion, those games could have gone our way, and we would have had our first winning season in sev- eral years. The bright spot in the season this year was the winning of the Holiday Tourney at Adams. The Wild- cats went into the tourney as the favorite, and the team finished as predicted. In the first round, the Cats defeated St. Joe, and in the championship game, they won over Penn. It was the second year in a row that Riley took the crown. The future looks bright. The B-Team had a fine record, and the Freshman and 7th-8th grade squads are loaded with promising boys. Riley should again be a potent team in the conference. This year we finished last, but the Wildcats turn is coming. 61 B-Team Ha ne Seaso I1 ,, Seated, left to right: G. Grundy, L. Puskas, B. Leyman, V. Hamilton, L. West, J. Byers, R. Mauer, J. The B-team record of 'Il-8 shows that next seasons' varsity squad will be loaded with potential. Due to the fine coaching of Mr. Barnbrook, the team posted fine showings throughout the season. Particularly pleasing to the coach were victories over Central Q49-405, Adams C30-28D, as well as 2 out of 3 over Washington, and one from St. Joe. ing: Mgr. D. Burks, J. Jewell, S. BASEBALL Doug Simpson took over the reins of the Riley baseball team in 1959 and led the Cats through a colorful season. Although the team failed to equal the previous season's mark, the splinter swingers gave their new coach an enviable record. The squad be- gan the season in poor fashion, dropping their first six contests. But when Riley traveled to Culver Military Acad- emy and swept a thrilling double-header 8-6 and 'IO- 6, they proved to themselves their potential. Led by the timely hitting of Jerry Lerman, Eugene Davis, and Danny Graeber the steady pitching of George Vanderheyden, Hal Widener, and Dave Gleason, the team finished second in the city tournament and clos- ed the season with a four and four conference re- cord. With some fine players coming up from the B squad, Coach Simpson hopes to put a strong team on the diamond in 1960. TENNIS Although the 'Cat Tennis team split the season in '59, they failed to live up to expectations. Rated to be the powerhouse in the conference, the netters could not seem to plant their feet firmly on the win- ning path. Under coach Bosco Sarenac the squad started the season in fine fashion with successive wins over La- Porte, Adams, and Central. They temporarily slack- ened their pace and dropped dual meets to Goshen and Elkhart. In bouncing back to whip Mishawaka, the team looked as though they might had finally lived up to expectations, erratic play led to defeat at the hands of of Michigan City and Fort Wayne. The graduation of Tim Chapman and Bob Vuko- vich, two mainstays of the team, will be keenly felt. But due to youth on the B squad, Riley will once again get the nod as a conference contender. In spite of an opening loss to Mishawaka, the cross country team finished with a fine ten and seven record. Led by Captain Joe Nace, the runners proved themselves a team to be reckoned with. There were several outstanding performances for Riley throughout the season. In the Elkhart relays the sprinters placed fourth. The City meet brought much prestige to Riley as the squad was successful in downing their competing city foes for a first place finish. After finishing fourth in the Sectional meet, the 'Cats went on to a respectable eighteenth place in the State. Coach Paul Frazier expects to put a strong squad of runners on the field next Fall, as the B Team is filled with boys who possess courage and ability. The future looks bright since only three boys, Art and Arden Floran along with Leon Copeland, will be lost through graduation. Coach Paul Frazier's track team had a disappoint- ing season. The trackmen won only two dual meets, winning over Plymouth and Adams. Victory is ol- ways sweet when we beat Adams, and the team did a good iob in beating the Eagles by more than eighteen points. The team finished sixth in the ENIHSC meet and third in the city meet. As you can see, the record of the track team is not one of envy. But the most important thing is improvement. Riley's trackmen's spirit improved throughout the season. Along with this spirit came experience. Last season was one of learning and experience. The trackmen gained knowledge in both departments. Next season will be one of a different nature, the team has learned, and it will pay dividends. Riley's swimming team at times during the season showed the polish and class of champions. At other times, however, the tankers couldn't seem to work as a team, which the season's record of 7-7 showed. Led by John and Dave Buchanan, the Wildcats downed such worthy opponents as Whiting 54-32, Gary Froebel 63-27, Horace Mann 57-36, and Lew Wallace 64-29. Also riding the waves behind the swimmers were Laporte, Penn, and Washington. John and Dave Buchanan were voted into the 1959 High School All American team. John finish- ed second in the state swim meet in the 100 yard butterfly and captured a first in the conference meet. Dave took a first in the 100 yard backstroke and second in the 200 yard individual medley at the state meet. Dave also captured the conference title in these events. The future indicates that the coach will probably receive a few victory dunkings, as Tom Jewell and John Buchanan will be the only boys lost through graduation. Led by two fine seniors, Arthur and Arden Floran, the mat cats posted an overall 6-4 record. The Cats opened the season against Mishawaka and blitzed the Maroons 60-0. This score is the high- est that can be accumulated in a dual meet. Riley won its next two meets before being halted by an Elkhart team. Central and Niles also halted the Cat's rampage. Next to feel the potency of Riley were Penn and Washington-Clay. The cats closed the sea- son by losing to Adams in a very close struggle. The graduation of the Florans along with three other seniors should make next season a challenge for coach .loe Woitys and his returning veterans. The Cat's thought they should have done better because they had the potential to win the state title. They didn't miss the title by much though as they finished fifth in the championship meet in Indianapolis. The team had a slow start losing three out of the first five matches. However, they gained from ex- perience and ended the season with an eight and four record. Elkhart and LaPorte were the only teams that beat Riley, as they won over Riley in both matches.
