BASKETBALL TEAM lst row-H. West, D. Hanish, C. Grundy, P. Grundy, T. Poholski, D. Barnes. 2nd Row-G. VanderHeyden, G. Nevelle, R. Evard, J. Campbell, L. Wilson, D. Gunn. Along with a new head football coach, Riley welcomed its new basketball coach, Bob Biddle, who came to us from Middlebury, where he had turned out highly successful teams. Riley, with five return- ing lettermen, started the season by whipping Froe- bel only to drop the next three to Glenn, Auburn, and Lakeville. By playing heads-up ball, the Wild- cats gained prestige as a scrappy team by beating a strong Mishawaka team. The team then seemed to run into a iinx when they encountered any school named for the first president of our country. ln succession they dropped tilts to South Bend Wash- ington, East Chicago Washington, and Washington Clay, before a winning game against North Side of Fort Wayne. From here on they found them- selves and began to play the type of ball they were capable of. They beat LaPorte and almost upset defending champions, Central, in an overtime game. After beating Niles, the Wildcats dropped the next three to Adams, Garfield, and Elkhart, which were Varsity all nip and tuck games. Lebanon and Goshen prov- ed to be victims of the Wildcats, when then wound up the season by losing to a strong Michigan City team. Sectional time arrived again and the Wildcats defeated Lakeville easily in their first game, but ended their basketball year by losing to the tourney favored St. Joe team. The outstanding player of the squad this year was Dan Barnes, who was the second top scorer in the conference. However, as in any sport, no one man is a team and the Riley squad was backed up by several very capable seniors in Chuck Grundy, Tom Poholski, John Campbell, Ron Evard, and Dave Gunn. With a lack of height and experience, the Wildcats proved to several of the top teams this year that desire and a never-dying spirit are substitutes for these two things.
