All of us regretted to hear of Mr. Schubert's re- tirement, when his resignation was announced on February 13. Mr. Schubert was on the facultv when Riley became a high school in 1930. He not only helped organize the Science Department, but was the Department's head for many years. The teaching of chemistry and physics was his first love, and he demanded the best efforts from all students who came under his masterful direction. His success is attested to by the many fine scientists, both in and out of college, who were privileged to attend his classes. We wish him many pleasant years to come, and know he will enioy happy memories of his many years at Riley. Football While Coach Whitmer's 1958 squad failed to win a game, they will be remembered as a team that had courage and determination. They lost their opener to Fort Wayne Catholic in the final two minutes, 13-7. Gleason's pass to Munger gave them a 7-6 lead early in the game. Goshen's Redskins tumbled the Cats 31-13 in their Conference opener. Gleason's passes to Hostetler and Munger accounted for Riley's scores. Riley took the opening kickoff of the Fort Wayne North game 73 yards to score, but had to settle for a 6-6 tie. Michigan City then con- quered Whitmer's men 21-6, and Central's State Champs overwhelmed them 40-O. The Adam's loss, 40-13, was highlighted by Gleason's touchdown pass to Sanders on the first play of the game. Sander's 96 yard touchdown run sparked the team to an early 7-0 lead in the l.aPorte game, but it wasn't enough as the Slicers fought back to a 13-13 tie. The season closed with a 48-O loss to Elkhart's Blazers. Line coach Woitys isn't sure but coaches Hafner and Hor- vath seem pleased with the action on the field. My ff, N-M, J i W f Everyone on the bench was up when Riley received the kickoff for the opening game of the season against Fort Wayne Central Catholic. The conference game record was two wins and six losses. Coach Rzeszewski stated at the beginning of the season, that although we didn't have the height and experience needed for a top-ranked team, if the players had the spirit and the desire to win, we would win half of our games. The players had the spirit and the desire, we won almost 50W of the games. The team had. a record of only 2 wins out of 6, when they met Terre Haute Garfield. This game was one of the seasons highlights. Riley led by one point at the end of the first quarter, pulling to 34-21 halftime lead. With the help of Phil Grundy and Herman West, the high scorers in the game, the final score was Riley 65, Garfield 44. Next the Cats faced South Bend Washington. The Panthers outscored the Wildcats from the field 23-19, but Riley dropped in 26 scores from the char- ity line. These freethrows put Riley in command. They upset Washington 64-56. The Varsity Cagers showed their fighting spirit in the Holiday Tourney. The Riley-Washington game was nip and tuck until the last period when Riley pulled to a final score of 69-62. The Wildcats next played Adams, the fifteenth ranked team in the state. It was a close hard-fought game with Riley winning 58-52 to become the Holiday Champs. After dropping Conference games to North Side, Central, Adams and Elkhart, they set records when they conquered the LaPorte Slicers inf a sensational game, 93-84. The total combined score of both teams was 177, the highest ever scored in a high school game at Adams. The game also broke the previous best single game high of our school. After losing to Goshen and Michigan City, the squad met Washington-Clay in the Sectional Tournament. They got by Clay 61-48, but lost to Adams 75-61 in an exciting game. 41 x23 5 al' .4 i Ei to 5 1 lm.. The coaching staff discusses the Sectional Tournament drawing. Riley varsity netman closed their T958 season with a 2-7 record. B team record was 'l-2. Although the prospects looked good at the start of the season two players of the '57 varsity squad returning, Tim Chapman with and Larry Wilson, Riley went down to defeat in all of its games except La Porte and Mishawaka. They lost thrilling, close matches to Central and Elkhart 3-2. During the warmup before the Elkhart match Wilson sprained his ankle and the contest had to be delayed while his iniured ankle was taped. This misfortune cost us a close match. Only two of the varsity players, Boyer and Wilson, are seniors. The other four top players, Vukovich, Perkins, Kramer, and Chapman, will return next year along with the rest of the strong, veteran netters. xl Captain, Larry Wilson ' L Consistant winner 46 151 ROW: Rich slonef Dave Kl0Pfef 5f9inf Jim DfUSk0VlfS- 2nd Row: Jim Cook, Mr. Shafer, Coach, Bob Beck and Dave Wilmes. Golf Winning 10 and tying 1 of their 15 matches, the Varsity Golfers of 1958 became one of the finest high school golf teams in the state. They started slowly because of bad weather, losing or tying 3 of their first four matches. But be- ginning with the Central match, which they won 12Vz to QW, they won 8 of their next 9. Playing steller golf, the team won the coveted championship of the LaPorte lnvitational early in May, indicating the strength the team possessed. They turned in one of their finest performances of the season when they won the Sectional Champ- ionship, posting a gross score of 212, the lowest score ever made in this meet. One week later, they placed second in the Conference meet. Late in May they were entered in the State Tournament at Indianapolis, and came home with 3rd place honors. Barnes, Gleason, and Daugherty made up a fine pitching staff. Track Track was going through a re- building program last Spring, but the squad became involved in some thrilling dual meets before the season was over. Early in the season they scored heavily against both St. Joseph and Washington- Clay, winning both meets easily. However, they were out-manned in Conference competition, though they dropped a meet to Adams by a scant four points. Below: Milers Chuck Dawson, Leon Copeland, and Ronnie Roskuski approach the finish line. The team placed 8th in the Culver Relays, 10th in the race for City Title. Promising Sophomores and Juniors indicate a fairly strong team in the Spring of '59. Below: Wier goes up and over. 50 lst row, left to rignt: D. Duerlnger, R. Sisti, T. Jewell, B. Knight, T. After dropping their lst meet to Evanston, Illinois, they won 8 straight meets, before loosing to Central, 38 to 57. ln a meet with other Conference schools, Dave Buchanon won the 100 yard Backstroke, John Buchanon the 100 yard Butterfly, and the T20 yard Individual Medley, and Gary Kins the 100 yard Breaststroke. At the State Meet held at Purdue, Dave Hail, Gary Kins, John Buchanon and Tom Carmichael won the 200 yard Medley Relay, tying the State record of 'I:52.3, Gary Kins won the TOO yard Breaststroke in 'I:'l0.5. The two conference winners, Arden and Arthur Floran. 52 Wrestling Coach Woitys brought the 1959 Wrestling squad to a real conference contender dur- ing his second year with the team. Being a comparatively new sport at Riley, many of the boys were inexperienced. But they won 7 of their 10 matches to record the best record Riley has made in the sport. In a tournament with other Conference schools, they finished in 3rd place, scoring 60 points. In this meet Art and Arden Floran both won 1st places, Art in the 103 pound division, Arden at 112 lbs. The squad placed 4th in the Sectional Tour- nament with 46 points, but no boys were qualified for the State Meet. Prospects are bright for next year as only four on the squad are Seniors, Pat Geraghty, Bruce Sullivan, Dave Gleason, and .lohn Harvey. Riley Opponent FOOTBALL . The play centered around a merchant's daugh- ter whose father frowned on her love affair. She made false arrange- ments tor her poor but handsome suitor to live at her home, only to nearly lose him because her father was unaware of her scheme. Her servants are also involved in the story, but it ends happily tor every- one, as all good comedies are supposed to end.
